A good copy of a now remarkably scarce work profusely illustrated with remarkable black and white photographic portraits and panoramas and detailed chapters on everything from history geography culture and specific industries like shipping manufacturing agriculture and trade. Whilst earlier works in the series focussed exclusively on British colonial interests Western Australia Natal Ceylon and British Malaya the editor notes that:
"More than one half the imports and exports of China passes through the various Treaty Ports and it would have been a negation of one of the avowed objects of these publications if no attempt had been to show the present-day tendency of this trade and how the proportion borne by the British Empire compares with that of its competitors". The series served as a handsome soft power testament to British colonial might and aspiration. . Lloyd's Greater Britain Publishing Company, Ltd. hardcover

[China; Yunnan]; Little Archibald
ACROSS YUNNAN: A JOURNEY OF SURPRISES Including an Account of the Remarkable French Railway Line now completed to Yunnan-fu
London: Sampson Low Marston & Co. Ltd. 1910. Very Rare First Edition. No Copies Currently Exist in Commerce. This copy with excellent provenance having come from the War Office marked received on 22 Apr 1910. Illustrated with many full-page plates from period photographs and a large folding map. 8vo publisher's original red cloth the spine lettered in gilt the upper cover decorated with Chinese bordrs in gilt and a central calligraphic ornament in black. 164 pp. A very fine copy as close to pristine as one could hope already unusually rare this copy is also extremely well preserved. VERY RARE FIRST EDITION AND ONE OF THE FIRST BOOKS IN ENGLISH TO DESCRIBE THE PROVINCE OF YUNNAN. Archibald Little wrote a number of books on China as did his wife Alicia who called herself Mrs. Archibald Little. Little was a merchant scholar and later travel writer who'd spent many years in China. With his wife they moved to Chungking an isolated city to the far west of the country. Impossibly hot in the summer the couple had planned to build a holiday home in the cooler countryside but the authorities blocked the idea after concern that the locals would not take kindly to foreigners. An idea was then hatched for the Littles to move onto a local farm by the Yangtse River for a few months with the hope that it might get the locals used to their presence.
Published posthumously in 1910 Archibald Little's memoir of his journey across the Yunnan Province in Southwest China was one of the first comprehensive accounts of the region to be published in English. Little a skilled linguist worked as a merchant in China for over fifty years and opened up the Upper Yangtze area to steam-powered commerce. He was well known for his intrepid travels into territories not yet explored by Westerners and his record of this journey was originally published as a series of letters to the North China Herald. This book also contains Little's account of the building of the French Railway Line to Yunnan-Fu which provided a trade route from India to the Upper Yangtze region. Across Yunnan was completed and edited by Little's wife after his death in 1908. The book includes a detailed map of the area and several photographs. Research Gate
Mrs. Archibald Little began a prolific two decade literary career in London focused primarily on highlighting the plight of women. During this time she was also active politically in the feminist movement penning pamphlets lecturing and campaigning around women's property rights suffrage. Both she and her husband traveled around China although Mrs. Little had to dress as a male to avoid attracting attention which had on occasion resulted in items being thrown at her.
The book offered here is very rare. At the present time no copies appear in the marketplace or in commerce. Additionally this copy comes with very fine provenance having been owned by the British War Office. The War Office has referred to several British government organizations in history all relating to the army. It was a department of the British Government responsible for the administration of the British Army between 1857 and 1964 when its functions were transferred to the new Ministry of Defence MoD. It was at that time equivalent to the Admiralty responsible for the Royal Navy RN and much later the Air Ministry which oversaw the Royal Air Force RAF. The name 'War Office' is also given to the former home of the department located at the junction of Horse Guards Avenue and Whitehall in central London. Sampson Low, Marston & Co., Ltd. hardcover

Collection of photographs.
1908 - 14. . 102 photographs size range from 8 x 6 cm to 11 x 16 cm including 2 with stamps of Lai Chong studio on reverse some inscribed in German; margins chipped some with creases several images faded.
A collection of photographs recording German presence in China and Japan in the years 1908 1914.

Decades before WWI Germany competed with other industrialised nations to acquire colonies and create "spheres of influence" in the non-European areas interfering in the Chinese domestic affairs.
In the wake that followed the murder of two German missionaries in 1898 Chinese government agreed to lease the territory of Tsingtao to Germany as a colony for the period of 99 years in order to appease the German government. Consequently the Germans began to assert their influence across the rest of the province of Shandong. They built the city and port of Tsingtao which became the base of the German Navy's East Asia Squadron that operated in support of German territories in the Pacific.

When the WWI erupted in summer 1914 Japan issued an ultimatum ordering the German government to withdraw their warships from Chinese and Japanese waters and transfer control over Tsingtao to Japan. When the ultimatum expired Japan began a bombardment of the port on 2 September 1914. Britain wary of Japanese intentions in the region decided to send troops to assist the Japanese and to keep a watchful eye upon proceedings. The Germany garrison held out for over two months before finally surrendering on 7 November 1914 and handing over the port three days later. The surrender of Tsingtao marked the end of the Germans in China and was a great morale booster to the Japanese.

