Exhibition of Early English Earthenware
Burlington Fine Arts Club London post-exhibition so second edition 1914. Buckram over bevelled boards gilt cover-title top edge gilt 4to 32 cm. xlvi 1 150 1 pp 50 plates. Uncommon. The post-exhibition illustrated catalogue. It includes substantial introductions on Dwight's Stoneware by Sir Arthur H. Church and on Slip Ware and Delft Ware by J. W. L. Glaisher. Other material relates to Tudor wares Stone wares Astbury ware salt-glaze work etc. From R.L. Hobson's introduction: "The work of the old English potter as illustrated in this Exhibition is for the most part a purely native product a rustic craft home grown and racy of the soil. It is quaint homely and unsophisticated and if we except the phenomenon of Dwight's figures it is without any lofty pretensions but intended rather to supply the needs and to ornament the houses of simple folk. The mediaeval pottery was made for the kitchen and the cellar the slipware for the ale-house and the cottage. Delft is a cheap substitute for plate and Chinese porcelain and though the Staffordshire potters in the last fifty years of our period catered for the tea-table the decorations of their wares quaint and original as they are were but the children of a rustic imagination untrammeled by the rules of arL On the other hand some of the Delft and the finer stonewares made in London and in the large towns of Bristol and Liverpool are imbued with foreign ideas and betray a more cosmopolitan spirit. Dwight and Elers followed German and Chinese models; and Italian French and Chinese influences are apparent in the Delft decoration. But even these foreign types became strangely anglicized in the process of repro- duction and none of them has left a lasting impress on the pottery of this country. Bookplate of John R. Menzies on front pastedown endpaper spine faded and covers slightly rubbed endpapers faintly foxed and a little scattered minor spotting elsewhere otherwise Very Good. Exhibition of English Embroidery Executed Prior to the Middle of the XVI Century
Burlington Fine Arts Club London post-exhibition so second edition 1905. Cloth over bevelled boards gilt cover-title top edge gilt 4to 41 cm. 87 pp 30 plates of which the frontispiece and 8 others are in colour. The post-exhibition illustrated catalogue. From the introduction - "Among the arts which flourished in England in mediaeval times none was more in repute than that of embroidery. English work was specially valued abroad and was frequently recorded as such by the scribes who penned the wills of ecclesiastics and inventories of church goods as early as the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The term opus anglicanum is found in French Italian and Spanish documents of this class and it was certainly regarded not only as denoting the country of origin but as indicating also the value and excellence of the work. But English embroidery was seen and appreciated on the continent of Europe before the thirteenth century
William of Poitiers the chronicler and chaplain of William the Conqueror states that . Englishwomen were highly skilled in embroidery and weaving. Farther back still we have the most conclusive evidence of the skill of Anglo-Saxon embroiderers. The highest level of excellence in English embroidery was reached in the later part of the thirteenth century. The greater number of the fine examples of anglicanum to be found in England France Italy Spain and elsewhere belong approximately to the period between the years 1270 and 1330. The examples preserved are almost invariably copes many of which are in a mutilated state owing to their having been cut to serve other purposes. The subjects represented cover a wide range. Bookplate of John R. Menzies on front pastedown endpaper covers slightly rubbed with minor wear at spine-ends some scattered light foxing minor edgewear to 3 leaves which slightly project from the textblock otherwise a Very Good copy. Exhibition of a Collection of Silversmiths' Work of European Origin
Printed for the Burlington Fine Arts Club London post-exhibition so second edition 1901. Cloth over bevelled boards gilt cover-title large 4to 41 cm. lvii 185 1 pp 120 collotype plates with guard sheets with printed captions. The post-exhibition illustrated catalogue finely printed at the Chiswick Press. From the introduction: " The examples of English work form as might be expected the most remarkable feature of the Exhibition. A series of rose-water dishes and ewers of English work such as that commencing with Lord Newton's the Norwich Corporation the Royal one from Windsor Eton College the Clothworkers' Company and Sir Evelyn Ashley's could not well be surpassed Case I. The great series of English cups many historic such as those of Pepys Camden and Sir Hugh Myddleton's Case I Nos. 9 10 15 are as interesting for their workmanship as from their associations. It was only in the days of Elizabeth that silver-plate began to displace wooden and pewter utensils in the houses of the people but before the close of the century in which she died lustres standards tables jars andirons sconces and mirrors were fashioned in silver. Examples of many of these objects are in the large wall cases G and K. These have been contributed by Her Majesty Queen Victoria and the owners of Wentworth Castle and of Knole. Lovers of English silver-plate of later date will find much to study in the matchless series of bowls tankards beakers flagons tazzas and cups in the wall cases B C D F and I. .A few silver-mounted weapons of superb quality two of the finest contributed by Her Majesty Queen Victoria and some book-bindings are placed in Case A. Bookplate of John R. Menzies on front pastedown endpaper spine and top inch of rear board faded spine ends slightly worn and covers slightly rubbed a little minor foxing otherwise a Very Good copy. From the introduction: " It is with a view to calling attention to their documentary importance in relation to pictures and architecture as well as to their intrinsic beauty and to the accomplishment of their makers that this exhibition has been got together. Its range is from the ninth to the sixteenth century and it may be confidently asserted that so many splendid examples of the Illuminator's art and so various in their excellence have never before been showed in a single room. The present catalogue .contains eight plates which will recall to those who saw the exhibition the general appearance of the upright cases and the relative sizes of the books displayed in them; besides a hundred and fifty-four plates in which a hundred and sixty-five of the books and framed cuttings are reproduced.
