1935. 1935. Very good. - sc What is offered here are 4 original pen & ink wash drawings by the caricaturist Wyncie King depicting members of FDR's administration. Each 5-3/4 inch high by 4 inch wide drawing is penned on separate 15 inch high by 10-1/4 inch wide Strathmore art board two of which bear Strathmore's blind stamp. Each drawing is signed in ink by the artist Wyncie King and additionally captioned in pencil under the image.<p>The drawings respectively depict Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins here represented as "H.R.G. Grand Duchess Fanny Perkinsova" and depicted seated with a crown perching on her hat with a pearl necklace and military medals and ribbons adorning her dress. Signed by the artist the drawing is further inscribed and signed "To Katharine Dayton with admiration and best wishes from Wyncie King". <p>Vice President John Garner here represented as "Prince Garneravitch the Heir Apparent" is depicted with bushy eyebrows. Seated on a throne while holding a gavel he is attired in Eastern European style military dress uniform with ribbons and medals.<p>Postmaster General James A. Farley here represented with the caption "Grand Duke Jaime de la Farlg used to say that four out of five had pieorrhea". He is depicted in military dress uniform serving a slice of pie as he holds a knife up in the other hand. This drawing is also further inscribed and signed "To Katharine Dayton with admiration and best wishes from Wyncie King".<p>Donald Richberg General Counsel of the National Recovery Administration the NRA is here represented as "The Dashing Spinach Grandee Senor Don Richeberg". He is also attired in military dress uniform with medals and ribbons standing cap in hand with one fist resting on his hip.<p>Though there are pinholes to the edges of the art boards with staining and darkening along the edges and some wear and damage to the corners the original drawings are themselves mostly unaffected and in excellent condition.<p>Katharine Dayton has penned her name and address on the verso of each of the boards with annotations penned in ink in her hand identifying the subject of each caricature and identifying these as "illustrations for my 'Memoirs of Princess Nira' Saturday Evening Post K.D." Katharine Dayton's "Riding Backwards: The Memoirs of Princess Nira of Newdeal" were serialized in The Saturday Evening Post in 1935.<p>John Garner was President Roosevelt's Vice-President from 1933 to 1941. Frances Perkins served as FDR's Secretary of Labor from 1933-45 and James A. Farley as Postmaster General from 1933-40. 1943. 1943. Very good. - sc A superb 10-1/2 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide color portrait of FDR on 15-1/2 inch high by 12 inch wide heavy stock. The print a color collotype by A. Jaffe" is entitled "Franklin D. Roosevelt / painted by Elizabeth Shoumatoff in April 1943". The superb image depicts a dignified white haired FDR from the chest up attired in suit & tie over white shirt with a dark cape draped over his shoulders. There is some light foxing and discoloration to the ample borders and tape remnants on the verso. Very good. <p>A rare portrait of the President.<p>Elizabeth Shoumatoff was the painter of "the unfinished portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt". A friend of Lucy Rutherford's Elizabeth Shoumatoff had been commissioned to paint a portrait of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Sketching the president as he chatted and read papers Shoumatoff initially painted a small portrait of the President. It was agreed that the President would sit for her again at a later time and that she would then paint a much larger portrait. She was invited back to Warm Springs Georgia and arrived on April 9th 1945 to spend the weekend and paint the larger portrait. At noon on April 12th 1945 as she sketched and painted the President reached for his head compaining of a terrible headache collapsed and lost consciousness. FDR was pronounced dead at 3:35 p.m. (1943). unknown

