THE ART OF BUILDING IN THE CLASSICAL WORLD Vision Craftsmanship and Linear Perspective in Greek and Roman Architecture
Cambridge University Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2011. Hardcover. 1107002354 . 262 pages; This book examines the application of drawing in the design process of classical architecture exploring how the tools and techniques of drawing developed for architecture subsequently shaped theories of vision and representations of the universe in science and philosophy. Building on recent scholarship that examines and reconstructs the design process of classical architecture John R. Senseney focuses on technical drawing in the building trade as a model for the expression of visual order showing that the techniques of ancient Greek drawing actively determined concepts about the world. He argues that the uniquely Greek innovations of graphic construction determined principles that shaped the massing special qualities and refinements of buildings and the manner in which order itself was envisioned. . ALBA LONGA HISTOIRE D'UNE LÉGENDE Recherches Sur L'Archéologie La Religion Les Traditions De L'Ancien Latium
École Française De Rome. Very Good with no dust jacket. 2008. Hardcover. 2728304122 . 2 volume set. Light bumping to extremities else Fine. ; 2 Volume Set COMPLETE. THE ATHENIAN AGORA: VESSEL GLASS Volume XXXIV
American School of Classical Studies At Athens. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 2009. Hardcover. 0876612346 . Very light bump to top of spine else Fine. ; The Athenian Agora. Volume XXXIV. ; Vol. 34; 196 pages; Greek and Roman glass from vessels of all sizes and shapes is discussed in this volume which presents 402 fragments of glass vessels excavated in the Athenian Agora. Only 36 pieces date to the Classical and Hellenistic periods when the Agora was at the height of its importance and just 15 are assigned to the 9th to 19th centuries. The remaining 350 are subdivided into four periods covering the Roman and Late Antique history of Athens: 86 B. C. To ca . A. D. 100 A. D. 100 to 267 A. D. 267 to 395 and A. D. 395 to ca. 700. The fragments all have a findspot which allows the author to make some comments about the possible uses of the original vessels. The volume is divided into the following sections: history of the project historical overview important contexts discussion of the catalogue by period and by shape catalogue deposit summaries concordance. Most catalogues of ancient glass present pieces out of context where function and date can only be guessed at. This volume by publishing the main types of glass from a single site provides richer contextual information and will thus be an essential reference work for archaeologists and specialists in ancient art. . MILETOS THE ORNAMENT OF IONIA A History of the City to 400 B.C.E.
University of Michigan Press. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 2001. Hardcover. 047211199X . Very light shelfwear to DJ else Fine. ; 320 pages; Situated on the southwest coast of modern Turkey Miletos stood for centuries as one of the paramount cities in the Hellenic world a gateway between the East and West. It became especially famous as the most prolific mother city in Greek history sending out at least forty-five known primary and secondary settlements into the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea while at home developing into an intellectual and artistic center and one of the birthplaces of Western science and philosophy. A history of Miletos is long overdue. Despite the significance of this city in antiquity and the important results of ongoing excavations there the last full-scale discussion of Miletos was written in 1915. In Miletos the Ornament of Ionia Vanessa B. Gorman provides the first and only modern integrated history of the city collecting and scrutinizing sources about Miletos for the period stretching from the first signs of habitation until 400 B. C. E. This book reviews the archaeological evidence for the physical city demonstrates the likelihood of both Minoan and Mycenaean settlements there and substantiates the fact of the Persian destruction and refoundation of Miletos along orthogonal lines. With insight and diligence Gorman surveys the cults known to have existed during this period; traces the political progress of the city through monarchy oligarchy tyranny and democracy; and sketches the terms of its subjugation under the Persians and later the Athenians. Providing a detailed and up-to-date account of the development of one of the major urban centers of Asia Minor Gorman's book will engage classicists historians and Near Eastern specialists. . THE DEFENSE OF ATTICA The Dema Wall and the Boiotian War of 378-375 B. C.
University of California Press. Fine in Fine dust jacket. 1993. Hardcover. 0520076850 . Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; 259 pages; The enigmatic three-mile-long Dema wall in the countryside outside ancient Athens has perplexed archaeologists and historians for decades. When was it built and what role did it play in Greek military history In a tour de force of archaeological and historical argument Mark H. Munn establishes the place of the Dema wall in the defense of Athens and offers a completely new perspective on the Boiotian War. Since no ancient reference to the wall survives scholars have contested the date and purpose of the wall's construction placing it anywhere between the Geometric Age and Hellenistic eras. While directing the excavation of a watchtower above the wall Munn's chance discovery of a datable sherd in the wall's remains fixed the date of the wall's construction at 378 B. C. the onset of the three-year Boiotian War. Munn offers an absorbing narrative account of the war and his descriptions and effective use of literary extracts render a vivid portrayal of the opposing generals military tactics and battle scenes. . CRETE IN TRANSITION Pottery Styles and Island History in the Archaic and Classical Periods
American School of Classical Studies at Athens. Fine. 2010. Softcover. 0876615450 . Hesperia Supplement No. 45; 380 pages; This work presents a classification system and absolute chronology for black-gloss wares from Crete establishing the first local and regional ceramic sequences during the period from 600 to 400 B.C. This new chronological foundation of datable pottery from excavated sites fills in the so-called 6th/5th-century gap and dispels the prevailing view that this was a period of decline in population and one of artistic and cultural impoverishment. The 6th century heralded important changes in Cretan society reflected in the reorganization of burial grounds new patterns of sanctuary dedication and the circulation of exotica among the elite. The study reveals unsuspected connections with mainland Greece especially Sparta and Athens. Historians and archaeologists will find the author's conclusions and their implications to be of considerable interest. . American School of Classical Studies at Athens paperback

