Seven years after its release Hungarian playwright and concentration camp survivor Ferenc Herczeg sued MGM for plagiarizing his 1903 play "Seven Sisters." Paramount legally adapted the play into a film in 1915. However during the 1941 production of "Seven Sweethearts" Herczeg was imprisoned within a Nazi concentration camp. Subsequently he only learned of the film's existence years after his release. <p>Blonay Switzerland. April 28 1976. 1976. Fine. - Over 160 words typed on his personal 11-5/8 inch high by 8-1/4 inch wide stationery with his Swiss address centered at the top. Not having heard from his friend New York City Center producer Jean Dalrymple about producing his play Norman Krasna writes "I have a letter from Jose Ferrer who informs me between barbs of witty abuse that he has had some communications with Sylvia Miles." . "I would suspect at this moment the prospect of getting her are fifty-fifty. She hasn't said yes she hasn't said no which is practically a lyric from a famous Jerome Kern show." He goes on to write that he understands if she hasn't been able to get any backing "we are in a most peculiar business at a difficult time and it is perfectly all right if you pass us by. Sad but all right." Signed "Norman". Folded for mailing with a pencil line indicating that Jean has read the letter else fine.</p><p>Together with a retained copy of Jean Dalrymple's reply dated June 19 1976. Having been away Jean replies "I have been in Russia for a while making a film on ballet. and so I am terribly late in replying to your very very nice letter." She goes on to say that "Unfortunately Sylvia Miles after first saying she was VERY interested turned us down." "At the moment I can't think of anyone who is 'just right' and the play MUST have that 'just right' actress! Ah. Judy couldn't you return for a bit" She concludes with wam regards ". and maybe you have a new play easier to cast"</p><p>The American screenwriter playwright producer and film director Norman Krasna 1909-1984 was known for his screwball comedies based on a case of mistaken identity. He wrote several successful Broadway plays including "Dear Ruth" and "John Loves Mary" and directed 3 films "The Ambassador's Daughter" "The Big Hangover" and "Princess O'Rourke" all of which he also wrote and was nominated 4 times for screenwriting Academy Awards winning once for "Princess O'Rourke".</p><p>The recipient Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Carey Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jos Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. TVS Limited Shepperton Studios. Dated 9 September 1986. Typed screenplay 103pp. 8vo. In good condition lightly aged and worn. Paginated to 99 but with the pagination heavily disrupted by the addition and removal of a large number of pages of revisions on pink or blue paper each amended leaf dated at the head. Held together with two metal studs in yellow card binding with windowpane for title. Title-page states 'MANDELA by Ronald Harwood 9 September 1986' without further details. Loosely inserted is a six-page 'Call Sheet No. 32' dated 17 September 1986 which names as the 'Production Base': 'TVS Limited Room 5 The Old House Shepperton Studios Studios Road Shepperton Middlesex'. The call sheet includes a page of 'Call Sheet Notes' and another page headed 'Movement Order No. 1 London'. The script was clearly used by a member of the continuity or props department as it has individual names highlighted in green and properties highlighted in orange with a few notes including dating of some scenes in blue ink. Note inside front cover: 'White Austin TJ 16721 Mandelas Sc41'. Glover was riding high on the success of 'Lethal Weapon' but 'Mandela' was not well received. It was accorded two unenthusiastic reviews in The Times: one by Peter Waymark on 24 September 1987 'A black and white tale' and the other the following day by Martin Cropper 'Nelson deserves better than this'. His entry in the Oxford DNB ends with this assessment: ‘His books were best-sellers for fifty years and the films made from them notably The Drum 1938 for which he wrote his own scenario and The Four Feathers 1939 were among the most popular in their time.’ 1p 12mo. In good condition lightly aged. Folded twice for postage. The valediction is in Mason's autograph: 'Yours sincerely / A. E. W. Mason'. Frank Capra thanks the recipient for his "cheery letter with so many button-popping comments about my book and films. They are as welcome as heady wine." The book to which he refers is his autobiography "The Name Above the Title: An Autobiography" published in 1971. He goes on to write that "It was particularly delightful to hear that you are so knowledgeable about the Bell Science Series. Those films are my own personal pets." Signed in full "Frank Capra". Folded for mailing else fine.</p><p>The Italian-American film director Frank Capra 1897-1991 won 3 Oscars for Best Director. Among his films are "It Happened One Night" "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town" "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" and "It's a Wonderful Life". The Bell Science Series consisted of nine television specials made for the AT&T Corporation and were initially broadcast between 1956 and 1964. She is perhaps best known for her long collaboration with Merchant Ivory Productions made up of director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant. After meeting Cyrus Jhabvala in England she married him and moved to India in 1951; Jhabvala was an Indian-Parsi architect. The couple lived in New Delhi and had three daughters. Jhabvala began then to elaborate her experiences in India and wrote novels and tales on Indian subjects. She wrote a dozen novels 23 screenplays and eight collections of short stories and was made a CBE in 1998 and granted a joint fellowship by BAFTA in 2002 with Ivory and Merchant. She is the only person to have won both a Booker Prize and an Oscar. John Swope August 