With an Introduction by Chwast's cousin Dachine Rainer the anarchist writer whose novella A Room at the Inn would be published the following year. An early work by Chwast expressing his lifelong anti-war views the sequel to which Seymour Chwast at War with War was published in 2016. In A Book of Battles Chwast illustrates nine battles-from Marathon in 490 B.C. to Ypres in the first World War-accompanied by quotations the effect of which as Rainer notes in her introduction is "to give rise to a number of provocative speculations on the desirability of an enduring 'Cease Fire!'" Printed in silver ink with illustrations of elephants on deep red handmade paper. The text is a poem written in Thai and an English translation is provided on a separate sheet of paper accompanying the book. In Thailand for many centuries rare white elephants were captured and tamed whenever they were discovered in order to be presented to the king. In the Introduction to the book Kaldewey explains that the elephants were presented to court in a ceremony that included music and dance. "For each of them the court poet composes a special welcoming lullaby" one of which is presented here. The lullaby compels the elephant not to miss her past in the forest as "There is much discomfort in the forest but bliss reigns in the city. Blame no one for your fate as the royal elephant has been decided by Brahma himself. The gods deem you fit for His Majesty and we will care for you as such." Bound by Thomas Zwang in traditional Thai style with paper-covered boards stamped with the title in silver and enclosed in a heavily-textured handmade-paper chemise. Original artwork for a Christmas card by Georgie Gaskin
1905. Gaskin Georgie. 5ff. An original pen & ink drawing and two proofs one hand-colored and one printed plus a final printed copy of a Christmas card designed by Georgie Gaskin for Laurence W. Hodson and his family. The card is for the year 1896 and depicts Santa Claus heavily laden with sacks of toys bestowing gifts upon two of the Hodsons' children. The drawing is signed "G.C. Gaskin" and it and the hand-colored proof have her pencilled notes at the bottom. Also included is a hand-colored rough illustration of three children at play that went unused. Georgie Gaskin and her husband Arthur were heavily influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement. Though Arthur Gaskin illustrated books including The Shepheard's Calendar by the Kelmscott Press the couple was more well known for their elegant handmade jewelry. Georgie designed the jewelry which often featured elaborate patterns and intricate detailing a characteristic that can readily be seen in this Christmas card design. The original drawing and hand-colored proof have a few spots of discoloration not affecting the images and the printed proof and extra hand-colored illustration are creased along the margins; the printed card was previously held in a mat and shows some mat burn to the front side with adhesive on the back; otherwise the items in this collection are in near fine condition. unknown

A suite of twenty-five laser prints of drawings by Michael McCurdy each hand-colored signed and numbered by the artist. The drawings were originally done by McCurdy at the request of the University Press of Kansas which commissioned the artist to illustrate its Kansas Centennial Edition of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1999. McCurdy's drawings are bold and strong yet still dream-like providing a new interpretation of Baum's classic children's tale. The prints are carefully hand-colored with subtle tints and tone. The prints are housed in an emerald green clamshell box together with a copy of the book which is signed by the artist with an original drawing of the Scarecrow. In addition to McCurdy's illustrations the Centennial Edition features a Foreword by Ray Bradbury. Extremely fine. Michael McCurdy unknown

Verona: Officina Bodoni 1968. Manzù Giacomo. Folio. 96 iv pp. From an edition of 114 copies this is one of 105 on Magnani paper signed by the artist Giacomo Manzù on the colophon page. This copy also bears a contemporary inscription from Manzù on the front endpaper. Illustrated with seven full-page etchings by Manzù. Printed by Martino Mardersteig for the American art publisher A.E. Racolin. Loose as issued in the publisher's binding of green morocco-backed vellum with a relief of the head of Oedipus by Manzù. Martino Mardersteig recounts the "strange pre-history" of this elegant edition: he and A.E. Racolin approached Manzù twice about his illustrating a book for an American audience and both times the artist rejected the poems under consideration for his illustrations. During the second visit Mardersteig noticed Manzù's sketches for costumes and decor for Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex which included "a magnificent metre-high relief of the head of Oedipus." Mardersteig and Manzù reached an agreement on an edition of Sophocles's tragedy and the magnificent relief became the first etching as well as its cover illustration. This is a very fine copy of one the most elusive Officina Bodoni titles housed in its original folding case which shows very light bumps to corners. Mardersteig 155. Officina Bodoni unknown

Preliminary cover design for Penny Candy by Edward Fenton
1970. Gorey Edward. Watercolor and ink on paper measuring 8 1/4 by 7 1/4 inches. Archivally matted and framed. Preliminary artwork for the cover design of Fenton's book a fantasy story based on the English "Tinker Tailor" rhyme. A copy of the trade paperback edition of the book which was published by Holt in 1970 is included in a sleeve affixed to the back of the frame. The key differences between this preliminary drawing and the finished work are most discernible in the five children standing in front of the candy counter: in the preliminary artwork the children's clothing is colored their arrangement is different as is their height in relation to the counter. Gorey also used some ink flourishes to make the titling which lines up vertically on either side of the central image appear more like pieces of candy. This was not used in the published version. Gorey's watercolor work for published books seldom appears on the market. Very fine in an attractive black acrylic and resin frame. unknown

