The Four Seasons. An Impression of Spring Summer Autumn and Winter: a Landscape Panorama
London: Gogmagog Press 1965. Cox Morris. Four small octavo volumes each 26pp. One of 100 copies printed on Hosho paper signed by the artist/printer Morris Cox. Each volume contains a colorful panorama of nature printed from heavily textured blocks which give the offset prints an embossed effect. The changing seasons appear in a flowing image with delicate natural forms and subtle hues. Colin Franklin says that the group is "reckoned as the peak of his achievement as a printer." The texture of the prints derives from the unusual printing blocks used to create them. Cox mounted sheets of cardboard onto plywood and layered them with gesso next adding materials from nature like seeds leaves and twigs. These natural elements were then varnished for strength. Printing these unconventional blocks required an inventive approach. According to David Chambers "These were printed by using the office copying press and then screwing this down several times as the blocks were drawn through on a long carriage." Slight spine slant on Autumn light uniform toning else a fine set in monotype-printed pictorial boards and original acetate wrappers. Considered to be the magnum opus of the Press. Shakespeare William
The Works of William Shakespeare in Ten Volumes
Stratford-on-Avon: Shakespeare Head Press 1906. Ten quarto volumes. This is one of only twelve sets printed on pure vellum with a frontispiece illustration in each volume. It represents a monumental undertaking which took four years to complete and consumed about 250 sheets for each of the twelve copies printed on vellum. The Shakespeare Head Press was founded by A. H. Bullen who had the idea of printing the complete works of Shakespeare at Stratford-on-Avon as the result of a dream in which he was presented with a set of Shakespeare's works while visiting the town. This is the first edition of Shakespeare to have been published in Stratford and the first major publication of the Press. Although other Shakespeare Head Press sets printed on vellum regularly appear on the market this Shakespeare set is very difficult to obtain. Volumes I and II are lacking the silk fore-edge ties spine lettering a trifle rubbed on volume VI few volumes with minor wrinkling to spine ends else a fine copy in creamy full limp vellum stamped in gilt. Chinoiseries / Costumes d'Antan
France / China 1900. Octavo. 22pp. Album of Chinese landscapes in original watercolors facing depictions of women's antique costumes painted on silk interleaved with tissue. "Chinoiserie" refers to European art characterized by imagery of a romanticized China a notion that similarly underpins the genre of costume books which presented foreign fashion through a European lens. It appears that the brightly-colored landscapes in this album were done later than the silk paintings most likely by a Western artist. Included are market scenes depictions of boats on a river and pagodas. These European stylings contrast with the depictions of Chinese fashion opposite them bringing a stark juxtaposition of East and West not often seen in costume books. The delicate paintings of costumes on silk are done in a much more traditional Chinese style. Great attention is paid to details such as the knotted red and green silk cords worn around the women's waists floral hair ornaments and the subtle patterns of their loose-sleeved robes. One woman carries a basket of flowers another poses beside a deer and one is dressed as a warrior with a sword in a jacket and loose trousers tying on her knee guards. The costumes are colored in soft shades of blue pink and green. Very fine in soft gilt-titled white calf with raised bands on the spine blind-tooled with decorative rules. Housed in a flannel-lined box. unknown

Illustrated Manuscript Valentine
1860. Single leaf measuring 5 by 7 3/4 inches. A drawing of a young man and woman glancing shyly at each other with their noses drawn in an angular fashion so as to point at each other. Below the figures is penned words "i cant sic stop long this time." A Feb. 25 1861 inscription on the verso says "Valentine - Mr. Willis E. Marden." The young man wears simple clothing a blue hat with a red band a red shirt and blue pants. His hair is long and curly. The woman's costume is more elaborate; she wears red shoes and a beaded necklace with her blue dress and her uncovered hair is curled. The sheet of paper was once folded into quarters. Until postal rates became standardized early valentines were typically folded sealed and hand-delivered to a beloved's doorstep. Kaldewey Gunnar
California Time
Postenkill NY: Kaldewey Press 1987. Kaldewey Gunnar. Folio. 36pp. One of forty-five copies in a plexiglass binding by Christian Zwang of Hamburg. Signed by the author/artist/printer Gunnar Kaldewey. With numerous monochromatic and two-tone illustrations. Written illustrated designed and printed by Gunnar Kaldewey as Volume 5 of the Kaldewey Press series. In 1977 Kaldewey printed New York his first book about America. Ten years later California Time was published as a counterpoint to that volume. In it Kaldewey offers his observations about California's landscapes both natural and manmade in prose that ranges from playful to bleak. He sees the landscape with an artist's eye describing the "simmering city" and the "juicy orange of the West." These verbal images are illustrated in Kaldewey's stylized manner including one double-page spread showing the Pacific Ocean in aqua and gray on a transparency. A remarkable production by one of America's leading contemporary book artists. Housed in an orange cloth folding box lettered in silver on the front cover and spine. Together with the original woodblock to the first illustration in the book. Printed in silver the illustration is of a palm tree placed across from the text: "It is the sun the cars and the palm trees. A lot of light. Everything has to do with light." The block was inscribed on the back by Kaldewey in 1988. Von Lucius p. 66-69. Kaldewey Press unknown

