‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original cloth bdg. 4to. (26 x 19 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic letters). [4], 1422, [2] p. Text block separated in two columns. Fading title gilt lettering on spine, otherwise a very good copy. Scarce bible in Ottoman Turkish, printed by one of the most famous Armenian printers and published by the English & American Bible Societies in Turkey during the second half of the 19th century. Arshag Hagop Boyajian, (1837-1914), was an Ottoman Armenian printer and a leader of the Armenian Protestant community in the Ottoman Empire. He was born in Diyarbakir and educated at Robert College in Istanbul. During the Crimean War (1853-1856), he served as a translator at the headquarters of the British army in Üsküdar (Scutari), on Istanbul's Asian shore. It is woodblock printed by hand on hand-made Chinese mulberry paper. The image is 24.5 x 58.5 cm. mounted as a scroll with silk brocade mountings beautifully executed. . The work illustrates the most important acupuncture and acupressure "Qi" "points" eight veins in 12 channels. . The diagram shows a man and the locations of each of these "meridians" and pulses and their associated exact "Qi" places to insert the needle for maximum effect. Each of these "Qi" have been hand written using red ink. . The work illustrates a Chinese man with an the Yellow Emperor's Imperial Chinese seal above his head in red cinnabar. By placing the Emperor's Yin Zhang seal at the top of this diagram as something coming from the Yellow Emperor. . It reads: "FROM THE YELLOW EMPEROR'S Huang-DI ANCESTRAL HALL DIAGRAM OF ACUPUNCTURE MERIDIANS." . Per Ecke Volumes I & II: "Each of the meridians has a Chinese medical term. There are punctures where the needle may be pushed in. On the right eight large words Hanzi read: 'Twelve Classica of Marvel Canon On the Eight Channels of interior Pulses.' . Per the above the title woodblock printed in red at the far right reads in Pinyin: SHI ER JIN CHI JIN BAI MAI T'U: TWELVE CLASSICA OF MARVEL CANNON ON THE EIGHT CHANNELS of inferior PULSES." . Zhenjiu Xuewei acupuncture "Qi" energy points are indicated in red while copious other "Qi" or "points" are indicated by black dots where the acupuncture needle should be inserted for maximum therapeutic benefit. . PROVENANCE: The work was acquired by us directly from Prof. Richard C. Rudolph 1909-2003 the late great author professor and scholar of Chinese studies at the University of California Los Angeles. . His typical red cinnabar Yin Zhang chop/seal is found at the lower right corner above which is another unidentified collector's seal. For a photo of his chop please see photograph illus04.jpg posted to our website. . At the left margin are two other Yin Zhang which are identical to those illustrated in Ecke see below. . THE SAME EXAMPLE IS ILLUSTRATED IN ECKE Vols. 1 & 2: . As per Ecke this work was mounted as a hanging scroll the bindings are a green brocade silk of a high quality reminiscent of the Japanese style. . Per Prof. Rudolph he collected this in Chengdu during his 1948-49 book collecting trip throughout China buying books for the University of California. Google him for copious details. . CONDITION: The woodblock print has been expertly preserved in the scroll binding. As usual the scroll is backed with hand-made Washi type mulberry paper green silk front bindings with a think gold brocade cloth strip at the top and bottom in the Japanese style of scroll mounting. . The upper portion of the green silk has a bit of fading but this does not detract from the overall impression of the mounting. The print is flawless in stunning and excellent "collector's condition." . Please review the photographs posted to our website. . SCROLL MOUNTED SIZE: The mounting: 35.7 x 1 meter 13 cm. 113cm. Print sheet: 25.5 x 57.8 cm. The above dimensions differ from the exhibited un-mounted example. . PROVENANCE: Richard C. RUDOLPH 1909-2003: He was an American professor of Chinese Literature and Archaeology at the University of California Los Angeles. . This item was one of a group he purchased on a trip to China 1948-49. . HUANG-TI THE YELLOW EMPEROR 2697-2597 or 2698-2598 BCE: . Huangdi is a "Shen" deity in Chinese religion one of the legendary Chinese sovereigns and culture heroes included among the mytho-historical Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors and cosmological Five Forms of the Highest Deity. First calculated by Jesuit missionaries on the basis of Chinese chronicles and later accepted by the 20th century promoters of a universal calendar starting with the Yellow Emperor Huangdi's traditional reign dates are 2697-2597 or 2698-2598 BCE. . A large number of texts such as the HUANGDI NEIJING a medical classic and the HUANGDI SIJING a group of political treatises were attributed to him. He has been celebrated as China's greatest physician and writer of the classics on Chinese medicine practice and traditional medicine. See Veith below. . Huangdi is credited with numerous inventions and innovations ranging from the Chinese calendar the Yellow Emperor is now regarded as the initiator of Chinese culture and said to be the ancestor of all Chinese. . This collected edition with three titles in one volume is unrecorded by OCLC which does note three holdings of 'The Haunted Chamber' separately printed by this publisher. Irish novelist Margaret Wolfe Hungerford was born in Cork Ireland; her father was Canon Fitzjohn Stannus Hamiltion rector at St. Faughnan's cathedral in Rosscarbery. ‎Hyde Park: Rotten Row in the reign of George IV. Autograph Letter Signed by J. King complaining at length about ‘Patricians’ whose horses trample the grass of the ‘People’s Park’ leaving the place ‘like a Sandy Desert the Verdure all destroyed’.‎

