Origini e principi delle rivoluzioni americana e francese
br. La Rivoluzione francese (1789-1799), che segna l'avvento dell'età delle ideologie, viene spesso accostata a quella detta "americana" (1775-1783), da cui riprenderebbe non pochi motivi e riferimenti, e di cui sarebbe da considerare una diretta discendente. Nonostante fin dal secolo XVIII non siano mancati studiosi e osservatori che abbiano vigorosamente smentito questa convinzione diffusa, la vulgata delle rivoluzioni "sorelle" ha continuato a diffondersi. In realtà, come spiega un insospettabile osservatore diretto di entrambi gli avvenimenti, il diplomatico berlinese Friedrich von Gentz (1764 1832), traduttore in tedesco dell'opera-prima par excellence della Contro-Rivoluzione europea - le Riflessioni sulla Rivoluzione in Francia del pensatore e statista angloirlandese Edmund Burke (1729- 1797) -, quella "americana" fu "una Rivoluzione non fatta ma impedita". Così Gentz si esprime nello studio "L'origine e i princìpi della rivoluzione americana" confrontati con l'origine e i princìpi di quella francese, del 1800, qui presentato per la prima volta al pubblico italiano con l'Introduzione del cura-tore dell'ultima edizione statunitense (1955), il pensatore Russell Kirk (1918-1994), che costituisce la prima analisi storica di taglio comparativo dei due grandi avvenimenti.

brossura «Ho assunto un filosofo domato!». Con queste parole di Raffaele Mattioli, pronunciate nei primi anni Trenta, ha inizio uno straordinario rapporto di amicizia e collaborazione fra due personaggi singolari: lo studioso di storia delle dottrine politiche, poi americanista, Antonello Gerbi (1904-1976), capo dell'Ufficio Studi della Banca Commerciale a Milano, e Raffaele Mattioli (1895-1973), il 'banchiere-letterato', la cui figura eterodossa spicca nel panorama economico e culturale del Novecento. Utilizzando soprattutto gli inediti e ricchi carteggi familiari, e numerose altre fonti archivistiche, Sandro Gerbi, figlio di Antonello, racconta con piglio narrativo la storia del loro sodalizio quarantennale attraverso la formula della biografia parallela. Molti gli 'attori' importanti, quali Giuseppe Toeplitz, Luigi Einaudi, Benedetto Croce, Giovanni Malagodi, Sergio Solmi, Ugo La Malfa, Riccardo Bacchelli, Palmiro Togliatti e altri; al centro, però, rimangono sempre i due protagonisti principali, esponenti di una classe dirigente competente e colta, oggi pressoché estinta. L'essere e le sue determinazioni. Sulla monadologia di Bernardino Varisco
br. Bernardino Varisco (1850-1933) è una figura di spicco del panorama filosofico italiano del primo Novecento. Il suo nome si accompagna ad altri grandi pensatori di quel periodo, oggi "poco frequentati", come, ad esempio, Bonatelli, Ardigò, Vailati, Martinetti, Juvalta, Zamboni e Moretti-Costanzi. La filosofia di Varisco si distingue nettamente in questo panorama per la propria originale impronta monadologica - che per certi aspetti consente di avvicinarlo a Whitehead -, costruita non solo sulla scorta del confronto con Leibniz, ma anche attraverso il dialogo con diversi altri pensatori. Nella prima parte di questo lavoro viene esposta l'intera evoluzione della monadologia matura di Varisco (a partire da I Massimi Problemi (1910) in avanti), svolgendone i differenti aspetti metafisici, morali e teologici. Qui sono messi in evidenza in modo privilegiato il pluralismo coscienzialistico del filosofo, la sua nota interpretazione morale dell'"essere ex veritate" e la dottrina dell'"autolimitazione divina". Nella seconda parte trovano spazio alcuni approfondimenti critici, attraverso un confronto mirato con Leibniz, Bruno e Rosmini.

Scacchi matti. Analisi di tre folli deliri nel gioco dei re
br. Questo saggio ha come oggetto il nesso tra gli scacchi e la follia. Si analizzano tre opere letterarie del primo Novecento, in particolare nella "La difesa di Lu?in" di Vladimir Nabokov, nel "Murphy" di Samuel Beckett e nella "Novella degli scacchi" di Stefan Zweig. Se durante il medioevo letteratura e scacchi erano associati al corteggiamento o all'amore, nel Novecento essi si associano alla follia. L'obiettivo è quello di capire come l'ossessione per un gioco, seppur il più nobile tra essi, possa condurre alla pazzia e come la sottile e claustrofobica geometria di cui esso è composto, con le sue 64 caselle e le praticamente infinite combinazioni, porti i protagonisti dei tre romanzi presi in esame a giungere ai più folli deliri. Il legame tra gli scacchi e la follia si può già rinvenire alle origini del gioco stesso come descrive mirabilmente Paolo Mauresing nell'incipit della "Variante di Lüneburg".