Efsun Çiçegi Enchanting Beauty Flowers
Istanbul: Ebristan Yayinlari 2003. Barutçugil Hikmet. Original marbled paper by the premier marbling artist in Turkey Hikmet Barutçugil. Signed and dated by the artist. Ebru or marbling is one of the oldest arts in Turkey. In addition to being used in book binding and design it was often used as a background for calligraphy. In this way marbling was elevated to a high art. Ever since its fifteenth-century beginnings artists in Turkey and around the world have experimented with marbling in order to create increasingly complex designs which are works of art in their own right. In this lovely example four tulips in lavender and violet bloom against a marbled background in shades of green pink blue and violet. The marbling transitions from delicate washes of green to bolder defined lines which evoke mountains and sky. El Kasibu Habibullah
Istanbul: Ebristan 2008. Barutçugil Hikmet. Marbled paper measuring 23 3/4 by 32 inches with elegant marbled calligraphy in Arabic. The script translates to say "One who conducts business in a Halal fashion is the beloved servant of Allah." This superb example of Ebru the ancient Turkish art of paper marbling has a bold simplicity. Ebru was traditionally used as a background for calligraphy and is considered high art. This paper was marbled twice using a stencil technique and resists. The result is that the calligraphy and the background have different colors and patterns: the background of this piece is decorated with bubbles of pink peach and white while the contrasting calligraphy is swirled with black and gray. The calligrapher who created the design was A. Hulusi Efendi 1869-1940 who belonged to a long line of Turkish marbling artists and calligraphers. Signed Hikmet Heida which means "wisdom of god." The Various Birds: Fifty-six Varieties. The Color of the Bird Shape of the Body
Japan c. mid-nineteenth century. Small quarto. 27ff. A handmade book of delicate Japanese brush paintings of common birds ranging from sparrows and songbirds to ducks and other fowl. The paintings are executed in a style similar to sumi-e. They are predominantly monochromatic with subtle gradations of black ink accented with washes of brown yellow and red. The illustrations stand alone on most of the pages but a few including one of a majestic pheasant are accompanied by descriptions in Japanese. Each page is comprised of a double sheet measuring 10 3/16 by 14 1/4 inches and most of the paintings stretch across the page spread. The only clue to the painter's identity is a note in Japanese on the front wrapper which explains that the illustrations were "painted by the next-door neighbor -- during the weekdays." The note also indicates that the book was owned by Goshodo a bookseller. It seems likely that the paintings were given as a neighborly gift and made into a book. Some light wear and soiling to covers faint soiling to a few pages else a very fine collection of paintings. unknown