‎‘Cadogan Place. May. 31. 1824’. A nice piece of London ephemera the subject being Rotten Row which runs along the south side of Hyde Park. 2pp 4to. On wove paper with watermark ‘J WILMOT / 1823’. Forty-one lines of text. Having been torn in two vertically presumably by the irate recipient the item has been repaired in an unusual way: with the two pieces sewn back together from top to bottom. Otherwise in fair condition lightly aged and creased with slight loss to one edge from breaking of seal or wafer. Folded for postage. No information is forthcoming about the author of the letter but from the contents he is clearly not a Tory. The matter is one about which he clearly feels strongly and the tone is verging on the obsessive. He begins: ‘Sir / May I without offence be allowed to ask you a Question - for whom is the Expence for the repair of that matchless Ride from Hyde Park. Corner. to Kensington being incurred It cannot be for the Gentlemen who usually ride in the Park for they are now allowed to ride on both sides of the Road on the Grass - most carefully avoiding this Repaired Ride - Now after the handsome Grant that has been made to His Majesty for the Repair of his Castle and Parks certainly some one ought to look after the People’s Parks and a few hundred should be expended in beautifying and improving them. At this Moment the footpath parallel to this Ride is covered with Weeds and Grass the Bank of the Serpentine trodden in by Cows and is in a most filthy state’. He complains that the public money spent on the parks ‘is mostly to pay the Rangers their deputies &c. not for the Improvement of the Place which by a little attention might challenge any Public Row in Europe’. He continues with reference to: ‘Keeping the Horsemen to theh Horseroad’ and ‘Ld. Sydney’ and complains of ‘the Many Right Honbles. . committing this trespass for the next 2 Months for Trespass it certainly is these Patricians have no more right to trample the Grass for 2 mo. than for the public in general have for the other 10 - Lord Northumberland is the person the Public understand to whom they are most indebted for this unkindness but it certainly neither shews taste nor feeling in his Lordship that because his horse may have a soft place for his feet the Dear little Children with their attendants are to be expelled from this favorite Spot during the most pleasant time in the Year’. After the two months ‘his Lordship and his Companions’ will retire leaving the place ‘like a Sandy Desert the Verdure all destroyed’: they are ‘permitted to deface the People’s Park and they go to their ow where a Sheep is scarcely permitted to crop their pleasure grounds’. He suggests the erection of ‘a rail running on both sides of the Road from H. P. C. to Kensington so as to exclude the Horsemen from trampling the grass’. The church-like building in the distance is the ‘Ridderzaal’ the Knights’ Hall. This building is used for ceremonial gatherings like the joint session of Parliament. In front of the ‘Ridderzaal’ the French church. This building was demolished in 1879. On the square in front of the building people and carriages. Recent marbled paper over boards by the Geneva bookbinder Jean-Luc Honegger b. 1953 who set up his atelier ca. 1978 signed with his “honegger” stamp in blue ink at the foot of the back paste-down sewn on 3 recessed supports the marbled paper in an antique spot pattern see Wolfe 162-163 with black spots on unusually fine-grained grey Stormont spots and with veins in red turquoise orange dark blue and white black morocco spine label with the title in gold roman capitals reading up the spine. Small Chancery 4to 20.5 x 14.5 cm. With a large woodcut 10.0 x 8.8 cm on the title page: depicting a teacher Pope Gregory the Great ca. 600 CE declared a saint in 1295 with a dove on his shoulder his attribute seated behind a lectern with an open book instructing two of his pupils seated before him each with a book in his hands with above them a scroll inscribed “Accipies tanti doctoris dogmata sancti”. Set in a single column with 36 lines to the page in a rotunda gothic type Quentell type 7 here 79G though in the Typenrepertorium 80G with a larger textura gothic for the first line of the title Quentell type 10 155G though the only capital in that line is the 8 mm lombardic initial S Quentell initials e described as 6/7 mm but noting that they are used with type 