2 miniatures. No place, [ca. 1805].
60 mm (diameter) and 62 x 75 mm. In their original brass and wooden frames. Half-length portrait of baron de La Châtre, the father of the publisher Maurice Lachâtre, with the decoration of the "Légion d'honneur" clearly visible on his robe. [LAFRERI - DUCHETTI - FLORINI - MAPS AND ENGRAVINGS - ITALY].
Large album with 16th-century maps and engravings of Italy.
Italy 1550. 17th-century gold-tooled brown calf sewn on 6 supports with the corresponding raised bands on the spine a red morocco title label on the spine with the title "Novissima urbis Romae descriptio" lettered in gold gold-tooled board edges. Large oblong folio ca. 59 x 42.3 cm. With 76 full-page engravings and 12 full-page etchings. Remarkable album with 77 beautiful examples of 16th-century Italian cartography all in very fine dark impressions. The collection includes plans of important Italian towns such as Rome Venice Genoa Naples Milan Florence Palermo Siena Bologna and Pisa as well as detailed views of individual buildings and monuments in Rome. They are engraved by several cartographers from the school of Antonio Lafreri 1512-1577 primarily Claudio Duchetti d. 1585 Matteo Florimi d. 1613 and Lafreri himself. Florimi's works are among the rarest of the Lafreri school map makers especially his Siena imprints of which several have here been included. In the middle of the 16th century Italy was the centre of map production and distribution in Europe. This industry primarily took place in Venice and Rome. The most notable of the publishers in Rome was Lafreri. His most important and most popular work is the Speculum Romanae magnificentiae a collection of plans an views of Rome's monuments; no two copies of the Speculum are the same. The present collection contains more than thirty plates from the Speculum. When Lafreri died his nephew Claudio Duchetti inherited the company. He continued to produce the Speculum plates but often made small adjustments and signed his own name at the bottom. Most of the Speculum plates in the present album are by Duchetti. After his death the copperplates were sold to other publishers such as Giovanni Orlandi before 1590-after 1640 who reissued them. The majority of the plates in the present album were printed by Orlandi in 1602.The album further contains 32 engraved city plans mostly of Italian towns although a few foreign cities are also included; one of the rarest is the view of Moscow which is also included here. The collection ends with a incomplete series of 11 etchings of landscapes and biblical scenes.A list of contents is available upon request. With the bookplate of Louis Routy de Charodon seigneur de Grésigny and Charodon 1710-1794 on the front pastedown and remnants of another bookplate above. The boards are somewhat scratched and stained the spine shows traces of use the edges of the boards have been professionally restored and the boards have been lengthened to fit the maps. The maps are slightly browned some are slightly foxed the first few maps have been mounted onto 17th-century leaves the longer maps are somewhat soiled on the fore edge three maps are restored at the fore edge and one at the bottom edge some maps have been cut slightly short. Otherwise in good condition.l Cf. Parshall P. "Antonio Lafreri's "Speculum Romanae magnificentiae"" in: Print Quarterly vol. 23 1 2006 pp. 3-28. hardcover

[Mary Magdalene].
Coloured and "dressed" devotional print of Mary Magdalene. Probably France, mid-18th century.
255 x 180 mm. Copperprint engraving, cut, hand-coloured and dressed with several fabric fragments, some with metallic threads, metallic lace details, and ground glass. Stitched at an early date to a ruled paper mount. Later giltwood frame and glazing with framer’s label ("Collard Doreur sur bois. Versailles’", ca. 1830-40). Striking and well-preserved example of a so-called "dressed print", based on a devotional engraving of Mary Magdalene by the German engraver and publisher Martin Engelbrecht (1684-1756), dating to the mid-18th century. The materials and style of the adornments point to the 18th century, though a later reuse of older fabrics cannot be ruled out. As often, the dressing has been ingeniously applied both under and over the surface of the original engraving. The penitent Mary Magdalene has been modified by being pasted onto glazed paper, producing a dramatic black-sky background, her body is embellished with three different brocade fabrics (two with metallic threads), and the print was further enhanced with hand-colouring, some metallic lace and ground glass. The saint is characterized by her traditional attributes of a cross, a book, a myrrh jar, a straw mat, and a skull, while her left foot rests on a globe or orb. The precious clothes that were added to Mary Magdalene, who is usually just covered by her long open hair as an expression of her ascetism and atonement, almost transforms her into a celestial Mary, thus altering the meaning of the engraving. - The fashion for dressing prints existed probably from the beginning of printed illustrations themselves, though it was a widespread, predominantly female recreation, especially in nunneries and convents, during the 17th and 18th centuries. Dressed prints were often overlooked by art historians and, due to their fragile nature, are rarely preserved in such good condition.