Boston: Godine Press 1970. Hidy Lance. Framed etching measuring 11 by 8 inches. One of an unknown number of copies; the edition was probably no greater than 200. An image of an early flying machine crashed and abandoned in a field of clover printed in green with a caption printed in orange. A black border frames the scene. This is an early etching by Lance Hidy who was a co-founder of the Godine Press in Boston. The artist and printer have a long history of collaboration. The original version of this print was made while Hidy was at Yale in 1966 or '67 and this the second was made a few years later with Godine's encouragement. Winter William
Shakespeare's England
NY: Macmillan and Company 1894. Fitch E. 12mo. 274pp. A unique copy with beautifully executed original pen and ink drawings throughout showing the sights and landmarks of Shakespeare's country. Profusely illustrated with hand-drawn vignettes of the thatched cottages of Stratford-upon-Avon landscape vistas of Warwick and Windsor and other known British locations. The illustrations are imaginative and romantic: at one point a flock of birds alights from the rooftop of the Red Horse Inn and wings its way across the open pages to Stratford Church. The text which is meant to be a guide for the American literary traveler opens with quotations from Shakespeare and Wordsworth. The illustrator has encircled these verses with a set of scenic cascading postcards threaded together with a ribbon. Very little is known about the illustrator E. Fitch: one illustration is signed "E. Fitch Catskill" but no record could be found of an illustrator by that name in the area. Ornately bound in red morocco by the American bindery Bradstreet's. Both covers are decorated with borders of oak leaves and acorns employing onlays of green morocco and gilt vines. The spine is divided into six compartments gilt-titled in one and with gilt roses in the remaining five. Green morocco doublures are decorated with gilt dentelles and a border of leafy vines accented with minute butterflies. Silver moiré silk endpapers bordered with gilt decoration and a rose in each corner complete this sumptuous binding. Extremely fine and housed in a red morocco pull-off case. Laurencin Marie
Color lithograph of a young woman
Laurencin Marie. Color lithograph measuring 12 by 9 1/2 inches by Marie Laurencin a contemporary of Picasso and Braque. Although she was one of a few women artists of the time to experiment with Cubist ideas her work does not reach the height of abstraction attained by Picasso. Instead her focus is on the feminine: the subjects of her work are most often young women depicted in soft pastel colors. The femininity of her work is often viewed as a response to Cubism's masculine modernism. This print depicts a woman with a tender tranquil expression wearing an elaborate bow in her hair. Matted in an antique-style frame with curls of gilt decoration from the House of Heydenryk in New York. The whole measures 18 3/4 by 16 1/8 inches. Snyder who served as a Gunner's Mate aboard the U.S.S. Richmond from 1941 to 1943. The first two volumes contain Snyder's notes and assignments on such matters as wrecking mines depth charges and ammunition as well as his basic duties. These notes are enhanced by Snyder's draftsman-like color illustrations which detail the structure and functioning of the various weaponry with which he would have been familiar. These include mines the .45 caliber automatic pistol and roller-bearing gun mounts. In addition Snyder -- whose nickname was "Doc" -- provides illustrated charts of semaphore alphabet naval and weather flags map cross-hatching legends and military insignia for various countries. In the other two volumes Snyder switches from theory to practice as he begins a tour aboard the Richmond and the blank books become a daily logbook. Included are his rather restrained comments on Pearl Harbor "Sunday evening -- War!!!/Oh my! Well here's what we've been waiting for . Arizona and Oklahoma got it bad!" a lengthy first-hand account of the Battle of Komandorskis off the coast of Siberia as well as a long semi-bawdy ballad about an old maid on Waikiki entitled "A Torrid Tragedy of the Tropics." In these volumes Snyder's illustrations are less abundant but they include a detailed inventory of his thirteen tattoos including the location of each and a map of the Pacific showing the area covered by the Richmond during Snyder's tour of duty. Additionally all volumes bear front and back cover illustrations by Snyder. The Richmond was flagship of the U.S. Fleet's Submarine Force during 1938-40 and carried the Commander of the Scouting Force in the first half of 1941 while based in Hawaii. Later in that year and during the first year of the U.S.'s involvement in World War II she patrolled along the Latin American west coast and escorted convoys in the southeastern Pacific. The Richmond went to the North Pacific in January 1943 and was soon heavily engaged in the then-active Aleutians campaign. She bombarded Japanese-held Attu in February participated in the Battle of the Komandorski Islands on 26 March and took part in the recovery of Attu and Kiska in May and August 1943. Serving in the Aleutians area for the next two years Richmond's activities included active patrolling and beginning in February 1944 bombardments of the Kuril Islands. An extraordinary archive that combines a highly personal account of daily life on a combat ship with a detailed glimpse into the machinery of war. unknown

Hemingway Ernest
In Our Time
Paris: Three Mountains Press 1924. 30pp. First edition. One of 170 copies. Illustrated with a frontispiece author portrait by Henry Strater an American painter and fellow expatriate who became friends with Hemingway in Paris. This is the author's second book published in a smaller edition than his first a pamphlet of which 300 copies were printed. The sixth and final volume of a series of works by important modern writers edited by Ezra Pound titled "The Inquest into the State of Contemporary English Prose." The book contains eighteen terse untitled chapters which Edmund Wilson called "dry compressed little vignettes." A book with the same title was published in the U.S. the following year containing fifteen short stories for which the chapters in the present edition served mainly as introductory vignettes. Only two vignettes from this book were titled and used as full stories: "A Very Short Story" and "The Revolutionist." Most reviewers saw an affinity to Gertrude Stein in Hemingway's spare prose style and F. Scott Fitzgerald felt "a sort of renewal of excitement at these stories wherein Ernest Hemingway turns a corner into the street." In tan boards printed in red with a pattern of clippings from newspapers in several languages and the title in black. Slight wear to extremities else a very fine copy. Housed in a leather-backed slipcase with chemise which shows some wear. Grissom A.2. Three Mountains Press unknown

