The Gendarme of Champignol Le gendarme de Champignol Archive of photographs and keybook contact prints for the 1959 film
Paris: Cinedis 1959. Collection of 269 vintage black-and-white photographs for the 1959 French film. <br /> <br /> The collection consists of two unique and complimentary pieces one being a film still keybook with 68 contact prints of small format negatives most with 12 images per print amounting to over 800 images captured. Nearly all images with series number bordering the image and credits at the top for photo laboratory Tele-Photo film studio Cinedis film title and photographer Rosselle housed in a 2-ring paper binder with original French titles. The other piece is nearly 170 smaller photographs elegantly presented mounted with cello tape on thick stock in a "Lavis aquarelle" brand spiral bound notebook with maroon faux leather front wrapper. Series numbers and small "x" annotations in manuscript ink on the pages several with small white borders and several with series number on the verso in manuscript pencil. Photos without borders also have series number at the edges etched in the original film negative before photo development as on the keybook prints. Nearly all photographs have numerical annotations in manuscript pencil on the versos a few smaller photographs have rubber-stamps on the versos crediting Richard Pierre film titles director Bastia and costars Alfred Adam and Noel Roquevart. Also included are 27 loose photographs a few with rubber-stamps on the verso crediting starring actors and French film titles and a small press packet from Cinedis detailing film credits synopsis and star biographies. <br /> <br /> Starring actors Richard and Pierre are amply represented in the collection and seen in nearly every image mostly in their official uniforms. Actress Zuber is equally present in striking high-contrast images cuddling bunnies fishing at a river and wielding a rifle. The notebook depicts images seen in the film while the keybook depicts on-the-set sequences test shots candid moments and images of the crew; the loose photos show both candid and action shots. <br /> <br /> An expansive perspective of a little seen comedy about a gendarme who travels to a small town looking for a disappeared woman a town known for its distrust of police officers. Director Bastia was an assistant director in the 1940s and 1950s when he worked almost exclusively with director Jean Boyer until his debut with "Nous autres à Champignol" 1957 the first in this series involving gendarmes and Champignol followed by this film and finally "The Boss of Champignol" 1966. <br /> <br /> Photographs in large quarto notebook 3.5 x 4.75 inches keybook contact prints 8.25 x 10.5 inches 2-hole punched several trimmed and loose photos range from 4.75 x 6.75 inches to 7 x 9.25 inches. Action sequences men in military regalia and romantically charged images of Belmondo and Cardinale with most representing Belmondo either charming people or dueling with swords. Housed in original brown envelope noted as "CARTOUCHE" on the flap. Numerical annotations in manuscript pencil on the versos. Also included are a few leaves of French press material on stationery from the film's distributor Cinedis. <br /> <br /> A riveting Peplum sword-and-sandal swashbuckler set in 1700s France where a gang member named Cartouche Belmondo forms his own band of knaves deciding his former gang to be too unethical. He steals from the rich to give to the poor enlists in the army to escape capture and meets Venus Cardinale a gypsy prisoner who joins his new gang. Venus' love proves fatal and Cartouche rolls her into a lake in a stolen carriage vowing revenge knowing it will likely lead him to the gallows. <br /> <br /> Belmondo and Cardinale's interaction is palpable but they would star in only two other films together Mauro Balognini's "La viaccia" 1961 and José Giovanni's "Scoumoune" 1972. <br /> <br /> Photos 6.75 x 9 inches. Martres Martin was a prolific French actress who was later involved in press relations at Cinedis a notable film agency in operation since the Silent Film era. <br /> <br /> Airman Adrien Dufourquet Belmondo is in Paris on shore leave eager to see his Agnes Dorléac. When he finally sees her only briefly before she's kidnapped and held for ransom by a treasure-hungry family friend. A James Bond spoof in the wake of Belmondo's swashbuckling success "Cartouche" 1962 opposite Claudia Cardinale with puzzle solving murder in Brasilia art thieves and a pursuit to find sacred Amazon treasure. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Writing Story and Screenplay: Written Directly for the Screen 1965 and winner of a New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Foreign Language Film 1964. <br /> <br /> Members of the cast and crew are featured throughout the collection including director de Brocca who earlier worked under directors Claude Chabrol and François Truffaut Belmondo cameramen and an extensive look at the scenery of Brazil and Paris. Boats racing Belmondo dangling from a speeding car and languid down times as cast and crew break for naps in the shade photographer Trigo's often provocative angles capture the director in dimly lit noirish scenarios and a glimpse of the action-packed thrill-ride of shooting a Bond spoof with elements of MacGuyver. Bardot" the other being nearly 100 smaller photographs elegantly presented mounted on thick stock in a "Lavis aquarelle" brand spiral bound notebook with maroon faux leather front wrapper and an affixed paper title label featuring the film's poster art of Bardot. Several photographs with series number on the verso in manuscript pencil a few with rubber-stamps crediting film title and starring actors and photos in notebook numbered at the edges prior to being printed. <br /> <br /> Bardot is seen in nearly every image highlighting an array of hairstyles and costumes scenes in the pilot's cockpit snacking between takes dancing being curious at galas. Contact sheets glamour portraits of Madeleine Lebeau action sequences of bar fights and on-the-set images are equally prominent. Negatives show costume design illustrations for men in military uniforms. <br /> <br /> Boisrond's fourth directorial credit is a comedy starring Bardot as the flirtatious daughter of the prime minister of France who marries a member of the cabinet Vidal who happens to be a womanizer.
