Grushkin 505-506. King 105-206. These postcards are all the first King variants except for two as noted in our list of them. Family Dog would mail these postcards to their mailing list to alert them of new shows coming to town. These postcards are not the ones that were printed for bulk mail rate. Corresponding posters were printed at the same time as the postcards to be hung up at places around town that would alert people to the latest concert news. Every postcard is a striking example of the psychedelic aesthetic. Two postcards with a tiny abrasion overall a beautiful set. Family Dog Productions [1967] [1968] unknown‎

‎[FASCINATING MAGAZINE ISSUE ON THE GREAT WHITE FLEET'S VISIT TO JAPAN IN 1908].‎

‎風俗画報. 米艦歓迎紀念号. Fūzoku gahō. Beikan kangei kinengō. Fuzoku Gaho Illustrated Magazine of Japanese Culture. Special Commemorative Issue on the Arrival of the US Great White Fleet.‎

‎東京. Tokyo.: 東陽堂. Tōyōdō. Meiji 41 1908. Four double page colour plates a double page and a full page illustration in green ink black and white photographic illustrations. 25.5 x 18.5cm illustrations 23pp text: 50 13 36pp captions and text in Japanese and English. Original colour illustrated wrappers. Text evenly browned upper wrapper and first leaves a little insect damaged but still a very attractive souvenir issue. This fascinating magazine special issue was published to commemorate the Atlantic Fleet's the Great White Fleet visit to Japan in October 1908. The issue was published in November 1908 and reports all the activities of welcoming the fleet in Yokohama. Fuzoku Gaho was the first illustrated magazine which covered Japanese culture and was published between between 1889 and 1916. This special issue shows the enthusiasm Japanese government and the public displayed to the visiting US naval officers and sailors.

The US Atlantic Fleet which consisted with 16 war ships went around the world between 1908 and 1909. As the ships were painted in white the fleet was also known as the Great White Fleet. In Japan they were called white ships 白船 in contrast to the black ships of Matthew Perry. This US naval exercise was to show off the American naval power to the world particularly in the Pacific after the Russo-Japanese War. The Japanese government decided to invite the fleet to Japan and welcome the ships with heightened enthusiasm. The contemporary social atmosphere and details of numerous events are covered extensively in this issue. Text is both in Japanese and English. The issue includes some pages of cartoon illustrations of American sailors on shore leave in Yokohama. With a title of "Jackass in Yokohama" and "U.S Jackies on the Spree" the sailors' experiences in Yokohama are illustrated with humour. . 東陽堂. [Tōyōdō]. unknown‎

XII. .Colophon: Antwerp Michael Hillen van Hoochstraten 1523. Three rare editions of humanist works in a contemporary panel-stamped binding all well produced and the panel stamps finely rendered. Fogelmark p. 33 calls panel-stamps with gothic animals in foliage "the Flemish panel stamp par préférence". We have not found an exact match in the literature. The impressions of the panels are very crisp and clear especially that on the lower half of the front board.Ad 1: First Basel edition of an account of the sacerdotium priesthood and administration in ancient Rome written by the Florentine humanist Andrea Domenico Fiocco d. 1452 assuming the name of a first century Roman writer Lucius Fenestella. It is followed by a work on the same subject by the Italian humanist Giulio Pomponio Leto 1428-1498 and a list of abbreviations by Valerius Probus. While these works by Fiocco and Leto had been published together since 1510 the present edition introduces a new form that seems to have become the standard followed by others.Ad 2: Rare Antwerp edition of satirical dialogues by the 2nd-century rhetorician Lucianus of Samosata now in Turkey near the Syrian border often simply called Lucian in English. They come from his Dialogues of the gods and Dialogues of the dead. The present translation from the Greek by Erasmus first appeared at Louvain in 1512. Only one other copy of the present edition is known.Ad 3: Rare early Antwerp edition of a very popular pedagogical work by the German humanist and professor at Leipzig Peter Schade better known as Petrus Mosellanus 1493-1524. The present edition includes as usual the dialogues for children by the German Hellenist Christoph Hegendorf 1500-1540. Only one other copy of the present edition is known. With several early owners' and other inscriptions and an occasional manuscript note or underlining in the text. The title page of ad 1 with an owner's inscription removed and about a millimetre shaved from the fore-edge of the woodcut border a small worm hole in the first 5 leaves and some mostly marginal water stains not significant outside the last 8 leaves: still in good condition. ‎True and Tried Recipes. Collected by The Ladies of the Baptist Church Lafayette Ala‎

