The complete poster contains large stone lithograph illustrative panels containing hundreds of figures of performers and audience together with separately printed title at top. Top of poster with title is largely in pieces about 80% complete; about 90% of poster panels are intact each in one piece but with minor chipping at edges. A fine work including one section with similarities to the poster for Brian de Palma's "Casualties of War" and possibly being originally a formal study for a poster for the movie. "MAY SUN was born in Shanghai and raised in Hong Kong and San Diego. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from UCLA and a Master of Fine Arts from Otis Art Institute. Her work ranges from theater-based performances to multi-media installations. Her public art projects include the Gateway Transit Center Culver City's City Hall Boston's Central Artery and a commemorative fence for Chinatown. Sun has taught at CalArts in Los Angeles and been an artist-in-residence at Monet's Gardens in Giverny France and at ArtPace in San Antonio TX." from the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority website. May Sun was the artist for the extensive work on the Hollywood/Western station in Hollywood. "The artist/architect team design for the Hollywood/Western Station attempts to reclaim the past for the future. The design pays homage to the native Mestizo heritage and original European settlement as well as to the panethnic backgrounds of more recent immigrants who constitute a large portion of Metro Rail users. Artist May Sun created copper granite and porcelain enamel panels with text and photographs set in a field of randomly-colored wall tiles. The panels depict bones of early camel horse and bison from excavations at the site statements about Gabrielino life in the area images of workers building the station and their counterparts on the old Red Car system and images of the adjacent neighborhood. As a tribute to the Red Car system that ended its service to Hollywood in the early 1940s two replicas of the old Pacific Electric Red Cars protrude from the mezzanine wall allowing passengers to reminisce about the past while contemplating what the future may hold. Passengers will also find a station floor enhanced with bright granite pavers some with small Mayan Chinese and Armenian symbols and others formed into pictograms of the four natural elements fire earth air and water. "We hope this station will become a generating impetus for the establishment of a greater sense of place and appreciation for the unique identity of the surrounding community and provide the city with a revitalized eastern gateway for Hollywood." Sir Francis Seymour Haden Cmg 1818 - 1910 Was An English Surgeon Best Known As An Etcher. He Was Born In London His Father Charles Thomas Haden Being A Well-Known Doctor And Lover Of Music. He Was Educated At Derby School Christ's Hospital And University College London And Also Studied At The Sorbonne Paris Where He Took His Degree In 1840. He Was Admitted As A Member Of The College Of Surgeons In London In 1842. In 1843-44 He Travelled To Italy And Made His First Sketches From Nature. Haden Attended No Art School And Had No Art Teachers But Between 1845 And 1848 He Studied Portfolios Of Prints Belonging To A Second-Hand Dealer Named Love Who Had A Shop In Bunhill Row The Old Quaker Quarter Of London. Arranging The Prints In Chronological Order He Studied The Works Of The Great Original Engravers Albrecht D�rer Lucas Van Leyden And Rembrandt. Haden's Printmaking Was Invigorated By His Much Younger Brother-In-Law James Mcneill Whistler At The Haden Home In Sloane Street In 1855. A Press Was Installed There And For A While Haden And Whistler Collaborated On A Series Of Etchings Of The Thames. The Relationship And Project Did Not Last. Haden Followed The Art Of Original Etching With Such Vigour That He Became Not Only The Foremost British Exponent Of That Art But Brought About Its Revival In England. His Strenuous Efforts And Perseverance Aided By The Secretarial Ability Of Sir Wr Drake Resulted In The Foundation Of The Royal Society Of Painter-Etchers And Engravers. As President He Ruled The Society With A Strong Hand From Its First Beginnings In 1880. Notwithstanding His Study Of The Old Masters Of His Art Haden's Own Plates Were Very Individual. He Preferred To Work Directly Onto The Plate In Front Of The Subject. Malcolm Salaman Wrote Of Haden Drawing From Nature "With That Breadth Freedom And Spontaneity Of Effect Which While Suggesting A Sketch Represented A True Etcher's Drawing. Even When Working From A Picture By Another Artist His Personality Dominates The Plate As For Example In The Large Plate He Etched After J.M.W. Turner's Calais Pier Which Is A Classical Example Of What Interpretative Work Can Do In Black And White. Of His Original Plates More Than 250 In Number One Of The Most Notable Was The Large Breaking Up Of The Agamemnon. Haden's Studies Of Rembrandt Besides Influencing His Original Work Led To His Important Monograph On The Dutch Artist's Etchings. Through Books And Lectures And With The Aid Of An Exhibition At The Burlington Fine Arts Club In 1877 He Tried To Give A True Reflection Of Rembrandt's Work Excluding From His Oeuvre A Large Number Of Plates Previously Attributed To Him. Haden's Reasons Were Founded Upon The Results Of A Study Of The Master's Works In Chronological Order And Are Clearly Expressed In His Monograph The Etched Work Of Rembrandt Critically Reconsidered Privately Printed In 1877 And In The Etched Work Of Rembrandt: True And False1895.