ROME IN THE PYRENEES Lugdunum and the Convenae from the First Century B. C. to the Seventh Century A. D.
Routledge. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 2008. Hardcover. 0415426863 . Very light shelfwear else Fine. ; Routledge Monographs in Classical Studies; 184 pages; Rome in the Pyrenees is a unique treatment in English of the archaeological and historical evidence for an important Roman town in Gaul Lugdunum in the French Pyrenees and for its surrounding people the Convenae. The book opens with the creation of the Convenae by Pompey the Great in the first century B. C. And runs down to the great Frankish siege in A. D. 585 and its aftermath. Now the town of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges Lugdunum is one of the best-known Roman towns in Gaul with a rich selection of monuments at the town itself and important remains in the countryside such as the classic villa at Montmaurin or the votive altars cinerary caskets and sarcophagi in the local marble. The book traces how the Convenae used their marble to help create their identity invisible before Pompey but amongst the richest and most distinctive in Gaul by the second century A. D. Drawing on his own excavations at Saint-Bertrand and the extensive earlier and recent work there Simon Esmonde Cleary combines a clear description of the buildings and monuments of Lugdunum and of its countryside with a discussion of what they can tell us about the impact of Rome on this remote corner of its empire. Contains a guide to the visible Roman remains of the area. . Routledge hardcover

ARCHAEOLOGY MEETS SCIENCE: BIOMOLECULAR INVESTIGATIONS IN BRONZE The Primary Scientific Evidence 1997-2003
Oxbow Books. Fine with no dust jacket. 2008. Hardcover. 1842172387 . 328 pages; This book has come out of a project that pioneered and is continuing to pioneer the in-depth application of state of the art scientific analyses to ceramic artefacts and skeletal material. The vases and skeletons of Bronze Age Greece which are the subjects of this comprehensive study do not appear as they do in their usual format - illustrations in a book with descriptions of contexts. In this project and therefore in this book each object is revealed from the inside and because of this it has a different story to tell - what people ate and drank in everyday life the diet and health of the people who lived in Bronze Age Greece. By means of organic residue and stable isotope analysis knowledge has been extended beyond anything previously gleaned through normal archaeological research. There are some fascinating insights such as the origin of modern Greek retsina which was traced first to the time of Agammemnon then to Crete in the 17th century BC and finally to the Early Minoan Period c. 2000 BC. The results of this ground breaking project have been presented in 7 international exhibitions starting with the National Archaeological Museum in Athens in 1999. It is the most widely travelled exhibition of Greek artefacts ever mounted. This volume gives the reader the ultimate "story within the story": the primary scientific evidence behind the work that has been carried out up to 2003. It has been written by the world renowned scientists who carried out the work. . Oxbow Books hardcover

Small crease to back upper corner. ; Britannia Monograph Series; 448 pages; The Roman fort at Loughor was founded in c. AD 75 and occupied continuously until the early 120s. Gift inscription from one editor Fulford to ffep. ; Britannia Monograph Series No. 22; 384 pages; The Society of Antiquaries' excavation of Silchester's Insula IX in 1893-4 left most of the stratigraphy undisturbed. The plans of several properties and individual buildings were recovered and analysis of the rich range of artefactual and biological data has allowed a detailed and differentiated characterisation of the life and occupations of the inhabitants in the 4th century.
