Oversized sheet music 1st edn slight darkening along edges and a few small closed tears inner taping for strength writing at lower corner by Shattuck mild spotting but excellent overall copy racist artwork of happy go lucky Black group playing music before a cabin at moonlight on cover by A. W. Barbelle prolific artist designer for sheet music at the time 4pps one of 27 tunes from Berlin's first Broadway musical in 1914. Received little notice then now ignored for its ugly lyrics that included "Darkies harmonize.happiest of races bow-legged coons." It has been impossible to determine her exact relationship to this song or to the musical itself. Popular at the time perhaps it was a way to popularize and attempt to profit from a rather unimportant Berlin song. Insert photo of vaudeville singer Truly Shattuck who made her first New York vaudeville appearance at Tony Pastor�s theater in 1896. She went on to tour for a number of seasons as a lead performer in several traveling burlesque and vaudeville companies and performed widely from vaudeville to Broadway at the Aerial Gardens now the New Amsterdam Roof Broadway Theatre Lyric Theatre and Casino Theatre. In 1914 which is when this song appeared she somehow also began an extensive European tour performing at music halls in St. Petersburg Vienna Berlin Dresden Hamburg Frankfort and London .In 1910 Shattuck declared bankruptcy in a New York court with nearly $2800 liabilities and no assets. It was reported in the press at the time that her extravagant lifestyle expensive cars clothes and a yacht caused her downfall.Her husband Stephen A. Douglas claimed that she went through a half-million dollars in four years. On October 13 1911 she was rushed to Johns Hopkins Hospital suffering from a brain abscess. She returned to vaudeville in 1913 and turned to Hollywood in 1915 and over the next twelve years would appear in some sixteen silent films. Waterson-Berlin-Snyder hardcover