Several photographs show SS Patricia a passenger liner built in 1899 in Germany for the Hamburg-America Packet Steamship Company. In 1914 during WWI she was chartered to the German Government who used it as a troop transport to Tsingtao.
1908 - 14. unknown

PEKING REVIEW re-titled BEIJING REVIEW in 1979.1 altogether 621 issues.

621 issues

Beijing Review Chinese: åŒ—äº¬å‘¨å ±; pinyin: BÄ›ijÄ«ng ZhÅubà o; Wade–Giles: Pei-ching Yu-pao previously Peking Review is China's only national news magazine in English published by the Chinese Communist Party-owned China International Publishing Group. In 2006 it claimed a per-issue circulation of 70000 and distribution "throughout China and 150 countries and regions worldwide." Founded in March 1958 as the weekly Peking Review it was an important tool for the Chinese government to communicate to the rest of world. The first issue included an editor's note explaining that the magazine was meant to "provide timely accurate first-hand information on economic political and cultural developments in China and her relations with the rest of the world." The U.S. Postal Service initially restricted distribution of the magazine but the U.S. Supreme Court overturned this policy in Lamont v. Postmaster General. In October 2020 the United States Department of State designated Beijing Review as a "foreign mission" of China. An important time period covering the entire Cultural Revolution through the death of Chairman Mao the policies of Deng Xiaoping and the establishment of modern China.

Each issue in original printed wrappers: 1963: No. 10 11 13 15 25 30 32-36 38 41-45 52; 1964: No. 1-52; 1965: No. 1-19 21-22 24-52; 1966: No. 5-30; 1970: No. special issue 8 May 21 31; 1972: No. 1-33 35-52; 1973: No. 1-52; 1974: No. 1-35 37-49 51-52; 1975: No. 1-52; 1976: No. 1-52; 1977: No. 1-52; 1978: No. 1-52; 1979: No. 1-43; 1980 No. 10 12-15 21 33 38 40 47 48; 1981: No. 1 2 5 23 27 28 37 42 44 51; 1982: No. 31 33 35 37 38 48 50-52; 1984: No. 36 40 42 1985: No. 9 11 12; 1986: No. 1 3 13 14 30 36 43 46; 1987: No. 8 9 27 28 37 42 44-46; 1988: No. 10; 1989: No. 3 5 6 9 19 21-23 27-29 41; 1995: No. 4 8

The name change of this journal under President Deng presaged a new direction. From being a revolutionary magazine presenting the ideas and aspirations of a young and relatively weak Socialist state struggling along the road to the construction of Communism it was now displaying its open statement of aims of an outright capitalist and imperialist state – with global ambitions. From the very beginning the new Socialist state had to face many obstacles. There was opposition from within and without the country from within and without the Party. Those who might have played an important role in the past in the fight for liberation were not necessarily the ones who were needed to build a radically new society. All revolutions bring with it old baggage from the past but some leaders found it more difficult than others to throw it away and start fresh.

æ‚志主è¦æŠ¥é“ä¸å›½çš„政治ç»æµŽçŽ°çŠ¶ï¼Œä»‹ç»ä¸å›½æ”¿åºœå¯¹å†…

Published by Guozi Shudian for the Foreign Language Press, paperback

[CHINA]
Pair of Chinese export watercolours of architectural "Views of China
Canton Guangzhou workshop 1810. Watercolour and opaque body-colour with ink on thick chinese paper depicitng 1. A Temple Compound and 2. An Imperial Pleasure Garden. Sheet size: 16 1/8 x 22 inches. An exceptional pair of Chinese export watercolours rich in architectural detail exemplifying the pictorial conventions developed to frame China for European eyes.

A fine pair of large-scale architectural fantasy views produced in a Canton workshop for the export trade at the height of the China Trade period. The compositions exemplify the hybrid artistic language developed for Western patrons by Chinese painters trained in native techniques yet attuned to foreign tastes for picturesque and monumental subjects. The first painting depicts a two-courtyard Buddhist or Taoist temple approached through a three-bay shan-men ceremonial gateway flanked symmetrically by drum and bell towers. A painted screen wall in the inner court displays guardian deities in brilliant red while the gilded Buddha presides from an elevated rear hall. The temples architecture is stylized but evocative of southern Chinese religious compounds. Above the gateway a plaque bears brush-written characters reading "Beautiful Hall of Profound Reverence" a fictive name likely invented by the workshop for decorative effect rather than to identify a specific site. The second painting shows a walled palace complex centered around a multi-tiered pavilion rising from a lotus pond filled with sculptural rocks and pleasure boats. Dragon grottoes stone causeways and ornamental bridges evoke the fantastical terrain of imperial parks such as the Yuanmingyuan rendered here in a compressed stage-set perspective. White elephants bearing crimson banners guard the main gate signaling a courtly or ceremonial setting. While reminiscent of northern gardens the details are compositional inventions rather than topographical records. The palette vermilion malachite green gamboge and carbon black and the use of crisp ink outlines are typical of late 18th-century Canton export workshops. Unlike smaller pith-paper images destined for albums these works were painted on thick laid paper of generous dimensions. Loose drawings such as these were often compiled into custom albums in British India where Chinese watercolours were often combined with Indian and Persian material to appeal to the tastes of British collectors. The Persian-Urdu foliation on the verso indicates their inclusion in such a collection likely assembled in Calcutta or Lucknow in the early 19th century. While drawing upon recognizable architectural forms and cultural symbols the views are best understood as imaginary or composite constructions designed to satisfy European curiosity about China. The temple compound reflects generic southern typologies while the palace garden borrows selectively from northern models such as the Yuanmingyuan. unknown

