The first chapter contains the 1870 census and annuity payment records of the Grand River Mackinac Sault Ste. Marie and Traverse Bands of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians of Michigan. These records name the head of the household and give a count of the other members and information on their annuity. The second chapter is of greater genealogical interest because it is a listing of those persons in the 1870 enumeration and all their known descendants as found living on a special enumeration made on 4 March 1907. This listing gives the name and age of each person in the household with various supplemental information. The third chapter contains a listing of children born after 4 March 1907 and before 1 August 1909. These records give name date of birth parents and some other data. Il 15 marzo 1944, la ventiquattrenne Renata Laqueur venne deportata assieme al marito nel campo di concentramento di Bergen-Belsen, nella Bassa Sassonia, dopo aver già trascorso un anno in vari altri lager. I due rimasero a Bergen-Belsen fino all'aprile del 1945, quando furono liberati dall'Armata Rossa. Durante i lunghi, terribili mesi trascorsi nel campo, Renata tenne un diario della prigionia, un diario che non prova solo quanto la giovane fosse dotata nella scrittura, ma che testimonia anche e soprattutto la volontà di affrontare e sconfiggere l'orrore del lager attraverso la potenza delle parole e della narrazione. In un luogo tanto segnato dal male, queste pagine mostrano la faticosa lotta per coltivare la speranza nelle avversità più estreme. Una testimonianza straordinaria, che l'autrice ha tentato a lungo di pubblicare senza successo e che ora torna a nuova vita, puntando ancora i riflettori sulla più grande tragedia storica e umana del nostro tempo.
