The album contains the frontispiece, one leaf with an ideogram, the colophon, one frame for kite, one leaf with title and two leaves with index engravings, the woodcut reproduction of Hokusai's famous view, 18 hand-painted sails on Japanese paper each in their black folder with the stylized design of the sail and the title. Exmouth Eng 1800. Very Good. 1 folded sheet creating 4 pages; handwritten letter on 2 pages signed 1 page blank address on the 4th page. Teignmouth notes that "Lady Teignmouth has lately presented me with another son." The engraved portrait drawn by J. Richmond engraved by W. Walker was published by Hatchard & Sons in 1843. John Shore 1st Baron Teignmouth 1751-1834 was an official of the East India Co. and served as Governor General of Bengal from 1793 to 1797; the following year he was created Baron Teignmouth. He was also the first president of the British and Foreign Bible Society. In Very Good Condition: letter is lightly creased; lightly soiled; print is lightly soiled in margins; indentation at upper edge; image is clean and crisp. unknown

Two friends a world apart with a mutual interest in and appreciation for the poetry of Edward Thomas have left us the great gift of this utterly charming work.<br/><br/>Philip Edward Thomas 1878-1917 was already an accomplished novelist and essayist when he turned to poetry. In 1915 at the age of 37 he enlisted in the British Army to fight in "The Great War" and was tragically killed in battle two years later during the Battle of Arras. <br/><br/>His youngest daughter Myfanwy receiving a letter in 1984 from a Mr. Masatsugu Ohtake who was an admirer of Thomas's work responded and the two began a correspondence that would last for almost 20 years as her last letter is dated November 28 2003. <br/><br/>Published privately by the Whittington Press who is renowned for their superb printing and binding; this one of fifteen deluxe copies bound in full Nigerian goatskin by The Fine Book Bindery with endpapers marbled by Christopher Rowlatt printed on Kozo hand-made paper for Masatsugu Ohtake by Patrick Randle with engravings by Hellmuth Weissenborn with errata slip loosely laid in at p. 26 with a signature and chop at the colophon which one presumes is that of Masatsugu Ohtake. <br/><br/>The twenty wood-engravings by Hellmuth Weissenborn 1898-1982 perfectly complement Myfanwy's description of the lovely English countryside around her which she frequently described to Ohtake; presented in the book in yellow and green and as monochrome in the extra suite of 20 loose plates.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full gold Nigerian goatskin with gilt lettering on the spine fore- and bottom edges uncut endpapers hand-marbled the twenty in-text wood-engravings throughout errata slip of delicate yellow hand-made paper loosely laid in at p. 26; hand-set Caslon printed on Kozo hand-made paper at Whittington Press for Masatsugu Ohtake small quarto size 10 1/8" by 6 1/4" pagination: i-x 1-34 colophon 35 blank 36 acknowledgement of editor 37; this one of the 15 deluxe copies total edition of 50 with an additional 50 copies also bound in full goatskin for the Whittington Press the chop and signature in Japanese on the colophon page. Accompanying the book is the extra suite of plates in black upon white heavy paper which measures 7 1/8" by 5 1/8" the engravings measure approximately 1.5" by 1.75" some smaller varying in size the plates enclosed within a wallet of brown laid paper with four flaps. The book and suite of plates presented in a slipcase of sturdy white cardboard covered in brown laid paper. <br/><br/>___CONDITION: Volume fine the leather binding clean and smooth straight corners without rubbing a strong square text block with solid hinges the interior is clean and bright and entirely free of prior owner markings; perhaps a hint of sunning to the spine else fine. The extra suite of prints and their wallet also fine; clean and utterly without wear. The slipcase near fine strong and sturdy clean with a few small sections of the brown paper lightly abraded. Morocco leather name plate on the front cover, stamped in gilt: "A. Thorvaldsen." Front board detached. Hardbound. Very good. Albert Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) was a Danish / Icelandic sculptor and artist. Thorvaldsen was an outstanding representative of the Neoclassical period in art, becoming the foremost artist in the field after the death of Antonio Canova in 1822. The poses and expressions of his figures are considered much more stiff and formal than those of Canova's. Thorvaldsen embodied the style of classical Greek art more than the Italian artist, he believed that only through the imitation of classical art pieces, could one become a truly great artist. Motifs for his works (reliefs, statues, busts, and illustrations) were drawn mostly from Greek mythology, as well as from works of classic art and literature. These engraved line illustrations also owe a great deal to the influence of John Flaxman (1755 - 1826). Very scarce. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! OVERSIZE 1/4

14 mounted plates in pencil, ink and colour wash, 2 of which are stuck to the outsides of the portfolio's protective boards with cloth ties. Various sizes, but mostly ca. 170 x 130 mm. Signed and captioned in English and Hungarian. Rare survival of a collection of sketches from the Russian POW camp in Peschanka, Siberia, all executed by an evidently accomplished, otherwise undocumented Hungarian artist (and soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army) who captured the conditions in and around the camp during the later years of the First World War. Thám's caricature-like style is marked by clear, precise outlines reminiscent of the contemporaneous work of Olaf Gulbransson and Eduard Thöny. The two larger sketches on the cover boards (measuring ca. 170 x 220 mm) show self-portraits of the artist, at work at oil paintings (one a landscape, the other a nude). The leaves within show prisoners climbing the bunk bed or resting in their crowded cots, marching through a snowed-in camp carrying heavy buckets, playing chess, etc.; some are captioned "Coming from the American Y.M.C.A. Kitchen", "The Red Cross library", or even show ladies in fur coats with an officer "at the exhibition", while a few others have Easter Greetings themes. - Peschanka is near Chita in the Transbaikalia region, on the Trans-Siberian Railway, 6035 kilometres from Moscow. While during the Great War conditions in the POW camps on the whole were vastly superior to those during WWII, thanks to the efforts of the Red Cross and inspectors from neutral countries, the situation in the Siberian camps was notoriously poor, and as many as a quarter of the 2.1 million Austro-Hungarian soldiers whom Russia held as prisoners of war did not survive. - Browned due to paper, with occasional edge flaws, but well preserved.

Charming caricature by the Venetian master depicting a liveried gentleman with épée and tricorne in profile, accentuating the figure's implausibly hollow back, grotesquely hooked nose, and impressive prognathism. The drawing can be attributed to Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo, the oldest son and student of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. - The drawing is very similar to the caricature of a gentleman with walking stick and tricorne that is held at the MET (Inv.: 37.165.68).
