Copjec, Joan (edited by)
Shades of Noir
London: Verso 1995. A Fine unmarked copy. xii 300 pages. Illustrated throughout. Paris summer 1946. This moment marks an important event in cinema history not of production but of exhibition. For this was the summer when after the hiatus of the Second Wold War French critics were given the opportunity to view films from Hollywood. The films they saw including The Maltese Falcon Double Indemnity Laura Murder My Sweet and The Woman in the Window prompted the naming and theorization of a new phenomena: Film Noir. The book whilst sympathetic towards the early French critics is a collection of original essays which attempt to move beyond their first fascinated look. Beginning with the anatomy of that look - of the 'poujadist' climate that nourished it and the imminent collapse of the Hollywood Studio system that gave it its mournful inflection. Later contributions analyse the re-emergence of noir in recent years. 11. Soft Cover. Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Verso Paperback

Coquelin, Alexandre, actor (1848-1909).
Autograph letter signed ("Coquelin Cadet"). Paris, 16 July 1886.
8vo. 2 pp. on bifolium. To an unidentified recipient, whose name was unfamiliar to Coquelin, thanking him for a letter and assuring him that the entire troupe would be glad to return to Trouville and perform there. It is difficult, he writes, to perform Chamillac: "[...] Il sera bien difficile de monter Chamillac. Trop de monde! [...]". - He further asks whether the receipient is not, perchance, the poet who published in the newspaper of Deauville, is named Docquois and is a fellow native of Boulogne-sur-mer? He once received verses from one M. Docquois, and if his correspondent is identical to that person, Coquelin would like to know. - The younger brother of the actor Benoît Constant Coquelin was, like him, a student of the Paris conservatory. He made his début at the Odéon and was a member of the Comédie-Française since 1868. - On stationery with embossed monogram "MG". In an old collector's envelope.

Coquelin, Benoît-Constant (known as Coquelin aîné), French actor (1841-1909).
2 autograph letters signed. [Paris, postmarked 22 and 28 May 1898].
Oblong 8vo. Together 1½ pp. With autograph addresses. Playful letters full of coquetry to a Mademoiselle Piron, probably the actress and dancer Léa Piron. Choisissez [...]" (22 May 1898, postmark). (28 May 1898, postmark). - The 1897 premiere of Edmond Rostand's "Cyrano de Bergerac" with Coquelin in the leading role was a resounding success for the actor, who later played Cyrano alongside Sarah Bernhardt on tour in the US. Coquelin even resumed the role in a short film that was produced for the 1900 Paris Exposition. The film was colour-tinted and synchronized to a wax cylinder recording and is considered the first film made with both colour and sound. - Traces of folds, some minor tears and minimal foxing.
