‎First appearance of Chancourtois's historical paper in which he conceived a way to arrange the chemical elements in a periodic manner, years before Mendelejeff and Lothar Meyer. He arranged the elements on a cylinder in the order of atomic weight. This importent paper was never published in full, but only as abstracts as offered here. His principle of the periodicity of the elements remained unnoticed until the first communication (of April 7) was translated by P.J. Hartog in Nature in 1889 under the title ""A Foreshadowing of the periodic law"".""Generalizing further from Élie’s ideas, Béguyer formulated a method for classifying chemical elements based ""in the last analysis upon the distribution of these elements in the crust of the globe."" His scheme, a precursor of the periodic table, was put forth in ""Vis tellurique, classement des corps simples ou radicaux au moyen d’une système de classification helicoïdal et numérique"" (1862). The model for his theory was the ""telluric screw,"" a helical graph wound about a cylinder. The base of the cylinder was divided by sixteen equally spaced points, and the screw thread was similarly divided on each of its turns"" the seventeenth point was on the second turn directly above the first, the eighteenth above the second, and so forth. Each point was supposed to represent the ""characteristic number"" of some element that could be deduced from its physical properties or chemical characteristics. Actually, Béguyer used unit equivalent weights as characteristic numbers, following Prout, who made hydrogen the unit. These weights were derived by measuring the specific heat of each element in a manner suggested by Regnault."" (DSB).Parkinson ""Breakthroughs"" 1862 C.‎

‎First appearance of a milestonepaper in chemistry in which Cailletet describes his invention of the liquedifaction-process of oxygen and 5 other gases - and a classic in Low-Temperature Chemistry.""Cailletet is most famous for his investigations on the compression and liquefaction of gases. At the time there were still six gases that were considered permanen: oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, nitrogen dioxyde, acrbon monooxide, and acetylene. Liquefaction had not been achieved despite the use of what were considered ernomous pressures. At the end of 1877 and the beginning of 1878 Callitet liquefied all these gases shortly before Raoul Pictet, who employed a completely different procedure. Cailletet had, following Andrews, recognized the importence of the critical temperature, above which liquefaction of a gas does not take place. In order to produce the necessary ccoling, he had recourse to expansion, sometimes employing several expansions in a staged process. It was in this manner that he succeeded in liquefying oxygen by beginning with liquid ethylene and passing through the stage of liquid methane.""(DSB III, pp. 11-12). ‎"CALLOT, JACQUES. - THE ""SMALL MISERIES OF WAR""‎

‎Misere de la guerre"" faict Par Iacques Callot. Et mise en Lumiere par Israel Henriet. (Les petites Miseres de la Guerre).‎

‎A Paris, Avec Priuilege de Roy, 1636. Four original etchings by Callot, published by Henriet who added a frontispiece (title) etched by Abrahem Bosse. Comprising frontispiece and 3 etchings (ca. 59 x 120 mm.), numbered 1,2 a. 3 in the plate. All 4 mounted and framed in two (29 x 20 cm.). Mildly brownspotted.‎

‎The ""Small miseries of the War"" was unfinished - there was only published 7 etchings (the 4 first offered here).Callot was one of the first great artists to practise the graphic art exclusively. His innovative series of prints documenting the horrors of War (of which his series ""Les Miseres et les Mal-Heurs De la Guerre"" (Great Miseries of War) is the most famous) greatly influenced the socially conscious artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. For instance its themes and imagery were used as a source by Goya and he is acknowledged as equal to the three great: Dürer, Rembrandt, Goya. It is said that no one ever to such an extent possessed the talent of grouping a large number of figures in a small space, and of representing with two or three bold strokes the expression, action and peculiar features of each individual. ‎First edition of these papers, in which Cartan intruced the concept of ""Torsion"", the main inspiration for Einstein in his searce for a unified field theory. The ECT of gravity is a modification of the General relativity Theory""The Einstein-Cartan theory, also known as the Einstein-Cartan-Sciama-Kibble theory, is a classical theory of gravitation similar to general relativity but relaxing the assumption that the affine connection has vanishing antisymmetric part (torsion tensor), so that the torsion can be coupled to the intrinsic angular momentum (spin) of matter, much in the same way in which the curvature is coupled to the energy and momentum of matter. In fact, the spin of matter in curved spacetime requires that torsion is not constrained to be zero but is a variable in the principle of stationary action. Regarding the metric and torsion tensors as independent variables gives the correct generalization of the conservation law for the total (orbital plus intrinsic) angular momentum to the presence of the gravitational field. The theory was first proposed by Élie Cartan in 1922 and expounded in the following few years. Dennis Sciama and Tom Kibble independently revisited the theory in the 1960s, and an important review was published in 1976. Albert Einstein became affiliated with the theory in 1928 during his unsuccessful attempt to match torsion to the electromagnetic field tensor as part of a unified field theory. This line of thought led him to the related but different theory of teleparallelism."" (Wikipedia).‎

