BUtterfield 8 Original photograph from the 1960 film
N.p.: Afton-Linebrook 1960. Vintage studio still photograph from the 1960 film.

Extremely watchable trash a big-budget film with lowdown agenda and the last film in which Elizabeth Taylor who won an Oscar for her performance could have been accurately described as young and radiant. Something of an American answer to De Sica's "Madame De." with the object in question being a fur coat rather than a pair of earrings.

Shot on location in New York.

8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus with extensive annotations to the verso in red felt-tipped ink blue ink and manuscript graphite. Afton-Linebrook unknown

John Cassavetes (director, screenwriter); Robert Alan Arthur (screenwriter); Lelia Goldoni, Ben Carruthers, Hugh Hurd (starring)
Shadows Original photograph from the 1959 film
N.p.: Lion International 1959. Vintage studio still photograph from the 1959 film.

The first film by Cassavetes for which he raised the entirety of the production budget himself the story of three African American siblings in Harlem two of whom often pass for white. Begun as an acting exercise in a workshop Cassavetes was conducting with Burt Lane the story was originally filmed in 1958 with completely improvised dialogue and action based on scene outlines created by Cassavetes.

After the film was poorly received at its three initial screening by just about everyone Cassavetes knew he reworked the ideas into a more traditional script with screenwriter Robert Alan Arthur and reshot the film replacing between half and two thirds of the original footage and dramatically altering the story. Released in 1959 this version better reflected his vision for the film and received a critics award when shown at the Venice Film Festival the following year.

A watershed moment in American independent films heralding not just the arrival of a new iconoclastic director but the birth of an entire movement.

Shot on location in New York.

8 x 10 inches. Near Fine. Lion International unknown

The Sun Also Rises Four British front-of-house cards from the 1957 film
Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox 1957. Four British front-of-house cards from the 1957 film.

The story of a motley assortment of expatriates who travel to Pamplona to attend the running of the bulls it reflected Hemingway's own abiding fascination with bullfighting. Featuring a standout performance by Errol Flynn as the hedonistic hard-drinking burned-out Mike Campbell.in other words himself. Though considered one of the most honest "big" film adaptations of its era due mainly to the screenplay by novelist and Hemingway acolyte Peter Viertel the author is said to have walked out only 25 minutes into the premier. Zanuck's first independent production after his departure from Fox. The snipe on this photograph's verso suggests that Zanuck also had a hand in directing certain Parisian scenes as is depicted here.

Shot on location in France Mexico and Spain.

8 x 10 inches. Furia De Juventud The Subterraneans Collection of 6 Spanish language lobby cards from the 1960 US film
Beverly Hills CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer MGM 1960. Collection of six full-color vintage lobby cards from the 1960 film.

From one perspective a fairly one-dimensional representation—perhaps even a caricature—of Beat culture but culturally fascinating in that it was made at the height of the Beat era with A-list talent by a top studio and until Walter Salles' 2012 adaptation of "On the Road" was the only feature-length film ever made from a Kerouac novel. Kerouac was paid $15000 by MGM for the rights to the book and bought his first home with the proceeds on Long Island.

A film that rarely screened today and has never been available on any kind of home viewing format. While its perspective on the actual Beat scene may be skewed or wildly misinterpreted it is nonetheless important as an interpretation of Kerouac's world from the outside looking in.

Shot on location in San Francisco California.

17 x 13 inches. Very Good with pin holes and a manuscript ink notation to the recto of one lobby card. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM] unknown