(RUSSIA - EXPLORATION IN CHINA AND ALASKA). COXE, WILLIAM
ACCOUNT OF THE RUSSIAN DISCOVERIES BETWEEN ASIA AND AMERICA TO WHICH ARE ADDED THE CONQUEST OF SIBERIA AND THE HISTORY OF THE TRANSACTIONS AND COMMERCE BETWEEN RUSSIA AND CHINA
London: Cadell and Davies 1803. ONE OF 60 LARGE PAPER COPIES of the "considerably enlarged" Fourth Edition ours a variant retaining the date of 1803 on the title-page rather than 1804. 330 x 252 mm. 13 x 9 7/8". xviii 4 xix 1 380 pp. Two leaves usually bound at the end and containing the "List of Principle Books Referred to in this Work" and "Works by the same Author" bound between pp. xvii and xix here.
VERY FINE CONTEMPORARY SPRINKLED CALF raised bands flanked by plain and decorative gilt rules and chain roll spine panels with star centerpiece red morocco label marbled endpapers. With six engravings: five maps two folding and one view. A Large Paper Copy. Front pastedown with engraved armorial bookplate of Marcus Gage; title page with ink inscription at head: "M. Gage's Book got from Mr. Asperne London April 15th 1805." Lada-Mocarski 29 note; Howes C-834; Sabin 17309; Streeter VI 3501; Cordier Bibliotheca Sinica pp. 2447-48. ◆Small chip to tail of spine corners a bit rubbed flyleaves somewhat foxed the usual minor foxing to plates and a bit of offsetting to adjacent pages otherwise A VERY FINE COPY OF AN ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE EDITION clean and fresh internally with vast margins and the binding firm lustrous and with only very minor wear to the joints.

This is an extremely well-preserved copy in an elegant contemporary binding of the most sought-after edition of a key source on Russian exploration and that country's efforts to expand trade with China and Alaska. Eminent historian William Coxe 1747-1828 studied the voyages and exploration by Bering and others to the regions of Kamchatka the Aleutian Islands and Siberia to prepare this overview of the geography and cultures of the lands between Russia and North America and to analyze the economic potential of trade--particularly in furs--with the region. According to Sabin "Mr. Coxe's book contains many curious and important facts with respect to the various attempts of the Russians to open a communication to the New World." The 1780 first edition of this work covered Russian voyages of discovery between 1740 and 1769; the 1787 third edition added a supplement comparing these explorations to those of Captains Cook and Clerke. Our much-expanded fourth edition gives in the words of the Preface "a complete series of voyages from 1711 to 1792 comprising all that is known on the subject." Some of this supplementary information was gleaned from earlier accounts by German historians G. F. Muller and P. S. Pallas and some from Coxe's own travels in Russia. According to Lada-Mocarski Coxe "also succeeded in securing additional material: for instance the narrative and maps of Krenitzin and Levashev's 'secret' expedition the first official Russian government expedition since Bering's 2nd expedition of 1741. He was able to secure this particular information not widely known at the time even in Russia from Dr. Wm. Robertson who in turn obtained it through his friend Dr. Rogerson first physician to the Empress Catherine II. . . . In view of the above additions one should consider the fourth edition of 1803 as the most desirable." He concludes: "Coxe's work particularly the fourth edition is a result of contemporary and authoritative sources translated into English not to be overlooked by scholars and collectors alike." There are also distinct aesthetic advantages to the present Large Paper version over the octavo printing. Not only is the type beautifully re-set and laid out as well as surrounded by vast margins but as Streeter notes there are two charts here that are not included in the octavo issue of 1803. The original owner of this volume Marcus Gage is known to have assembled a substantial library of beautifully cared-for books on travel and discovery see for example "Exploration & Discovery 1576-1939 Books from the Library of Franklin Brooke-Hitching" passim. Gage notes that he got the book from "Mr. Asperne"—no doubt the London publisher and bookseller James Asperne 1757-1820. ABPC and RBH find just four other Large Paper copies at auction in the past 45 years two of which had condition issues. One could wait a considerable time to find a copy as attractive and desirable as the present one. Cadell and Davies unknown
