ATTIC SCRIPT A Survey
Former scholar's name on ffep (P. Stork). Top corner has light bumping. Dustjacket has a few small tears and chipping. ; Oxford Monographs on Classical Archaeology; 286 pages; This study places the inscriptions found on Athenian vases in the context of the early development of writing in Athens. Focusing on the period from the invention of the alphabet in the 8th century B.C. to the early 4th century B.C., when the local alphabet had been supplanted by the common Ionic script, the book presents inscriptions on stone, both public and private, scratched inscriptions on pottery, including the political ostraca, and some inscriptions on lead tablets. Although the vase inscriptions are brief, they number in the thousands and give an accurate picture of the art of writing and the state of literacy in the Classical Period.

THE DEFENSE OF ATTICA The Dema Wall and the Boiotian War of 378-375 B. C.
Very minor shelfwear to DJ else Fine. ; 259 pages; The enigmatic three-mile-long Dema wall in the countryside outside ancient Athens has perplexed archaeologists and historians for decades. When was it built and what role did it play in Greek military history? In a tour de force of archaeological and historical argument, Mark H. Munn establishes the place of the Dema wall in the defense of Athens and offers a completely new perspective on the Boiotian War. Since no ancient reference to the wall survives, scholars have contested the date and purpose of the wall's construction, placing it anywhere between the Geometric Age and Hellenistic eras. While directing the excavation of a watchtower above the wall, Munn's chance discovery of a datable sherd in the wall's remains fixed the date of the wall's construction at 378 B. C. , the onset of the three-year Boiotian War. Munn offers an absorbing narrative account of the war, and his descriptions and effective use of literary extracts render a vivid portrayal of the opposing generals, military tactics, and battle scenes.

CORINTH: THE SANCTUARY OF DEMETER AND KORE The Terracotta Sculpture
Long Scratch to front panel of DJ (about 5-6 cm) else no other faults. ; Corinth Volume XVIII.5; 315 pages; The fifth part of the Corinth volume dedicated to the Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore publishes the large-scale terracotta sculpture found in the sanctuary. Ranging in date from the late 7th through the 4th century B.C., the sculpture consists of fragments from 132 to as many as 147 statues, from half- to nearly life-size. These are, for the most part, statues of young males, both draped and nude, although females and seated infants appear as well. Several introductory chapters discuss the types represented, the findspots and possible original placement of the sculptures, and the techniques involved in their construction. This volume greatly expands our knowledge of the history of Corinth, broadening our understanding both of cult practices at the site and of the manufacture of terracotta sculpture.

LIFE AND LABOUR IN LATE ROMAN SILCHESTER Excavations in Insula IX since 1997
Very light edgwear else fine. Gift inscription from one editor (Fulford) to ffep. ; Britannia Monograph Series No. 22; 384 pages; The Society of Antiquaries' excavation of Silchester's Insula IX in 1893-4 left most of the stratigraphy undisturbed. A new programme of work has shown that the Insula underwent radical change, c. AD 250/300, with the construction of new workshop and residential buildings on the orientation of the Roman street-grid, following the demolition of mid-Roman buildings arranged on different, pre- and early Roman alignments. The plans of several properties and individual buildings were recovered, and analysis of the rich range of artefactual and biological data has allowed a detailed and differentiated characterisation of the life and occupations of the inhabitants in the 4th century. The context of the 5th century ogham-inscribed stone is explored and the history of the insula is followed into the 5th/6th century. ; Signed by Editor

LEUCARUM Excavations at the Roman Auxiliary Fort at Loughor, West Glamorgan 1982-84 and 1987-88
Very light edgewear else Fine. Small crease to back upper corner. ; Britannia Monograph Series; 448 pages; The Roman fort at Loughor was founded in c. AD 75 and occupied continuously until the early 120s. The fort was then reduced and was reoccupied from c. 270 until the early fourth century. Excavation was concentrated on the defences and part of the interior. Detailed examination of the defences enabled useful analysis of construction methods. In the interior of the Flavio-Trajanic fort, a sequence of granaries was followed by a series of praetoria. Analysis of these buildings has enabled a reconsideration of the form and function of Commander's houses in auxiliary forts. This volume includes full reports on the finds which included coins, lamps, glass and intaglios.

ARCHAEOLOGY MEETS SCIENCE: BIOMOLECULAR INVESTIGATIONS IN BRONZE The Primary Scientific Evidence 1997-2003
328 pages; This book has come out of a project that pioneered, and is continuing to pioneer, the in-depth application of state of the art scientific analyses to ceramic artefacts and skeletal material. The vases and skeletons of Bronze Age Greece which are the subjects of this comprehensive study, do not appear as they do in their usual format - illustrations in a book with descriptions of contexts. In this project, and therefore in this book, each object is revealed from the inside, and because of this, it has a different story to tell - what people ate and drank in everyday life, the diet and health of the people who lived in Bronze Age Greece. By means of organic residue and stable isotope analysis, knowledge has been extended beyond anything previously gleaned through normal archaeological research. There are some fascinating insights, such as the origin of modern Greek retsina, which was traced first to the time of Agammemnon, then to Crete in the 17th century BC and finally to the Early Minoan Period, c. 2000 BC. The results of this ground breaking project have been presented in 7 international exhibitions, starting with the National Archaeological Museum in Athens in 1999. It is the most widely travelled exhibition of Greek artefacts ever mounted. This volume gives the reader the ultimate "story within the story": the primary scientific evidence behind the work that has been carried out up to 2003. It has been written by the world renowned scientists who carried out the work.

PERIKLEAN ATHENS AND ITS LEGACY Problems and Perspectives
Very minor shelfwear to DJ. Small tiny ding to front board else Fine. ; 330 pages; The late fifth century BC was the golden age of ancient Athens. Under the leadership of the renowned soldier-statesman Perikles, Athenians began rebuilding the Akropolis, where they created the still awe-inspiring Parthenon. Athenians also reached a zenith of artistic achievement in sculpture, vase painting, and architecture, which provided continuing inspiration for many succeeding generations. The specially commissioned essays in this volume offer a fresh, innovative panorama of the art, architecture, history, culture, and influence of Periklean Athens. Written by leading experts in the field, the articles cover a wide range of topics, including: * An evaluation of Perikles' military leadership during the early stages of the Peloponnesian War. * Iconographical and iconological studies of vase paintings, wall paintings, and sculpture. * Explorations of the Parthenon and other monuments of the Athenian Akropolis. *The legacy of Periklean Athens and its influence upon later art. * Assessments of the modern reception of the Akropolis. As a whole, this collection of essays proves that even a well-explored field such as Periklean Athens can yield new treasures when mined by perceptive and seasoned investigators.