‎Lafayette Ala: The Church 1921. Octavo 22.5 x 15 cm. 44 xvi pages. Advertisements. Title from cover. Evident FIRST EDITION. A church cookbook with more than 250 recipes many attributed. Most entries adhere to the reliable conventions promised by the title but there are also such glimpses of the geography as Pecan Cake requiring two and a quarter pounds of pecans a custardy Burnt Almond Cream Banana Fritters and Squash Cakes. ~ Though not the earliest congregations in Alabama the so-called Primitive Baptists – the “church of the people†who eschewed hierarchy and claimed personal experience of the spirit as ultimate authority – dominated among the Christian communities by the middle of the nineteenth century. Since the decade when True and Tried Recipes appeared the First Baptist Church of Lafayette in Chambers County a stone’s throw from the Georgia border has been remembered as a bastion of the Southern Convention the spiritual home of several Alabamians who served as representatives of their state in Washington not the least of whom was Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black 1886-1971. ~ Stapled in brown wrappers titled in black. ‎[First Church (Newbury, Mass). Ladies' Benevolent Society of the Oldtown Parish]‎

‎Ye Olde Newbury Cook Book. Published in the Interests of the Ladies' Benevolent Society‎

‎Newburyport: Newburyport Commercial Press 1927. Small octavo 19 x 12.5 cm. 58 i pages. Advertisements interspersed. Title from cover. Additional title page 1: Tested Tried and True. "This book is issued for the benefit of the Ladies' Benevolent Society of the Oldtown Parish First Church Newbury"–page 1. ~ FIRST EDITION. A church collection with nearly two hundred recipes the majority attributed. The family of the pastor Charles Sumner Holton 1866-1939 was not reticent: Parson Holton's Baked Beans; Cusque à la crème submitted by Nina Holton; Madame Holton's Ginger Snaps; Chocolate Cookies submitted by Mrs. Chas. S. Holton. Reverend Holton started his tenure in May 1897; Ye Olde Newbury Cook Book may reasonably be assumed to celebrate his thirtieth anniversary. ~ Four parish meetinghouses stood in Newbury by the end of the seventeenth century under the care of clergy in the orbit of Harvard who preached an understanding of doctrine that would eventually become recognized as Unitarianism. The town itself was first organized as First Parish of Newbury its first meeting house planted on the lower green in Oldtown. A second replaced it in 1647 now located on the upper green followed in turn by a third and a fourth until a permanent structure of stone was erected in 1806 on High Road some two miles north. A disastrous fire challenged the achievement called "permanent" in 1868 but the congregation not only regrouped and rebuilt but also nurtured its own school. In ensuing years Unitarian theology suffered the inevitable wounds of conservative defection; in 1967 the First Parish Church of Newbury realigned with the relatively newly instantiated United Church of Christ. ~ Stapled in green paper wrappers with black and red decoration. Very good. Scarce. OCLC locates three copies; whether or not there is a connection of this title to an Old Newbury Cook Book published by the Ladies' Benevolent Society in 1909 one copy reported in OCLC; Cook page 125; Brown 1353 has not been determined; in neither Brown nor Cagle. ‎[First Methodist Church (Somerville, Mass); Ladies of the Church]‎

‎Peoples' Receipt Book and Church Directory 1879. Compiled by the Ladies of the First M. E. Church‎