‎First appearance of this outstanding contribution to mathematics, announcing his invention and developments of the ALGEBRA OF MATRICES, what is now called the Cayley-Hamilton theorem for square matrices of any order. ""The subject originated in a memoir of 1858 (the paper offered) and grew directly out of simple observations on the way in which the transformations (linear) of the theory of algebraic invariants are combined...a distinctive feature of these rules is that multiplication is not commutative...we get different results according to the order in which we do the multiplication... (it) seems about as far from anything of scientific or practical use as anything could possible be. Yet sixty seven years after Cayley's invented it, HEISENBERG in 1925 recognized in the algebra of matrices exactly the tool which he neede for his revolutionary work in QUANTUM MECHANICS.""(Bell, Men of Mathematics).""It was in connection with the study of invariants under linear transformation that Cayley first introduced matrices to simplify the notation involved. Here he gave some basic notions. This was followed by his first major paper on the subject ""A Memoir on the Theory of Matrices."", the paper offered here. (Kline, Mathematical Thought...p. 806).‎

‎Fitrst appearance of Cayley's famous paper on the Four-Colour-Problem""The four-colour map problem (to prove that on any map only four colours are needed to separate countries) is celebrated in mathematics. It resisted the attempts of able mathematicians for over a century and when it was successfully proved in 1976 the ‘computer proof’ was controversial: it did not allow scrutiny in the conventional way. At the height of his influence in 1878, Arthur Cayley had drawn attention to the problem at a meeting of the London Mathematical Society and it was duly ‘announced’ in print. (the paper offered). He made a short contribution himself and he encouraged the young A. B. Kempe to publish a paper on the subject. Though ultimately unsuccessful, the work of Cayley and Kempe in the late 1870s brought valuable insights..... Francis Galton is revealed as the ‘go-between’ in suggesting Cayley publish his observations in Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society."" (Tony Crilly). The Four-Colour-Theorem was proved in 1976 by Kenneth Appel and Wolfgang Haken. It was the first major mathematical theorem to be proved using a computer.‎

According to Pais, this is THE FIRST PUBLISHED STATEMENT ABOUT THE EXISTENCE OF A STRONG NUCLEAR FORCE. This 'new force' interpretation was disputed untill well into 1920s.""(Hey & Walters).""In any event, Chadwick and Bieler's final conclusion avoid all reference to a possible electromagnetic cause for the deviations from the simple theory: ""The present experiments do not seem to throw any light on the nature of the law of variation of the forces at the seat of an electric charge, but merely show that the forces are of very great intensity... It is our task to find some field of force which will reproduce these effects."" Chasles presented these letters to the Academy in 1867 and took an active part in the furor that ensued (1867-1869), vigorously defending the genuineness of the letters. ""Christie’s paper ""Experimental Determination of the Laws of Magneto-electric Induction"" was the Bakerian lecture for 1833. In it Christie showed that ""the conducting power, varies as the squares of [the wires’] diameters directly, and as their lengths inversely."" He also concluded that voltaelectricity, thermoelectricity, and magnetoelectricity are all conducted according to the same law, which lent further support to the theory that all these electricities are identical. ‎First appearance of this extremely importent paper in which Clairaut directly confirms the rotation and the orbital movement of the Earth around the Sun, and giving an indirect proof of the axiom, that the velocity of light does not depend on whether the light source moves away or toward the observer. The Earth does move after all !!In 1728 James Bradley, trying to measure the stellar parallax, discovered stellar aberration - the angular displacement of the apparent direction of starlight due to the earth's motion - and attributed it to the combined effect of the finite velocity of light and the earth's orbital velocity. But Bradley had not given any theoretical proof, but Clairaut did in the offered paper.Aberration is ""the apparent change in direction of a source of light caused by an observers component of motion perpendicular to the impinging rays. During this time the telescope has moved a short distance, causing the photons to reach a spot on the focal plane, displayed from the former image position... This discovery provided the first direct physical confirmation of the Copernican theory. A second importent application of aberration has been its clear-cut demonstration that, as is axiomatic to special relativity, light reaching the earth has a velocity unaffected by the relative motion of the source toward or away from earth.""(McGraw-Hill ""Concise Encyclopedia..."").‎

