Davies John Paton
China Hand: An Autobiography
8vo, hardcover dj .At the height of the McCarthyite hysteria of the 1950s,john Paton Davies,jr., was summoned to the State Department one morning and fired. His offense? The career diplomat had counseled the U.S. government during World War II that the Communist forces in China were poised to take over the country~ which they did, in 1949. Davies joined the thousands of others who became the victims of a political maelstrom that engulfed the country and deprived the United States of the wisdom and guidance of an entire generation of East Asian diplomats and scholars. The son of American missionaries, Davies was born in China at the turn of the twentieth century. Educated in the United States, he joined the ranks of the newly formed Foreign Service in the 1930s and returned to China, where he would remain until nearly the end of World War II. During that time he became one of the first Americans to meet and talk with the young revolutionary known as Mao Zedong. He documented the personal excesses and political foibles of Chinese Nationalist leader Chiang Kai~shek. As a political aide to General Joseph "Vinegar Joe" Stilwell, the wartime commander of the Allied forces in East and South Asia, he traveled widely in the region, meeting with colonial India's Nehru and Gandhi to gauge whether their animosity to British rule would translate into support for Japan. Davies ended the war serving in Moscow with George F. Kennan, the architect of America's policy toward the Soviet Union. Kennan found in Davies a lifelong friend and colleague. Neither, however, was immune to the virulent anticommunism of the immediate postwar years. China Hand is the story of a man who captured with wry and judicious insight the times in which he lived, both as observer and as actor. John Paton Davies,Jr. (1908~99) was a Foreign Service officer in the U.S. Department of State from 1931 to 1954. He was also the author of Foreign and Other Affairs and Dragon by the Tail: American, British,Japanese, and Russian Encounters with China and One Another

At the beginning of his career he served on Lord Amherst's Mission to China and after spending the best part of his career in the service of the East India Company he succeeded Lord Pottinger as Governor of Hong Kong. A scholarly man he did not fit into this role his knowledge and appreciation of Chinese culture and life being very unpopular with the European community. The frostiness was such that when he finally departed Hong Kong the European community showed their displeasure by not acknowledging his departure in any way. . Oriental Translation Fund. hardcover

DAVIS, JOHN A.
The Young Mandarin.
Boston.: Congregational Sunday School and Publishing Society. 1st Edition. 1896. Black and white frontispiece with tissue guard and 2 further illustrations by H. Winthrop Peirce. Attractive grey cloth covered boards illustrated in blue and green. 396pp. Some light soiling mainly to the rear board and spine. Head and tail of spine tender rear inner hinge split but secure corners rubbed and a neat prior owner signature on the front free endpaper dated 3/23/'97. Much better than it sounds this is a very pleasing copy of a scarce item. "The author states that ' the story - though not all fact is not fiction. Its incidents are either real occurrences or like them. The official corruption presented may be less in other localities; yet it is to be feared that it is general and great. The customs described may differ in other parts of China; the author has presented what he knew prevailed in the vicinity of Amoy his home for a time.

The facts regarding the famine were gathered from published reports of missionaries and from statements made by missionaries to the author. At least one of those stated that sixty-three per cent of government appropriations were taken for their own use by mandarins instead of being applied for the relief of suffering.

The Tai Ping Rebellion is of course a matter of history: but the facts relating to the capture of Amoy were obtained from him whose name Rev. J.V.N. Talmage D.D. for more than 40 years a missionary in China appears on the page of dedication." . Congregational Sunday School and Publishing Society hardcover
