Fine content War date A.L.S. small folio 1 page Kingston New Hampshire May 8th 1779 to Colonel Nathaniel Peabody his successor serving at the time in the Continental Congress regarding the status of land grants with inaccuracies on the Connecticut River in full: "Agreeable to your Request I applied to Col. Atkinson. who told me had a rough Draft of all the Towns laid out by New Hampshire on the west side of Connecticut River but not as they lay Connecticut with the Towns on the East side of the River; He informed me that Rockingham lay opposite to No. 4 which I accordingly Entered so on the plan but when I came up to Haverhill I found there was one more town on the West side of the River than on the East owning I suppose to Charlestown & perhaps some other Towns being larger than six miles on the River; the Town of Fairlee ought to come in between Thelford & Moretown and a Town not granted by New Hampshire between Stafford & Corinth. Those towns marked not granted Col. Atkinson thinks have been since granted by New York but he says were never granted by New Hampshire; those Towns you particularly enquired for you will find were not granted by the State; Moretown not granted by New Hampshire." Docketed on verso by Col. Nathanial Peabody: "Letter from Col. Bartlett about Lands on Connecticut River." Usual folds with minor damp staining; overall very good condition. Founding Father and Signer of the Declaration of Independence Nathanial Peabody 1741 - 1823 was commissioned officer in the loyalist New Hampshire Militia and as a Lieutenant Colonel participated in the 1774 Raid on Fort William & Mary a precursory event to the Revolutionary War. He resigned his commission after the raid denounced the Crown and immersed himself in New Hampshire revolutionary activity. Despite his major contributions to his home state Peabody spent the last 20 years of his life in debtor's prison in Exeter. unknown