One of the two female artists represented here. Born in Chicago Illinois. "Judith Jaidinger's obsession with cutting began in her 1960s student days at the School of the Art Institute and is linked to her equally long frankly sensuous relationship with boxwood. She was introduced to both in an engraving class taught by British-born print-master Adrian Troy. "At the same time printing industry technology had moved on supplanting woodblock engravings with line drawings and photography. 'A dying art' Jaidinger says. It was also a seriously slumping industry. But in the 1960s in Chicago hub of an enormous catalog business there were still a few commercial wood-engraving establishments turning out the precise detailed images more typical of the previous century. One of them Sander Wood Engraving on Dearborn Street was where Professor Troy a committed modernist sent his students to buy the best material: rare English-grown boxwood blocks. "'He warned us' Jaidinger recalls 'If you go to Sander and buy your wood from them don't look at what those engravers are doing. I don't want you to be influenced by them.' "That made it irresistible." - Reader- Chicago's alternative nonprofit newsroom <br /> <br /> -Stefan Martin 1936-1994. Born in Elgin Illinois and a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago. [MODE]
Almanach des Modes et de la Parure
1804 Couverture rigide Paris, Marcilly, 1804.

Early watercoloured drawing of a grocer selling his produce in the port of Naples, at the beginning of the main pier leading up to the old lighthouse (lanterna del molo), with Vesuvius in the distance giving off a faint cloud of smoke. [Napoleon].
[Series of 3 coloured jigsaw puzzles]: La veille d'Austerlitz. La Nuit de Lodi. Clémence de l'empéreur. Paris, Ulysse, [ca. 1815].
Each puzzle measures 195 x 245 mm. Each puzzle with an engraved plate mounted on thin wood, coloured by a contemporary hand and cut to form a jigsaw puzzle, with engraved caption and short description below the image. Stored in the original cardboard box with an etched and engraved sample plate for a fourth puzzle (with caption "Équité de l'empereur") on the top, coloured by a contemporary hand, and an embossed gilt-paper border. Each puzzle with the original pink paper wrap-around slip preserved. A fine and colourful set of jigsaw puzzles depicting scenes from the life of Napoleon Bonaparte. Two of the puzzles and the sample plate have the address "Ulysse Paris" engraved in the image. Each puzzle has 20 pieces: the first depicts Napoleon calmly sleeping in a chair after having given orders to his generals on the eve of the battle of Austerlitz (1 Dec. 1805); the second shows Napoleon addressing an exhausted soldier - a scene from the battle of Lodi on 10 May 1796, fought between Napoleon's forces and the Austrian rear guard commanded by Johann Beaulieu. The third puzzle shows Napoleon as merciful emperor, receiving the thankful wife and children of a Prussian lord accused of conspiracy, whom he pardoned. The puzzle matching the scene depicted on the top of the box is not included. A few pieces cracked at thin spots; box slightly defective with traces of handling and browned. A good set.

[Napoleon].
Portrait of Napoleon Bonaparte as First Consul of the French Republic. N. p., ca. 1800-1804.
33 x 23 cm (sheet size). Gouache on paper. Heightened in gold and silver. Charming, if amateurish, anonymous representation of Napoleon Bonaparte as Consul, based on reproductions of an original portrait by the general and military painter Louis Albert Guislain Bacler d'Albe (1761-1824). The official engraved version of d'Albe's portrait by Michelangelo Mercoli the younger circulated widely in Europe and was frequently reproduced and varied. In the gouached copy at hand, Napoleon's typical bicorne hat was added, either based on the concrete model or as an original idea of the copyist. This artistically rather unhappy addition is an interesting reminder of the immediate iconicity of Napoleon's hat. The inscription "N. Bonaparte P.er Consul de la République Française" corresponds exactly to Mercoli's print. - Well preserved. With minor tears and browning to the margins.