Psalm 67
N.p. Tegetmeier Dennis. A single sheet measuring 29 by 20 inches folded once. This large scale illustration features a priest at an altar with his followers. Their arms and faces are uplifted to the sky as they invoke the verse from Psalm 67 which appears as the companion text to this illustration: "Scatter thou the nations that delight in wars:/ ambassadors shall come out of Egypt:/ Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands to God." The artist demonstrates a lighter vein of the satirical wit he came to be associated with: men who symbolize "the nations that delight in wars" meet greet and shake hands as if to finalize treaties and seal political deals -- in stark contrast to the religious fervor above. Tegetmeier 1909-1987 became associated with the Roman Catholic circle of the sculptor-artist Eric Gill working with Gill in cutting and painting the Great War memorial at New College and eventually becoming his son-in-law. The back of the illusration is signed "E.G. Drawing" in what appears to be Eric Gill's script suggesting that this copy was a part of his personal collection. Minor overall soiling small closed tears to right margin bands of light toning top and bottom. unknown

Collodi Carlo
Le Avventure di Pinocchio: Storia di un Burattino
Florence: Felice Paggi 1883. Mazzanti Enrico. Small octavo. 236pp. iipp. of advertisements. First edition. The enduring children's classic about a mischievous marionette whose nose grows every time he tells a lie in the original Italian and wonderfully illustrated with a full-page frontispiece of the titular character as well as sixty-one additional woodcuts interspersed throughout the text. The first half of Pinocchio was originally published serially in the children's magazine Giornale per i Bambini from 1881 to 1883 and it is thought that the story was not intended primarily as children's literature as it did not end happily: Pinocchio was hanged from a tree for his various moral failings. It was at the urging of his publisher that author Carlo Collodi a pseudonym for Carlo Lorenzini added the second half of the book in which The Blue Fairy repeatedly comes to Pinocchio's rescue guiding him toward self-awareness and enabling his transformation from puppet to human. Popular in Italy at the time of its publication the book and its author went on to gain international acclaim when the story was translated into English in 1892. Pinocchio is still cherished to this day and has been the subject of numerous adaptations including popular versions by Disney and Steven Spielberg who used the story as the basis for his 2001 film AI. This very rare first edition of the book - only five copies have come up for auction in nearly twenty-five years - is bound in quarter red calf and marbled boards by Devauchelle. Raised bands divide the spine into compartments two of which bear the title and date in gilt. The endpapers are marbled. Housed in a clamshell box with marbled boards and red leather backing title and decorations on spine in gilt. Some toning and light staining to the interior a small closed tear to the margin of two pages and several unobtrusive stamped and handwritten ownership signatures otherwise a fine copy of this high spot of children's literature. Gottlieb/Pierpont Morgan Library 213; Osborne 2 p.1007. Felice Paggi unknown

Zulow Franz von
Die 12 Monate: Originalithographien
Vienna: Wiener Werkstatte 1912. Zulow Franz von. Quarto. 13ff. The Twelve Months of the Year. With 13 sheets each 29.7 x 22 cm compromising twelve color lithographs for the months of the year and one sheet depicting the four seasons. The prints are from illustrations by Franz von Zulow. Each of the monthly illustrations is compartmentalized into four images - two on the top and two on the bottom with a central picture surrounded by decorative geometric borders. Each sheet has the name of the month written in different stylized lettering. The cover sheet for the four seasons has four rectangular sections with geometric borders of circles diamonds flowers and sheaf's of wheat and likewise distinctive lettering for the season titles. The illustrations have a primitive childlike almost magical feeling as though in awe at the changing of the seasons and the passing of time. Each lithograph is the artist's imaginative response to the evocation of the months. For example March has romantic imagery in the form of cupids a dancing couple and a gentleman courting a lady. Von Zulow uses strong black outlines around dominant greens and reds with touches of beige white orange and yellow. Von Zulow 1883-1963 was a renowned and prolific Austrian painter graphic artist designer and muralist. From 1908 he was an illustrator and designer for the Wiener Werkstatte the Vienna Crafts Studio known for their modern designs at the turn of the twentieth century and for the superior quality of their craftsmanship. This series of lithographs was produced in 1912. Unbound as issued. The sheets are enclosed in a black-cloth portfolio with four fold-over sections. Inside covers are decorated with beautiful abstract washes of swirling brown green and olive colors. It is rare to find a set that has all of the sheets and is in good condition. A fine example.