Kyôchûzan Mountains of the Heart
Japan: Sûzan Shobô 1816. Bôsai Kameda. Small quarto. 19ff. A Japanese book of color woodblock prints by Kameda Bôsai 1754-1826 one of the leading painters of the Nanga or Bunjinga literati schools of painting. The seventeen full-page illustrations five of which extend across the page spread are landscapes depicting mountainous terrain comprised of strong black calligraphic lines with soft colors. Each includes descriptive text printed along the margins and the artist's stamp in red. The images are simple but poetic expressing the artist's love of the natural world with descriptions that translate as: "The refreshing sound of a mountain waterfall" "The intoxicating effect of river and mountains" "Solitary fisher on a wintry river" and "Jeweled mountains like sapphires and water like emerald" among others. With a preface and two closing notes. Working during the Edo period Bôsai was recognized for his paintings calligraphy and book illustrations. In her book Block Printing and Book Illustration in Japan Louise Norton Brown describes Kyôchûzan as "The most charming book produced by the Japanese Impressionistic School." The colophon which is adhered to the inside of the back cover has different lettering and paper than the rest of the book. It is dated 1809 in contradiction to the dates stated in the preface and postscripts; according to scholars of Bôsai this was most likely the result of careless pasting by the bookbinder. Stab-bound in gray-green wrappers with a printed yellow label to the front cover. Covers and one spot on the spine show some light rubbing and wear else a fine copy. Protected in a blue cloth chemise that closes with bone clasps. The book was created in an attempt to prevent the demolition of the seventeenth-century Trinity Hospital; in the end the campaign was successful and the building was saved. Ashbee's text explains the historic and architectural significance of the building. The illustrations depict architectural details and two of the plates have hand-colored illustrations of stained glass window designs. Others show a map of the grounds an aerial view elevation drawings and depictions of statues. Charles Robert Ashbee an architect designer and the founder of the Essex House Press founded the Guild & School of Handcraft in 1888 in order to protect the status of craftsmen and to promote a high standard of work. This book demonstrates the attention to design type and detail that would characterize the work of the Essex House Press. Bound in tan wrappers with yapped edges printed with Ashbee's flower insignia to the front cover. Edges of covers show some fraying as usual else a near fine copy of a fragile book. The collection was edited by the artist Jack Sonenberg and contains works by Denise Levertov Robert Creeley Anthony Hecht Robert Duncan and others. The work was intended to raise money for Artists & Writers Protest Inc. an organization of artists who opposed the Vietnam War and who felt that their work should be a vehicle for political commentary and change. The group grew out of the Greenwich Village Peace Center & War Resisters' League and they staged protest demonstrations and events throughout New York City. A poem by Blinn is accompanied by a watercolor illustration that extends across the central page spread depicting three yellow balls floating on a cerulean pool surrounded by evergreen trees. The image is an homage to David Hockney who made a series of paintings of swimming pools using vibrant shades of acrylic paint. The title page is accented with blue and yellow watercolor and on the page following the poem is a palette of the watercolors that Blinn used in her illustration. Created by Blinn in the summer of 1987 the book is an ode to the season bringing alive the bright colors heat and slower pace. Bound in tan cloth with a watercolor label evoking the undulation of water. Housed in a matching box backed in light green morocco. Laid in is a portfolio of materials describing the artist's process of imagining writing and designing the book. These include diagrams depicting ideas for the book's binding and eleven drafts of the text evolving from prose to poetry showing the author's changes. This collection of poems by Langston Hughes was selected by Angelou who also wrote the Introduction and Afterword. Although Hughes was a fairly controversial poet in his time often criticized for the deceptive simplicity of his verses he "succeeded in his lifetime aim: to create a body of work that would epitomize the beauty and variety of African-American experiences as well as the diversity of emotions thoughts and dreams that he saw common to all human beings." Beasley's collages were chosen by Angelou to perfectly compliment Hughes's eloquent poems. According to Angelou "She sees human beings our foibles frailties and strengths and she cares about what she sees." Beasley's work is influenced by two of the forerunners of African-American art Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence and her artwork was twice awarded the Presidential Seal. A quirky type specimen book printed on various colors of paper in many colors of ink. With full-page illustrations including a cartoonish frontispiece of a man with a printing press in the top of his head as well as typographic ornaments and engravings that include the headings from 19th-century almanacs. The ImpPress Typebook is characterized by Stermer's sense of humor: Stermer writes in the colophon that this type sample book was ".primarily intended as a means by which the Prop is cutting down smoking. It is almost impossible to set type and smoke simultaneously." Although best known as a San Francisco-based illustrator designer and art director who worked for such influential magazines as Ramparts and Mother Jones Dugald Stermer started the ImpPress while living in Houston Texas during the 1960s. He became inspired to print after he was given a small printing press and some assorted type by his wife for Christmas. From the library of Ben and Bernarda Shahn with a label laid in designed by their son Jonathan Shahn. A small library label to front cover else fine in black printed wrappers. Illustrated with reproductions of drawings by Howard Chandler Christy an American illustrator best known for his patriotic portraits of military men and romantic depictions of society women. The illustrations accompany a story in verse by the American poet James Whitcomb Riley. The poem is told in dialect and describes the courtship of the young narrator's parents and the opposition that they faced from his mother's family. Printed on heavier paper with borders in peach around the text and some of the illustrations and peach highlights to the black & white plates. The illustrations are softly sketched and sentimental depicting the events of the poem. Bound in olive green cloth with a large full-color pictorial label to the front cover reproducing a painting by Christy and titled in gilt. Extremely fine and bright with only one small indentation to the rear cover. In the rare original box with a pictorial design to the front cover which has some edgewear split corners and a light spot of soiling to the lid. Having been kept in the box this copy is in uncommonly fine condition. BAL 16800. Bobbs Merrill unknown