‎Somerville; Boston: The Church; Printed by F. J. Barnard 1879. Octavo 23.75 x 15 cm. 54 pages. Advertisements some illustrated. Title from cover. Author from prefatory note "With Our Readers" on page 3. Printer from advertisement on page 54. Alternate title within prefatory note: Peoples' Receipt Book and Business Directory. Evident FIRST EDITION. A charitable cookbook that foregrounds local business advertisements rather than recipes as a "directory" – a misleading usage however as there is no alphabetical or thematic arrangement. In addition a fair-related fundraiser the "benevolent purpose" for which is made obligingly clear: "The ladies of the First M. E. Church in Somerville propose to hold a Grand Church Bazaar in the church corner of Bow and Summer Streets October 27-31 and this book is to assist their enterprise in several ways" page 3. With approximately two hundred unattributed recipes and household hints including: Rye Muffins Graham Puffs Green Corn Soup Fried Halibut Stewed Lobster Mutton Pie Roast Turkey Beet Salad Cabbage Salad Stuffed Potatoes Baked Squash Boiled Turnips Corn Fritters Cocoanut Pudding Citron Pudding Roly-Poly Pudding Ribbon Cake Charlotte Russe Pie Lemon Pie seven versions Apple Trifle. A specific statement appears to underlie a recipe for Muffins Without Saleratus: neither a yeast-leavened bakery or "English" muffin nor a chemically leavened quick-bread muffin. Oddly cleaning and other recommendations – Liquid Glue Ant Trap Arresting Fermentation Removing Freckles – are interspersed among the culinary recipes. ~ Somerville was known to European chiefly British settlers primarily as a concatenation of small farms and grazing commons until the middle of the nineteenth century. Congregationalists Baptists and Methodists established congregations shortly after the coalescence of a town in 1842. The original First Methodist Episcopal Church stood on Western Avenue by 1859 its cornerstone laid in October of the year before: "News and Miscellaneous" New England Farmer Boston 13 no. 41 9 October 1858 page 2. But a second house of worship was in service by 1876 located near Union Square "A Splendid Entertainment" The Boston Globe 10 no. 105 1 November 1876 page 8. Sometimes called the Union Square Methodist Church it is this building a fortress-like brick edifice at the "corner of Bow and Summer Streets" that was supported by the ladies who organized the Peoples' Receipt Book and Church Directory. ~ The eventual chronicler of First Methodist's rise and fall will have documents to work with now housed in the archives of Boston University's School of Theology Library. The congregation joined the 1968 merger of Evangelical Brethren and the Methodist Church and adopted the name First United Methodist Church of Somerville but dwindled in number over the next decade. The building was placed on the market at the end of the 1970s and the property transferred to a commercial developer. In the 1990s the deconsecrated church was converted to condominium apartments. ~ Some age-toning and edge-wear; bright otherwise. ‎[First Presbyterian Church (Salinas, Calif); Ladies of the Church]‎

‎The Twentieth Century Cook Book. By California Caterers and Teachers of Cookery in Connection with the Ladies of the First Presbyterian Church‎

‎Salinas California: The Church; Printed by E. H. Green Printer 1902. Octavo 23 x 15 cm. 382 x pages. “Index†is actually a table of contents. Advertisements. Cover title: 20th Century Cook Book. Evident FIRST EDITION. A church cookbook with approximately four hundred recipes from a region famous for its root and vine vegetables its farm produce as well as its long-established Mexican and Asian communities. Among items of note: a pureed Artichoke Soup; a flaming Rum Omelet; and Carne Abodaba with chilis and pork ribs hung “outdoors to dry four or five hours if weather is warm.†On a separate note when serving Chinese appetizers the watermelon seeds “should be rubbed in a silk cloth.†~ The Monterey area saw some of the earliest Presbyterian ministries in California. A congregation is thought to have formed in the watery region called Salinas “salt marsh†as early as 1873 – a year even before a town taking the name was incorporated – though whether it endured continuously is unclear. The era was one of vertiginous change the marshlands being drained with the aid of Japanese and Mexican immigrant labor and a town rising around a vast sugar processing plant supporting its own factory community. A church building however is documented on Main Street not very much before The Twentieth Century Cook Book saw light of day. ~ A satisfactory account of community life in Salinas Presbyterian or otherwise has yet to appear; nor is much known of individual food suppliers and itinerant teachers of cookery who collaborated with the Ladies of the congregation in so substantial an effort here. 1902 is coincidentally the year Salinas’s most celebrated if controversial son John Steinbeck was born – in the so-called Connor House four doors down from the Main Street Church. Today the historic name First Presbyterian is suppressed in deference to an entity called Compass Church a commercial evangelical offshoot that has broken with ecumenical Presbyterianism. ~ Some staining throughout; isolated corrections in ink. In limp pebbled maroon cloth with gilt lettering. Near very good. OCLC locates eight copies; not in Brown Cagle or Cook. [The Church; Printed by] E. H. Green, Printer hardcover‎