10. With spaces left for manuscript initials 1 6-line and many 3-line a few - mostly on b1v and b2r - with manuscript guide letters in black ink. Most pages with a few words underscored in black ink. Quentell’s second quarto edition of the well-known manual on the art of dying in the original Latin matching his ca. 1493 quarto edition almost line for line and using the same woodcut quite different from any used with this text before that date. Quentell’s quarto editions contain the original long version of the text known as Speculum artis bene moriendi often attributed to Matthaeus de Cracovia or Albertus Magnus editions in Italian are often attributed to Dominicus de Capranica Cardinal of Fermo. The Ars moriendi was one of the earliest incunabula printed and consists of two related Latin texts written around 1415 and 1450 offering guidance on how to have a good death according to Christian beliefs of the late Middle Ages. The texts were written in response to the Black Death and social upheavals of the 15th century with the earliest versions likely composed in southern Germany. The highly popular Ars moriendi was translated into many West European languages and was the first in a tradition of guides to death and dying. The first edition in the original Latin appeared ca. 1474 but was preceded by a German edition in 1473 and perhaps by an edition in Italian described as ca. 1471/75. Quentell published the Latin text together with other works in a folio edition described as ca. 1484/89 but he published four quarto editions of the Ars moriendi alone described as ca. 1493 the present ca. 1495 ca. 1498 and another probably after 1500. He published no Ars moriendi editions in vernacular languages. His first three quarto editions have the same collation but the present edition matches the ca. 1493 edition almost line for line and uses the same woodcut while the ca. 1498 edition differs considerably and uses a different woodcut.Heinrich Quentell one of the greatest early Cologne printer-publishers issued many theological and philosophical texts for university use but also liturgical texts working both alone and with Johann Helman who may have also jointly employed contract printers and dispatched servants to sell books. Quentell was one of the first printers to consistently provide his books with title-pages with approximately 91% of his over 380 publications including one.Quentell used the present “Magister cum discipulis”-woodcut in several other editions including the Heymericus de Campo Promptuarium argumentorum 1492 GW 12406 and Jacobus van Gruitrode Speculum aureum animae peccatricis 1493 GW M10728. Wynkyn de Worde used a copy in his Parabolarum Alani cum commento 1508 STC 254.3 and other printers copied it as well.All Quentell’s Ars moriendi editions are undated and the present one used his types 7 and 10 and initials e which all apeared in his books in the period 1488 to 1500. The present edition is probably dated ca. 1495 in the literature because it appears to fall between the two quarto editions thought to date from ca. 1493 and ca. 1498.The bookbinder Jean-Luc Honegger still active today is best known for his bindings for the Bibliothèque Nationale de France in Paris and the Bodmer Foundation near Geneva. With the bookplate of the Bibliotheca Philosophia Hermetica Joost Ritman in Amsterdam and probably bound for them. Slightly browned water stains at the foot of a few leaves not approaching the text some smudges in the margins and on the blank final page. The binding slightly worn at the extremities and with a few unobtrusive scratches on the back board. Sentences varied individually between 1 and 20 years in federal prison. Haywood got 20 years. Haywood and and a 8 other defendants skipped bail while their cases were on appeal in 1921 and went to live in the USSR where Haywood married and remained until his death in 1928. The IWW was severely crippled by all of the government trials and persecution and the continuing competition from the larger and less radical American Federation of Labor. The flight of Haywood and other leaders to the USSR probably didn't help. This IWW broadside appeal for funds seems to be quite uncommon. General Defense Committee unknown‎

Hagerty's Wheel — a circular diagram of the structure of the IWW's industrial union system — is printed on page 2. "Father" Thomas J. Hagerty b. 1862 was a Catholic priest a co-founder of the IWW the author of the IWW's omnipresent "Preamble" text and creator of the "Hagerty's Wheel" chart see: https://archive.iww.org/history/biography/FatherHaggerty/ and https://archive.iww.org/about/official/wheel/. Shortly after the establishment of the IWW in 1905 Hagerty left both the Catholic church and the radical political movement. Late in life before his death sometime in the 1920s Hagerty was reported by some of his former union comrades to be living in voluntary poverty on the streets of Chicago.<br /> <br /> This general IWW informational and organizing pamphlet was printed in many editions. The rear cover here states "This Pamphlet Published March 1933 Price 5c".
