‎LYDIAN ARCHITECTURE Ashlar Masonry Structures at Sardis‎

‎Oversized. ; Archaeological Exploration of Sardis Report 5; 320 pages; From the sixth to the fourth century B. C. , the western Anatolian region of Lydia was home to a distinctive local tradition of ashlar masonry construction. The earliest datable example of fine stone masonry in the environs of Sardis, the capital of the Lydian empire, is the tomb of King Alyattes, who died in ca. 560 B. C. Contemporary monuments include a city gate and monumental terraces. Alyattes' son Croesus was overthrown by the Persians in 547 B. C. , but the Lydian building tradition survived in chamber tombs at Sardis and throughout Lydia. This richly illustrated volume examines the monuments of Sardis and environs in the context of contemporary developments in Lydia and throughout the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. The study of Lydian architecture illuminates traditions of Anatolian kingship, technological exchange between Lydia and Greece and the Near East, and the origins of Persian imperial architecture.‎

‎LA VIGNA BARBERINI II: DOMUS, PALAIS IMPÉRIAL ET TEMPLES Stratigraphie Du Secteur Nord-Est Du Palatin‎

‎Bottom corners bumped. Else book is fine. Dustjacket has minor shelfwear and rubbing.

‎BURIAL AND ANCIENT SOCIETY The Rise of the Greek City-State‎

‎Minor shelfwear. Sticker remnant to back wrap. ; New Studies in Archaeology; 262 pages; This study of the changing relationships between burial rituals and social structure in Early Iron Age Greece will be required reading for all archaeologists working with burial evidence, in whatever period. This book differs from many topical studies of state formation in that unique and particular developments are given as much weight as those factors which are common to all early states. The ancient literary evidence and the relevant historical and anthropological comparisons are extensively drawn on in an attempt to explain the transition to the city-state, a development which was to have decisive effects for the subsequent development of European society.‎

‎POMPEII AD 79 The Treasure of Rediscovery‎

‎Very light shelfwear with former owner's name to ffep else book is fine. DJ has light edgewear with light chipping and a couple of small tears. ; An Official Publication of the American Museum of Natural History, New York; 305 pages; Oversized. This is the story of man's restoration of Pompeii to the world from the earliest excavations to the most recent soundings. Each step of the archaeological history brought about a clearer picture of life as it was. The discoveries also had their impact on the times -- "Pompeian fever" swept 18th and 19th century Europe. This is also the story of the men who dominated the digs -- the initial probings of Prince d'Elbeuf, the adventures -- amorous and otherwise -- of the Hamiltons, and of the dedicated Italians such as Fiorelli and Spinazzola who eventually brought systematic order to the digs. As a pictorial reinforcement to the text, the book presents a display of views and overviews, reconstructions and artistic interpretations, line drawings and etchings, engravings, vintage photography, and contemporary photographs.‎

‎THE FIRST WESTERN GREEKS‎

‎The purpose of this book is to acquaint a wider audience with an archaeological project that could hardly be more revolutionary: the effective discovery and excavation, from 1952 onwards, of the first Greek establishment in the West, Euboean Pithekoussai on the island of Ischia in the Bay of Naples. This vast trading settlement is not at all typical of the Western colonial scene. Pithekoussi is very large and very early, and it marks the northern limit of Greek South Italy; furthermore, the earliest immigrants may not all have been Greek. This book about Pithekoussai and its implications is based on Giorgio Buchner's excavations there, which have revealed a variety of component sites so far without parallel in the contemporary Greek homeland. The cemetery, the acropolis dump and suburban industrial quarter each shed light on a different aspect of everyday life at one of the great crossroads of antiquity. ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 200 pages‎

The second volume contains the results of detailed studies on the archaeological material, organic remains, and archeometric analyses that complete the image of this significant archaeological site. These studies help to further distinguish the main characteristics of the Mesolithic culture in the Aegean basin, including: the intense exploitation of sea resources, limited hunting activities, the collection of native fruits and land snails to supplement the diet, and attempts at domestication by isolated island communities.‎

‎THE EPIGRAPHIC LANDSCAPE OF ROMAN ITALY‎

‎Slight spine slant. Very minor shelfwear. ; Bulletin of the Institute of Classical Studies Supplement 73; 212 pages; With contributions from Edward Bispham, Guy Bradley, Alison E. Cooley, Fay Glinister, Valerie Hope, Mark Pobjoy and Benet Salway. The Epigraphic Landscape presents a series of case-studies in which a new generation of scholars examines the significance of interpreting inscriptions in terms of their topographical context and physical appearance. Some chapters focus on a genre of inscription – honorific building and funerary – whilst others discuss a single text such as the Rapino Bronze and the album of Canusium. This approach reveals the contribution of inscribed monuments to the transformation of towns and countryside and the impact of Rome on the landscape of the rest of Italy. The integration of epigraphic literary archaeological and topographical sources suggests new ways of looking at Roman colonization in Umbria. The transformation of the epigraphic landscape of its surrounding region challenges current views on the date of Lavinium’s decline. Similar inscriptions from Puteoli provide a starting-point for exploring the activities of the super-élite of Campania. By trying to reconstruct the motivations behind inscriptions several contributors reveal the subjectivity of these texts – such as the factors governing the appearance of gladiators’ tombstones – and warn against adopting too literal an interpretation of these sources even if inscribed in stone.‎

‎THE BOOK OF ALEXANDER SARCOPHAGUS‎

‎Scholar's name to ffep (E. Badian). Very light bump to bottom edge of rear board. Else fine. Light stains to front panel of DJ. Else very minor shelfwear to DJ. ; After an introduction of the Royal Necropolis of Sidon, examines the faces and finally the lid of the Alexander Sarcophagus in detail. At the end of the book its decorative style and ornamentation is described. The Alexander Sarcophagus has been a major attraction of the Istanbul Archaeological Museum ever since it was found in the late nineteenth century. Although named after Alexander the Great, the sarcophagus was not his, but was probably that of Abdalonymos, the last king of Sidon (Saida). Abdalonymos owed his throne to Alexander and the latter's close friend and general, Hephaistion. The subject matter of the reliefs decorating the sarcophagus suggests that Abdalonymos was here commemorating his benefactors; the sarcophagus thus takes its name, not from the ruler who commissioned it, but from its iconography; 64 pages‎

‎L'OR DES ROIS DE CHYPRE Numismatique Et Histoire à L'Époque Classique‎

‎2 corners are bumped. ; Oversized. XLIV-379 p. , 139 ill. , 35 pl. Photo. D’où provient l’or ?