‎[Flavius Claudius Iulianus Augustus / Julian the Apostate] Vidal, Gore‎

‎Julian.‎

‎1965. London The Reprint Society 1965. 13 x 19 cm. VII 480 pages. Original Hardcover with dustjacket in protective Mylar. Besides osme minor signs of foxing to the edge in very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Julian Latin: Flavius Claudius Iulianus Augustusa; also known as Julian the Apostate was Roman Emperor from 361 to 363 as well as a notable philosopher and author in Greek. A member of the Constantinian dynasty Julian became Caesar over the western provinces by order of Constantius II in 355 and in this role campaigned successfully against the Alamanni and Franks. Most notable was his crushing victory over the Alamanni in 357 at the Battle of Argentoratum Strasbourg leading his 13000 men against a Germanic army three times larger. In 360 in Lutetia Paris he was proclaimed Augustus by his soldiers sparking a civil war between Julian and Constantius. Before the two could face each other in battle however Constantius died after naming Julian as his rightful successor. In 363 Julian embarked on an ambitious campaign against the Sassanid Empire. Though initially successful Julian was mortally wounded in battle and died shortly thereafter. Julian was a man of unusually complex character: he was "the military commander the theosophist the social reformer and the man of letters". He was the last non-Christian ruler of the Roman Empire and it was his desire to bring the Empire back to its ancient Roman values in order to as he saw it save it from dissolution. He purged the top-heavy state bureaucracy and attempted to revive traditional Roman religious practices at the expense of Christianity. His anti-Christian sentiment and promotion of Neoplatonic paganism caused him to be remembered as Julian the Apostate by the church. Ironically he was the last emperor of the Constantinian dynasty which was the empire's first Christian dynasty. Wikipedia hardcover‎

The recipes are signed by their contributors and accompanied by charming illustrations. Even the display advertisements are attractively hand-lettered. The misguided covers were intended to be an Art-Deco triumph of metallic sheen: Instead they flopped displaying an austere industrial aesthetic.
Linley Heflin continues to provide scholarships for Alabama women to attend Alabama colleges. Despite all their good intentions it's been suggested that recipes contributed by member's of Southern women's clubs are actually the toothsome creations of their African-American domestic help. ‎[Foyles Literary Luncheon for Sir Angus Wilson, 1980] 'Dolly' [Mrs A G Dowdeswell, Secretary, The Johnson Society of London] [Ph‎

‎Foyles Literary Luncheon for Sir Angus Wilson 1980. Autograph Letter Signed from ‘Dolly’ Mrs A. G. Dowdeswell to ‘Philip’ Philip Dosse of ‘Books and Bookmen’ with reference to Wilson Melvyn Bragg Simon Young of John Murray Ian Jack.‎

