This is the first volume of a six-part series devoted to the coroplastic art of Cyprus from the Chalcolithic through the Cypro-Archaic period. The series is the most comprehensive treatment of the subject ever undertaken. Many of the figurines are in the collections of the Cyprus Museum Nicosia or in the various District Museums and are published here for the first time. Numerous other figurines are scattered throughout the major museum collections of the world. The volumes proceed in chronological order with Vol. II devoted to fgurines of the Late Cypriote II - Cypro-Geometric III and the last four volumes to the Cypro-Archaic period. In each volume the most representative terracottas are listed in catalogue form accompanied by general discussion of their most signifcant aspects. The series is not designed as a complete corpus but all types and major groups are represented. Each volume ends with lists of illustration and photographic acknowledgments locations of fgurines and a general index. Almost all catalogued items are illustrated in the plates; uncatalogued comparanda sometimes from sites outside Cyprus are illustrated with photographs or line drawings in text figures. SSE of the village of Kouklia. Two extensive tomb complexes T. 104 and 105 and a well were excavated at Teratsoudhia and a single tomb at Eliomylia. The Teratsoudhia tombs were used in LC IA/B through LC IIC/IIIA with considerable looting and remodelling in the Archaic period. The well contained settlement material covering the whole span from LC I to LC IIIA and these excavations have shown that the Late Bronze Age settlement extended as far south as Teratsoudhia. The earliest burial in the Eliomylia tomb is dated end of LC II or transitional to LC III. For each excavation description of the tomb or complex is followed by a catalogue of artifacts found discussion and conclusions. The material from these tombs provides evidence for periods such as LC I for which the Palaepaphos settlement has so far yielded little or nothing and they further document the flourishing nature of the LC IIC/IIIA phase in this area. Large numbers of fragments of mould-made standing draped female figurines dating to the Classical period were found at Salamis not in association with a particular building but in debris associated with the ramparts suggesting the location of a sanctuary nearby. 909 items are catalogued in this volume. Some figures have a decorated headdress calathos others are carrying various types of animals birds flowers or other objects or holding their breasts. Analysis of the figurines indicates that certain series were made in workshops at Salamis whereas others were probably made elsewhere in eastern Cyprus. The figurines are an important source of information on female dress and jewellery of the time and they illuminate fashions and tastes at Salamis in the 5th- 4th centuries B.C. Four volumes of this series are devoted to terracotta figures of the Cypro-Archaic I-II period the most prolific phase for coroplastic production. This volume is concerned with the larger figures with a minimum height of ca. 50cm They are hollow figures and all are anthropomorphic representations. Anthropomorphic and zoomorphic masks are also included irrespective of size although most are fairly large since they have stylistic and manufacturing characteristics not unlike the rest of the larger figures covered in this volume. The largest number of larger figures was found in the well-known but provincial and somewhat isolated sanctuary at Ayia Irini in NW Cyprus. Lesser numbers of figures have been found in sanctuaries or bothroi at Idalion Kourion Salamis Toumba Limniti Tamassos Kazaphani-Mines Patriki and other sites many in uncontrolled excavations at the end of last century when the excavators only collected the heads and discarded the rest of the figures. The earlier part of the volume is devoted to analysis of the figures by chronological grouping with frequent reference to Gjerstad's earlier work on the subject; in the later part there is discussion of dress armour and jewellery as evidenced by the figures and manufacturing techniques. A wide variety of subject matter is covered in this final volume of the Cypriot coroplastic art series. The volume is divided into four chapters. The first covers centaurs sphinxes and various monsters Bes and related figures and Ptah-Patek. The second chapter devoted to mammals covers monkeys/bears lions horses donkeys/mules bulls goats rams stags pigs dogs and even a few mice a hedgehog and a couple of hares. The determination of species is not however always clear. The third chapter is equally varied treating snakes and worms two figures of a tortoise/turtle a chameleon a fish provided with legs! and a quantity of birds. The fourth chapter is devoted to inanimate objects and covers n�iskoi shrine models carts ships thymiateria furniture weapons and miscellanea bells a kernos and two miniature offering stands. The appendix is concerned with a comparative analysis of Cypriot clay ship models. Once again this volume is concerned with figurines of the Cypro-Archaic I-II period but in some cases examples have been included which may date to the early Cypro-Classical period to illustrate the continuity of a certain type. Considerable numbers of Cypriot antiquities are housed in the various provincial museums in France and in several lesser known museums in Paris. The purpose of this volume is to collect all of these together to make them more readily available for study. Major collections of Cypriot material such as those in the Musee du Louvre and several of the most important national museums are not included. Most of the volume is devoted to a detailed catalogue of objects listed under the heading of the towns 45 in all in which they are located. The artifacts are essentially ceramics limestone sculptures of varying size heads of statues and figurines of terracotta glass objects andjewels. Bronze objects are rare. The chronological range is from the Bronze Age EC III to the Roman period. The majority of the objects were acquired in the second half of the l9th century. Quantities in individual collections vary from one sherd of a White Slip bowl in Calais to 185 objects in the Musee d'Archeologie Chateau Borely in Marseille. Leventis Foundation Nicosia 1993. Fifteen papers in English and French with greek summaries are published in this volume in addition to several opening addresses. The symposium was designed to examine the cultural changes which Cyprus underwent in the 11 th century B.C. the transition from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age LC IIIB/CG IA and scholars who specialize in the Aegean and the Levant were invited as well as Cypriot specialists. The initial paper by Karageorghis sets the 12th century background and the following contributions cover the post-palatial period of Greece the Phoenicians and Cyprus and the 1 lth century B.C. in Israel. Other papers examine the evidence for settlement in Cyprus at this period and a detailed study is provided of the Kourion area Episkopi-Bambou/a and Kaloriziki. Karageorghis provides a general introduction to the development of Cypriot stone sculpture and this is followed by 19 papers in English French and German of varied content. The chronological range is from the Aceramic Neolithic to the Roman period. Anthropomorphic figurines of the Neolithic are surveyed by Le Brun and Bronze Age plank figures by Lubsen-Admiraal. Merrillees discusses the carvings in the dromos of Karmi-Palealona Tomb 6 and Astroem a relief-decorated stone basin fragment from Hala Sultan Tekke. For later period material individual reports cover the sculptures from Kition Kouklia Nea Paphos Marion Amathus and Miletus.