[Nature printing].
Botanical manuscript on paper. Austria, 2nd half of the 19th c.
Large 4to (225 x 268 mm). 224 unnumbered ff. with more than 250 page-sized plant illustrations, mostly in a mixed techique of nature printing and coloured drawings. Also includes 3 coloured engraved plates and 1 tipped-in coloured lithograph. Later half calf over marbled boards with stamped title to spine. An uncommon collection of talented botanical illustrations, many based on nature prints amplified and coloured in various techniques. The plates show mainly medicinal and culinary plants (belladonna, calendula, tobacco, eggplant "from Arabia" etc.), frequently with blossoms and fruits. All plates are identified in Latin, many have additional notes in German stating the plants' flowering season and place of origin. Some plates are signed "G.F.", a fact which has suggested attribution to the Austrian naturalist Georg von Frauenfeld (1807-73), one of the leading scientists on the Novara expedition (cf. Reiss 77 [2001], lot 77). Frauenfeld himself published a book on the algae of the Dalmatian coast, illustrated by nature printing (cf. Fischer, Naturselbstdruck, no. 72). Includes three engravings and one lithograph from other botanical works. - Occasional light browning and fingerstaining; a few slight edge defects, but well preserved altogether.

Samoa - Incidents of the Recent Fighting Over Kingship and the Philippines - Three Instances of the Superb Courage of the American Troops Caption Titles.
New York.: Harper's Weekly. July 11899. Three photographic prints each approx 11 x 20 cms and three black and white engravings together 33.5 x 20.4 cms all captioned printed on two conjoined newspaper leaves pp 645-648 41 x 28.5 cms the associated articles: "Samoa in War-Time" in full with a cameo portrait of the Chief Justice of Samoa and "The Philippine Revolt." partial with a small sketch map of Malolos printed on the verso central fold a few small edge tears and faint toning but in good condition. Malcolm Ross the author and photographer of "Samoa in War-time" was a New Zealand freelance journalist and war correspondent for the New Zealand press as well as the Melbourne Age. In 1899 he spent three months in Samoa covering the clashes for the leadership of the colony that followed the death of Malietoa Laupepa the incumbent chief at the time. <br>Unusual late 19th Century coverage of Samoa especially by a New Zealand photojournalist. <br> <br>The second spread with the incomplete accompanying article by Joh F. Bass a "Special Correspondent of "Harper's Weekly" on "The Philippine Revolt" has an unsurprising pro-American tone: the armed conflict between the First Philippine Republic and the United States 1899-1902 was clearly viewed by the United States as an insurrection rather than as a continuation of the struggle for independence by Filipino nationalists that had begun in 1896 with the Philippine Revolution. . [Performance – Philadelphia – Nineteenth Century – Engravings – Punch and Judy] Norton, IT I T
Mister Punchinello! A Celebrated Glee Composed & Arranged for the Piano Forte and Dedicated to the Murphy Club
Philadelphia 1829. Folio 2 pp. Tear to title page some chips to margins with loss good condition overall. An early Philadelphia theatrical music imprint by I. T. Norton credited on the sheet as “I. T. Norton R.A.M. Composer & Director of the Music to the Chestnut St. Theatre.†Norton served as musical director at the Second Chestnut Street Theatre during the late 1820s a period when the house mounted a mixture of melodrama burletta opera excerpts and popular entertainments requiring resident musical supervision and arrangement. Theatre directors of music routinely composed incidental numbers glees and topical songs for stage performance and subsequent publication bridging the repertory of live performance and domestic music-making.<br /> <br /> Mister Punchinello! draws upon the well-known Punch and Judy puppet tradition. The text is lyrically straightforward built around the repeated refrain “Oh mamma I must be married to Mister Punchinello†suggesting a number intended for accessible vocal delivery rather than elaborate dramatic structure. The R.A.M. designation appended to Norton’s name—presented without elaboration on the imprint—appears as a professional credential typical of early nineteenth-century music publishing though he very well may have never attended the Royal Academy of Music.<br /> <br /> A representative survival from the intersection of Philadelphia theatre culture and early American sheet music production. OCLC locates about a dozen copies across multiple entries. unknown