‎27 August 1980; on letterhead of 26 High Street Biddenden Kent. See the entries for Angus Wilson and Christina Foyle in the Oxford DNB. ‘Dolly’ is clearly the ‘Mrs. A. G. Dowdeswell’ who was secretary of the Johnson Society of London in the 70s and 80s arranging luncheons and named as a member of the Johnson Society at least as late as 1992. The recipient Philip Dosse was proprietor of Hansom Books publisher of a stable of seven arts magazines including Books and Bookmen and Plays and Players. See ‘Death of a Bookman’ by the novelist Sally Emerson editor of ‘Books and Bookmen’ at the time of Dosse’s suicide in Standpoint magazine October 2018. The present item is 2pp 4to. Forty-seven lines of text. In good condition lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Possibly related the pair were at least on a level of intimacy. Addressed to ‘My dear Philip’ and signed ‘With love / Dolly.’ She reminds him that she ‘sat next to Simon Young of John Murray at the b & b Dorchester luncheon’ for the twenty-fifth anniversary of ‘Books and Bookmen’ and that ‘he indicated that he was desirous of doing some more reviewing’. She lists five of his interests adding ‘a little nebulous but he is apparently quite a bod at John Murray 493 4361 and has been masterminding series on flying and sailing there for many years. I went round the drawing rooms and saw the Byron relics in Albemarle Street last week. He is very pleasant.’ She was present at ‘the next Literary Luncheon for Sir Angus Wilson last week. It was a success and Angus was in good form and pleased with both honours. After luncheon a better one he suddenly dashed round the end of the top table and made a dive for me. He had an animated conversation for quite a few minutes while Melvyn Bragg was waiting to kick off. He didn’t dive for anyone else and my table 8 were over-awed so I was told. My husband and I have known him for thirty years or so. We never pushed our knowledge of him but he has always called himself a friend and on many occasions has made a point of deliberately seeking us out. I must tell you that the room was not half so full as for your 25th anniversary. I think his new novel not his best.’ She has been in London for five days and names an eye surgeon she wished to consult ‘but six weeks must elapse before he can see me so I shall try to fix it for the time of my Lichfield visit’. She is glad Dosse has got Ian Jack to review ‘Dictionary Johnson’. ‘I wonder if you have had a copy of Johnson’s Dictionary a £45 facsimile from Times Books Ltd I am also pleased that Lady Huntingdon will do C. H. Rolph’s “London Particulars†and Nigel Nicolson is in good form.’ 27 August 1980; on letterhead of 26 High Street, Biddenden, Kent. unknown‎

‎Frederick Gorringe's Department Store. Manuscript subscription list of donations by staff to the Daily Telegraph fund for 'the Sufferers' by the Edgware Road Fire giving more than 200 names and sums. With two press cuttings.‎

‎London. May and June 1888. 4pp. foolscap 8vo. Bifolium. In fair condition on aged paper. First page headed: 'The Edgware Road Fire The proprietor of "The Daily Telegraph" have as hitherto on similar occasions opened a Subscription list for the Sufferers and it is estimated that £3000 will be required to meeet the urgent claims for relief which are already too well known I shall be glad to receive any donations you may be pleased to give on their behalf JNER.'. Arranged in eight columns two to a page with running totals and a grand total of £16 1s 0d. The first donation is for 10s 6d from 'Mr. Kynock' and the last for 1s from Mr Catliffe'. Accompanying the list are two newspaper cuttings laid down on one side of a piece of 12mo paper with manuscript heading The Edgware Rd. Fire Fund'. The first cutting records the donation of £20 by 'Fredk. Gorring Buckingham Palace-road' and of £16 1s 0d by 'Employés of Fredk. Gorringe'; the second cutting reproduces a letter from Gorringe reading: 'TO THE EDITOR OF "THE DAILY TELEGRAPH." SIR - I have pleasure in sending a cheque for £20 towards the fund being raised for the assistants who are sufferers by the Edgware-road fire; also one for £16 1s from my employés. - Yours faithfully FREDK. GORRINGE. Buckingham Palace-road June 5.' The fire had occurred on 30 May 1888 with The Times devoting the following day's editorial to it beginning: 'London has been visited by many greater and more destructive fires but by few more tragic and pathetic in their circumstances than that which occurred in the Edgware-road shortly after six o'clock yesterday morning. The large drapery establishment of Messrs. GARROULD occupying the angle formed by the Edgware-road and Queen-street was suddenly attacked by fire and five of the young assistants who slept in the upper floors were burnt to death or suffocated while five more were seriously scorched or injured by jumping from the windows.' The Times drew parallels with another fire eight months before at the Exeter Theatre and concluded that it had 'once more taught Londoners the lesson that they cannot have efficient protection from fire without paying for it'. Lacking the front wrapper; rear wrapper is detached but present; even toning throughout; small rust stains to a couple leaves from a metal paper clip.

Freedom of the press and the ever difficult question of attendant libel/slander are the background and the topics of this publication. Gómez Farías the son of Valentín Gómez Farías and a savvy economist and politician said in an editorial that the commercial firm of Barron Forbes & Cia. was in "a cozy deal" with authorities in Tepic; the firm and its principals thought themselves slandered and took the matter to the courts; Gómez Farías was taken to trial. Presented here is Gómez Farías' side of things in a very uneditorialized manner. Sutro 908. José Mariano Fernandez de Lara unknown‎
