Roosevelt, Franklin D
PROCEEDINGS AT THE CEREMONY IN COMMEMORATION OF THE ONE HUDRED AND FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY OF THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE FIRST CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES UNDER THE CONSTITUTION AT A JOINT SESSION OF THE CONGRESS IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES MARCH FOURTH NINETEEN THIRTY-NINE - INSCRIBED TO HIS YOUNGEST SON JOHN
Washington DC: U.S. Government Printing Office 1939. First Edition. The fifth and rarest of FDR's Christmas books bar none. Unlike all of the other books in the series this one has neither a printed nor an autographed colophon. A June 26 1939 letter from Pete Jarman Vice-Chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on Printing to Steve Early states that he directed the Public Printer "to deliver to your office twenty-five copies of a deluxe edition of House Document No.212.entitled Proceedings at the Ceremony.". Seven of those copies are accounted for in the FDR Library. There is an inadvertent touch of comedy in the splendid photographs included in this volume. Three speakers preceded Roosevelt to the House rostrum with FDR waiting in a seat just to the right of the lectern. The photo of Speaker Bankhead shows the President sitting alert and erect. When Majority Leader Barkley spoke the President's head was resting in his hand but his eyes were still fastened on the speaker. By the time Charles Evans Hughes stepped up to the microphone Roosevelt seems to be slumping on the table his gaze absently fastened on the floor! All eyes were locked on him however when he gave his address. At one point he spoke about the "freedoms that are inherent in the right of free choice by free men and women" including the freedom of speech and religion. Two years later in his January message to Congress the President elaborated upon the "essential human freedoms" - freedom of speech and expression freedom of worship freedom from want and freedom from fear - which illustrator Norman Rockwell immortalized on four front covers of the Saturday Evening Post in 1943. See Halter p.193. One of 25 copies. Octavo 23.5cm; full indigo morocco with titles stamped in gilt within gilt borders on front cover; blue silk doubloures with presidential seal in gilt on front pastedown; ii473pp; illus. Presentation copy inscribed by Roosevelt to his youngest son John on the front endpaper: "John / from FDR / 1939." Spine skillfully rebacked corner tips refurbished else contents fresh; Very Good. Housed in a custom half morocco slipcase and chemise. U.S. Government Printing Office unknown

ROOSEVELT, Kermit (editor)
Quentin Roosevelt. A Sketch with Letters. Edited by Kermit Roosevelt
New York: Scribner's Sons 1921. Small quarto original deep green cloth with gilt lettering xii 282 pp. frontispiece and four plates. Touch of rubbing affects spine tips otherwise an attractive near-fine copy. Uncommon and significant biography of First War aviator Quentin Roosevelt son of Theodore Roosevelt and the only child of a United States President ever to be killed in combat.

Born into the patrician Roosevelt family Quentin was the son of Theodore by Lady Edith née Carow. Beloved son of the President who supported America's involvement in the First World War Quentin was mortally wounded in a dogfight over France and fell behind enemy lines. Buried with full honours by the Germans on account of his bravery and stature the grave was later found by 303 Engineers U.S. Army. The original grave-site at Chamery France is illustrated with a full-page plate.

This biography is principally epistolary and includes a heartfelt introduction by his brother Kermit. Indeed the loss of Quentin devastated the Roosevelt family and contributed to the death of his father shortly afterwards in January 1919. This biography is appended with memorial poems by Minna Irving Mary Stewart Cutting Harry D. Thompson Charlotte Schnéegans and others. Noffsinger 1250. Scribner's Sons unknown

Roosevelt, Theodore
Ranch Life and The Hunting-Trail
London: T. Fisher Unwin "The Century Co. New-York" noted underneath c1888. Presumed First U.K. Edition First printing. Hardcover. Fair. Frederic Remington. The format is approximately 9.75 inches by 12.25 inches. 6 186 2 pages. Black and White illustrations. Decorative front and back cover. Cover has wear soiling and some staining. This is a large book with some hinge weakness noted. Bookplate of Edmund Giles Loder inside front cover. The first edition was published in quarto. Examination of an image of an authenticated U.S. first edition shows an identical decorated front cover. No American president has been closer to the working life of the West than Theodore Roosevelt. From 1884 to 1886 he built up his ranch on the Little Missouri in Dakota Territory accepting the inevitable toil and hardships. He met the unique characters of the Bad Lands—mountain men degenerate buffalo hunters Indians and cowboys—and observed their changes as the West became more populated. Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail describes Roosevelt's routine labor and extraordinary adventures including a stint as a deputy sheriff pursuing three horse thieves through the cold of winter. The book expresses his lifelong delight in physical hardihood and tests of nerve. Frederic Sackrider Remington October 4 1861 - December 26 1909 was an American painter illustrator sculptor and writer who specialized in the genre of Western American Art. His works are known for depicting the Western United States in the last quarter of the 19th century and featuring such images as cowboys American Indians and the US Cavalry. Remington received a commission to do eighty-three illustrations for a book by Theodore Roosevelt Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail to be serialized in The Century Magazine before publication. The 29-year-old Roosevelt had a similar Western adventure to Remington losing money on a ranch in North Dakota the previous year but gaining experience which made him an "expert" on the West. The assignment gave Remington's career a big boost and forged a lifelong connection with Roosevelt. Sir Edmund Giles Loder 2nd Baronet 7 August 1849 - 14 April 1920 was an English aristocrat landowner and plantsman. His father was Sir Robert Loder 1st Baronet a landowner and Conservative politician. He was educated at Eton College and graduated from Trinity College a constituent college of the University of Cambridge. Loder was active as a plant collector breeder and grower. He developed hybrid rhododendrons. The plants were named the Loderi hybrids and group in his honour. Three Loderi King George Loderi Pink Diamond and Loder's White have received the Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society. T. Fisher Unwin ["The Century Co.