‎First appearance of the paper in which Clausius makes importent contributions to the generalization and understanding of the Second Law of Thermodynamics by introducing the concept of disgregation and proving the equivalence of the transformation of heat.""Clausius began that search for understanding in 1862 by introducing the concept of disgregation, a concept that, he said, was based on an idea he had long held: that the force of heat for performing mechanical work (both internal and external together) was proportional to the absolute temperature.13 Clausius had never stated this idea explicitly before, although he had argued in 1853, by adopting an analogy between a reversible steam engine and a thermocouple, that the potential difference at a thermocouple junction should be proportional to the absolute temperature. In any event, he now wished to assert that the work which can be done by heat in any change of the arrangement of a body is proportional to the absolute temperature multiplied by a function of molecular arrangement, the disgregation Z. Given this assumption and his postulate that the heat in a body H was only a function of temperature, he was able (1) to prove his theorem of the equivalence of transformations and (2) to separate the equivalence function (entropy) into a temperature-dependent term and a configurational-dependent term...""(DSB).The issue contains other notable papers, Plücker ""Ueber recurrente Ströme und ihre Anwendung zur Darstellung von Gasspectra"", pp. 27-54, Tyndall ""Ueber Strahlung und Absorption der Wärme durch gasförmige Materie"", pp. 1-27.‎

‎First appearance of Clausius first paper on electrodynamics in which he replaced Weber's Law with another that would not give an unwanted force between charge and current.""Clausius’ major effort in mathematical physics after 1875 involved his quest for an adequate electrodynamic theory. He spelled out the fundamental tenets to his approach in 1875: (Weber’s law was incorrect for the case where only one kind of electricity is assumed to move, since the equation entails that a current exert a force on a charge at rest" (2) a revision would be possible if one assumed that the electrodynamic action occurred via an intervening medium, for then electric particles that are not moving relative to each other (moving at equal velocities) could still exert forces on one another by virtue of their absolute motion in the medium" forces should not be restricted to the line joining two charges. In 1876 Clausius simplified the equation he had previously proposed by subjecting it to the condition of the conservation of energy. In doing so, however, he ignored the possibility that energy changes might occur in the intervening medium.""(DSB).‎

His reply to Clausius contains very importent additons to his conservation law, as it clarifies his use of the concepts of ""energy"", ""vis viva"", ""electrical tension"" , ""potentials"" etc.Helmholtz famous work Über die Erhaltung der Kraft"" from 1847 gave the first comprehensive statement of the first law of thermodynamics: All modes of energy, heat, light, electricity, and all chemical phenomena, are capable of transformation from one to the other but are indestructible and cannot be created. Clausius (in the papers offere) critized helmholtz on his theory of heat over the consistency of the physical interpretation and of the use mathematics. He argued that Helmholtz's demonstration of his conservation law was valid only for Helmholtz's particulat model of matter, and that he had not understood the notion of the potential. This criticism lead Helmholtz expand and clarify the central concepts of physics, importent steps in the history of theoretical physics.‎

This principle paints a dramatic picture of the end of the world, the so-called ""heath-death of the universe"".""Entropy, on the other hand, of the complementary experience of water seeking its own level, of hot bodies cooling, of springs untensing, of magnetism wearing off and electrical charges leaking away, of a destiny suchThat no life lives forever" - That dead men rise up never" that even the weariest river Winds somewhere safe to sea: a world getting old and running down.""(Gillespie in ""The edge of Objectivity"" p. 400-01.).""Clausius discovered that if he took the ratio of the heat content of a system and its absolute temperature, this ration would always increase in any process taken place in a closed system. (A closed system is one that loses no energy to the outside world and gains no energy from it.) With perfect efficiency, which is never realized in the real world, of course, the ratio would remain constant, but i would never, under any circumstances, decrease.""(Asimov). - Parkinson: Breakthroughs 1854 C.‎

Krupp). In ""Annalen der Physik und Chemie"", Dritte Reihe, 19. Band (79. Band der ganzen Reihe). IX,(1),580 pp. and 3 folded engraved plates. (Entire volume offered). Endpapers and the first and last few leaves with brownspots. Clausius's paper: pp. 368-397 a. pp. 500-524. Internally clean.‎

‎First edition of this monumental, famous paper in thermodynamics in which Clausius for the first time states the Second Law of Thermodynamics, one of the most importent laws of Nature having a huge impact on the development of physical theory, cosmology, communications and information theory. The law states that a) the energy of the Universe is constant, and b) the Entropy of the Universe tends to a maximum.""Clausius' contribution to thermostatics is comparable to those of Newton and Maxwell to mechanics and electromagnetism, respectively. In the obituary J.W. Gibbs remarked that Clausiu's first memoir ""marks an epoch in the history of physics....."""" (Chowdhury and Stauffer in ""Principles of Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics"").In ""The Nature of the Physical World"" Eddington writes: ""The Law that entropy increases - the Second Law of Thermodynamics - holds, I think, the supreme position among the laws of Nature. If someone points out to you that your pet theory of the Universe is in disagreement with Maxwell's equations - then so much the worse for Maxwell's equations. If it is found to be contradicted by observation - well, these experimentalists do bungle things sometimes. But if your theory is found to be against the Second Law of Thermodynamics I can give You no hope"" there is nothing for it but to collapse in deepest humiliation."".Parkinson ""Breakthroughs"", 1850 P.‎
