‎Estate Inventories: How to Use Them‎

‎Morgantown: Masthof Press. New. 2000. Trade Paperback. 137 pages. You can learn a lot about a person from his or her possessions -- even the junk. Ask any archeologist or forensic scientist. A midden trash heap may hold the answer to an archeologist's prayers and a garbage bag may yield gold to the trained criminologist. You may well have some of your ancestor's possessions but it is unlikely that you have many or even that you have something from each of them. While recovery of the physical objects may be an impossibility you may be able to get the next best thing -- a listing of these possessions. Estate inventories were listings of a deceased person's possessions made at the order of the court charged with settling the estate. Many of these inventories are extant and available to the researcher. Some are long and involved; some are as short as a few lines. They were made of the estates of the wealthy the not-so-wealthy and even the relatively poor. Since estate inventories rarely yield direct genealogical evidence they are often overlooked even by researchers who already know of their existence This is unfortunate because they often provide the researcher with something that genealogical charts and tables cannot -- a glimpse into your ancestor's personal life. . ‎American Passenger Arrival Records‎

‎Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company. New. 1996. Updated and Revised. Paperback. 142 pages. Millions of people made their way to America in the most determined and sustained migration the world has ever known. Initially they left traces of their immigration in scattered records and documents. Later their arrival here was documented so minutely that the records resulting are among the largest the most continuous and the most uniform in the nation's archives. These passenger arrival records identify by name place of origin and other particulars the vast majority of persons who participated in the great Atlantic migration. This work examines the records in their historical and legal framework and it explains what they contain where they can be found and how they can be used. In effect it is a road map through the mass of records and archival resources documenting immigrant arrivals from the time of the earliest settlements to the passage of the Quota Acts three centuries later. This new edition features expanded coverage of colonial emigration records finding aids and reference materials National Archives microfilm programs and publications current projects and new developments in immigration research and more. . ‎Norwegians in Wisconsin‎

‎Madison: Wisconsin Historical Society Press. New. 2001. Trade Paperback. Index. . 72 pages. Ethnic Ser. . This perennially popular book now revised and expanded with additional historical photos and documents offers a concise introduction to Wisconsin's Norwegian immigrants. The narrative examines the mass migration of Norwegians from 1837 when Ole Nattestad became the first Norwegian settler in Wisconsin to the late nineteenth century when Norwegian immigration largely came to a close. The volume demonstrates the efforts of immigrants to balance newfound American customs with the most treasured traditions of their homeland. New to this edition are the selected letters of Ole Munch Raeder a scholar sent by the Norwegian government in 1847 to study the American legal system. ‎Somerset Homecoming: Recovering a Lost Heritage‎

‎Chapel Hill NC: University of North Carolina Press. New. 2000. First Edition. Paperback. 166 pages. Chapel Hill Book Ser. . In 1860 Somerset Place was one of the most successful plantations in North Carolina--and its owner one of the largest slaveholders in the state. More than 300 slaves worked the plantation's fields at the height of its prosperity; but nearly 125 years later the only remembrance of their lives at Somerset now a state historic site was a lonely wooden sign marked "Site of Slave Quarters." Somerset Homecoming first published in 1989 is the story of one woman's unflagging efforts to recover the history of her ancestors slaves who had lived and worked at Somerset Place. Traveling down winding southern roads through county courthouses and state archives and onto the front porches of people willing to share tales handed down through generations Dorothy Spruill Redford spent ten years tracing the lives of Somerset's slaves and their descendants. Her endeavors culminated in the joyous nationally publicized homecoming she organized that brought together more than 2000 descendants of the plantation's slaves and owners and marked the beginning of a campaign to turn Somerset Place into a remarkable resource for learning about the history of both African Americans and whites in the region. ‎Where to Look for Hard-to-Find German-Speaking Ancestors in Eastern Europe Index to 19720 Surnames in 13 Books with Historical Background on Each Settlement 2nd Edition‎

‎Clearfield. New. 2001. Paperback. 148 pages. This book is a godsend for researchers whose German-speaking ancestors emigrated to Eastern Europe or whose trail cannot be traced to Western Europe. The fact is that thousands of German settlements comprising millions of individuals sprang up in Russia Poland and the countries of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century e.g. nearly 2 million show up in the Russian census of 1897 alone.
In this work Bruce Brandt and his father Edward furnish us with the surname of every German-speaking individual who appears in thirteen authoritative histories--eleven of them written in German--which document this massive emigration. In all this work lists 19720 surnames of German-speaking ancestors who emigrated to Russia Poland Romania and elsewhere in Eastern Europe containing altogether 24000 references. Each surname is keyed to one of the thirteen sources examined by the Brandts. In the introductory chapters to the book the authors go over the problems associated with variations in German spelling and provide an extremely informative history of German settlement in Eastern Europe and detailed summaries of each of their sources. Finally since many of their thirteen sources are hard to come by the authors have included an order form which researchers can use to request searches of the surnames found in their index. . ‎Pioneer History of Orleans County New York‎

‎Bowie: Heritage Books. New. 1998. Reprint. Paperback. Index. . 476 pages. The early history of Orleans County on the south shore of Lake Ontaio about 40 miles east of Niagara Falls in western New York State reveals the Iroquois Indians of what is now western New York at war with the Algonquins and Hurons of what is now Canada. Into this scene came the French explorers following the St. Lawrence River and the Great Lakes westward many years before the English settled western New York. The French formed an alliance with the Algonquins and Hurons against the Iroquois. The Iroquois fared so well in this contest that they prevented any French settlement in New York apart from a trading post at the mouth the Niagara River and a few missionaries. The French continued to claim New York as French territory and settlements near Lake Ontario would pass back and forth between French and English possession depending who had the upper hand until the territory was surrendered to the United States in 1796. The book explains early land divisions such as the Holland Purchase and how they related to what was to be Orleans County then describes early pioneer conditions hardships and ways of life. The Erie Canal was completed in 1825 and 'to no part of the State of New York as the Erie Canal proved of more benefit than to Orleans County. ' Prosperity came in on every hand and with it development and people. This is the phase which occupies most of the book with Chapters 15 through 29 each dealing with a town or village. The fullname index lists about 2000 names. Preceding the index area about a dozen appendices listing various types of county and town officials along with lists of towns villages and elevations of various localities above sea level. . ‎Scottish Family History‎

‎Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Company. New. 1994. Trade Paperback. This work advocates a broader more searching approach to family history than mere genealogy. Based on the author's experience as a local history librarian in the East Lothian district of Scotland he examines the Scottish family in relation to the great movements of local history while providing instruction on the sources and techniques needed for successful family history research. Trades professions religions clans and surnames migration and emigration labor and industry kin and community--all are dealt with in the intimate context of family history. So too are the conventional sources of genealogical data such as church records memoirs and government records. A manual for the researcher into family history this is also a history of the family as it has developed in Scotland from the time of the clans to the present day. This work is both scholarly and readable. See also the companion book Scottish Local History. . Genealogical Publishing Company paperback‎
