‎Art and Faith in Venice is the first study of the Man of Sorrows in the art and culture of Venice and her dominions across three centuries. A subject imbued with deep spiritual and metaphorical significance, the image pervaded late-Medieval Europe but assumed in the Venetian world an unusually rich and long life. The book presents a biography, first tracing the transmission of the image as a vertical, half-length figure devoid of narrative from the Byzantine East c. 1275 and then exploring its gradual adaptation and diffusion across the Venetian state to a wide range of media, reaching from small manuscript illuminations to panel paintings, altarpieces, tombs and liturgical furnishings. Analyzing its nomenclature, visual form and layered meanings, the study demonstrates how this universal image played a prominent role responding to public and private devotions in the spiritual and cultural life of Venice and its larger political sphere of influence. Catherine Puglisi and William Barcham have written extensively on the Man of Sorrows and co-curated an exhibition on the subject in New York in 2011. Each also publishes separately, Puglisi on Caravaggio and Bolognese art, and Barcham on Venetian 18th-century painting. ‎Édition originale illustrée de 4 lithographies en couleurs de l'artiste mexicain Rufino Tamayo, tirées par Desjobert, et de deux ornements de style méso-américain rose, répétés sur toutes les pages de texte. Un des 229 exemplaires sur B.F.K. de Rives. Rédigé en 1949, ce long poème est le fruit de toute l'influence et des recherches artistiques de Péret qui vécut au Mexique de 1941 à 1948. Durant ce séjour, il débute une anthologie des mythes, légendes et contes populaires d'Amérique (qui ne sera édité qu'après sa mort, en 1960) et se passionne pour la culture méso-américaine. Dans cet ouvrage, Péret fait une histoire du Mexique en partant de la civilisation précolombienne passant par la Conquête, puis l'Indépendance et enfin la Révolution mexicaines. Il traduit parfois littéralement des expressions ou des extraits de la mythologie locale, produisant ainsi des images poétiques mystérieuses, chères aux surréalistes. Second edition, the first one available: due to nationalization of the publisher, very few copies of the 1951 first edition were printed. Subsequently reprints appeared in 1955, and 1957. The set consists of stationery designed by some of the most famous Chinese artists of the time, depicting various themes, including flowers, landscapes and portraits. All designs were carefully chosen from Rongbao Zhai’s extensive archive, accumulated over 300 years. - Produced by traditional Chinese colour printing methods - Dou Ban and Gong Hua - which ware capable of faithfully reproducing the vigour of the brush strokes, arguably the essence of Chinese paintings. Dou Ban is a multi-colour printing technique using multiple carved woodblocks, sometimes as many as seventy different blocks, to create a single multi-colour image. Gong Hua is the use of an uninked, imprinted block to emboss designs onto papers, allowing highlights on water or plants that are otherwise impossible to create with other woodblock printing methods. - Some edge flaws, fraying and wrinkling; occasional dust-staining to margins. Traces of original block-stitching in open margin. Preserving many of the original tissue guards. One of the bone cover latches broken.‎
