Table des Matières et Table des Auteurs en fin de texte ~ L'Artiste was a weekly illustrated review published from 1831 to 1904 supplying "the richest single source of contemporary commentary on artists, exhibitions and trends from the Romantic era to the end of the 19th century (Gallica).‎

‎Jules Gabriel Janin (1804 - 1874) a French writer and critic, published a series of reviews of the newly announced daguerreian process in L’ARTISTE p116 Daguère. Apparently, having attended Arago’s official announcement of the process on 19 August, Janin and others were left confused at the complexity of the daguerreian process. Having read Janin’s critique in the August 25 issue of L’ARTISTE, Daguerre called upon him to witness a demonstration of the process at his studio; at this point, only a very few had had such an opportunity. Daguerre started with polishing the plate and moved through all the steps to prepare for the exposure. The camera had been readied and focused on a view out of the window. After a six minute exposure, the plate was “developed” under the mercury vapors, fixed and washed. Upon viewing the finished plate, Janin commented, “The view looks as if it had been drawn by the hand of the fairy queen Mab.” Janin expressed his regret that Daguerre had not demonstrated his procedureon 19 August, for it would have shown that it was not too complicated, as Arago had made it appear. This review in the 1 September 1839 issue of L’ARTISTE recounts the demonstration. Also see: Gernsheim,Helmut. L.J.M. ‎Jungnickel wuchs als Sohn eines Tischlers in München auf wo er auch die Kunstgewerbe-schule besuchte. Weitere Ausbildungsstationen waren Wien und wiederum München. 1906 ließ er sich endgültig in Wien nieder und noch im selben Jahr gelang ihm der Durchbruch zur allgemeinen Anerkennung durch die Veröffentlichung einer Folge von Blättern in Schablonenspritztechnik. Auf der Wiener Kunstschau 1908 war er mit seinen ersten Farbholzschnitten vertreten. 1909 fertigte er eine Serie von Farbholzschnitten von Tieren aus der Menagerie von Schönbrunn. 1911 erhielt er die Professur an der Fachklasse für Graphische Kunst an der Kunstgewerbeschule zu Frankfurt am Main. Das künstlerische Ergebnis dieses Aufenthaltes ist eine Reihe von Farbholzschnitten mit Frankfurter Ansichten, die ihm in Fachkreisen hohes Lob einbrachten. Schon 1912 kehrte er nach Wien zurück, wo in der Folge weitere Tierholzschnitte entstanden.‎