Providence RI: J. B. Coleman 1945. 1945. Very good. - sc Oblong small quarto 7-1/2 inches high by 9-3/4 inches wide. The editorial is printed on one side only & fills 2 pages of a sheet of cream stock folded once to form 4 pages. The sheet is slightly darkened at the edges & along the fold. Together with a letter to Mr. J. B. Coleman of Providence RI typed on a sheet of New York Times letterhead 8-1/2 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide signed "Charles Merz" by the editor. The edges of the letterhead are darkened. It is folded twice for mailing and the top & bottom edges are slightly creased. Very good. <p>Charles Merz editor of the New York Times writes to J. B. Coleman of Providence R.I. on April 16 1945 to say that The Times has no plans to reprint the editorial in another form "but would be glad to give you our permission to reprint it in a small pamphlet with credit to The Times for the purposes described in your letter".<p>The powerful editorial dated April 13 1945 mourns the passing of Roosevelt praising his leadership during World War II: "A great and gallant wartime leader has died almost in the very hour of the victory to which he led the way. It is a cruel and bitter irony that Franklin D. Roosevelt should not have lived to see the Allied armies march into Berlin. It is a hard and stunning blow to lose the genius and the inspiration of his leadership in this decisive moment of the war."<p>We have not been able to locate any other reprint of the editorial. Groton Connecticut: Life Photo August 12 1940. 1940. Good. - An original 10 inch high by 13 inch wide black & white photograph by Life photographer Thomas D. McAvoy. The image captures President Roosevelt wearing his lucky white felt hat seated next to Connecticut Governor Raymond Baldwin. Both are surrounded by reporters following a visit to the Electric Boat Company during the war. "Life Photo by Thomas D. McAvoy" is stamped in purple on the verso. The edges of the photograph are slightly rubbed with a few scratches to the edges and faint creases to the corners. Once mounted there are glue stains to the verso. Good. <p>General Dynamics Electric Boat Company was founded as the Electric Boat Company in 1899 and supplied 74 submarines and 398 PT Boats for the navy during the Second World War.<p>The photojournalist Thomas D. McAvoy 1905-1966 was one of the first photographers to use a Leica for news coverage. He is well known for chronicling the Presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Together with Margaret Bourke-White Peter Stackpole and Alfred Eisenstaedt he was one of the first photographers to work for Life Magazine. Chicago: Moffett 1912. Unbound. Near Fine. Sepia-toned gelatin silver photograph. Measuring 13" x 10". Photographer's mark in bottom right. About fine. Formally posed picture of the California delegation for the Progressive or Bull Moose Party with two banners in support of Teddy Roosevelt and an American flag in the background. Approximately 30 prosperous men and one woman are posed festooned with ribbons and badges. A carefully and contemporarily traced "Key" on a separate piece of thin paper reveals the identities of all but two of the people pictured. After Roosevelt's second term his chosen successor William Howard Taft was elected but when he failed sufficiently to institute Roosevelt's progressive policies the former president instituted a new party to regain the presidency. While he out-polled Taft the Democrat Woodrow Wilson won the election. Contemporary Bull Moose Party ephemera and memorabilia is uncommon and sought after this image with participants identified is of particular interest. Moffett unknown

The image though uncaptioned is of Teddy Roosevelt's home town of Oyster Bay on the day or days leading up to his return to his hometown on June 19 1910 upon his return from the Smithsonian-Roosevelt African Expedition 1909–10 where he managed to decimate a considerable number of big game animals. The town streets are bedecked with bunting reading "Welcome" and "Dee-Lighted" with Brooklyn Eagle signs along the downtown sidewalks read "Welcome Home Teddy. unknown

<p>This photograph was the basis for FDR's bust on the face of the American dime first minted in 1946. The portrait shows Roosevelt in half profile his strong jaw featured prominently.</p><p>The sitting was a jovial one with Roosevelt remarking "Are you trying to make me believe that a distinguished photographer like you doesn't have more impressive equipment Did your regular lamps fall into the ocean when you crossed the Atlantic"</p><p>Marcel Sternberger's subjects generally more used to a formal studio environment frequently remarked on the simplicity of his process. Sternberger used a handheld camera a plain black backdrop and simple lighting. This uncomplicated direct approach defined Sternberger's work: it allowed him to focus on the emotional state and character of the sitter rather than extraneous details.</p><br /><p>Gelatin silver print 16 x 20 in.