23 1908 - May 11 1979 was a photographer for Life and a commercial pilot who trained United States Army Air Force pilots during World War II. His interest in photography began when he brought a camera to a yacht race from Los Angeles to Hawaii in 1936. Together with Leland Hayward and John H. Connelly he co-founded Southwest Airways no connection to the present day Southwest Airlines a company that developed the Thunderbird Fields which trained thousands of military pilots during the Second World War. He was married to actress Dorothy McGuire in 1943 until his death on May 11 1979. This book is a film maker's response in print and not on celluloid to what is called Royal India--land of Maharajas. It contains the overflow from the author's films in which Royal India appears. It is a collection of photographs anecdotes and other items which the author believes are worth saving. When India became independent in 1947 the princeses were guaranteed their titles properties and certain privileges. But more and more their special status came to be seen as an anachronism and it has now been legally abolished. For the princes it was like the French Revolution except that none of them went to the guillotine; they merely became private citizens. Many of these former rulers are still doing very well. This is Jack Hirshberg’s copy with the iconic film publicist’s signature or printed name on the first page of some of the revisions.<br /> <br /> Quarto: 292 pp. A rainbow script photomechanically reproduced on the recto of standard pink green white yellow and blue stock. Fair on slightly-aged and worn paper. A total of five typed 8vo pages and two autograph 8vo and two autograph 12mo pages. Four of the lettters have 'The Fol-de-Rols' printed on the letterhead. Dealing with practical everyday theatre matters with Newman writing for example on 19 November 1955: 'I have bought a few costume from the "Punch" Revue which died an early death at the Duke of York's theatre last Saturday. I made room for them in one of the cupboards in the corridor by moving a set of old Fol dresses into the large crate alongside which was only half filled with dogs and hard props.' A vintage original Finnish cinema-foyer POSTER for the first screening in Finland March 1965 of the celebrated film Zorba the Greek starring Anthony Quinn and Alan Bates. A rolled poster i.e. no folding creases in Fine condition approximate size is 23.5 inches by 16 inches standard Finnish A2 format. With minor signs of use: one very short tear to right edge and similar to bottom edge neither immediately noticeable. Minor print-soiling to verso where there is also a small pen inscription of film-title and date. Minor handling creases to the corners and some minor dings along the left edge of the poster suggesting that it may have been mounted with clips - there are neither pin-holes nor tape residue marks. In fantastic clean condition otherwise Fine or better. Artist-signed in the plate. Norman Krasna writes to Jean Dalrymple about his latest play "Hold the presses." he says having rethought the ending. "I had a long searching session with the muse and also a critique from a friend and the three of us have come to the conclusion that the ending is not right." Feeling that his original ending seemed to imply that the girl settled for marriage "as she hasn't got the ability to be a star". "People don't go to the theatre to accept resignation. I prefer the girl on her way to be a star and have the marriage too." Signed "Norman". An apparent phone number is penned at top left of the letter and another spelled out in French at top right. The letter is further briefly annotated on the verso. The top edge of the page is slightly creased and the letter is folded for mailing. In good condition though somewhat grubby with 'SACHA GUITRY in 1939' in manuscript written in white ink on Guitry's collar. A striking head and shoulders portrait shot from below out of doors of Guitry staring intently ahead and to the left. He wears a white panama hat with black band a patterned tie dark shirt and grey jacket with specks. Gum marks from previous mounting around edges of reverse. See Images. 1939. unknown

Los Angeles: Betnic Productions Inc 1972. Wraps. Very good. Revised Draft of this unproduced screenplay. Veteran producer Frank P. Rosenberg hired Ernest Tidyman 1928-84 to adapt Jeanne Rejaunier's best-selling novel which deals with the glamourous sometimes sleazy life of topflight New York fashion models. Tidyman began work on the project in 1970 immediately prior to writing the screenplays for Shaft 1971 based on his 1970 novel and French Connection 1971 which established him as one of the top screenwriters in the business. The production was ultimately abandoned. However this draft includes casting notes with potential candidates for each role listed in order of preference - for instance the actresses targeted for the role of Charlene include Eleanor Parker Bette Davis Joan Crawford Susan Hayward Ava Gardner Rita Hayworth Anne Baxter and Angela Lansbury - as well as brief bios of the preferred producer Gordon Oliver director Gordon Douglas and production manager Nate Barrager. Green titled vinyl wrappers noted as "Revised Draft" on the title page which is dated November 8 1972 and includes credits for Tidyman Rejaunier and Betnic Productions. 169 mimeographed pages with the last page numbered 154. The contents are crisp and clean. Some very light edgewear to the wrappers which are bound with two brads with the remnants of a paper label to the spine; otherwise very good. In the 1940s Guest wrote the lyrics to several songs by the American composer Manning Sherwin 1902-1974 several of them for his comedy 'I'll be your Sweetheart' 1945 but he is not known to have written any music himself. No record has been found of the present item but it presumably dates from the same period. It is 4pp. 4to. On bifolium of printed music paper. In good condition lightly aged and worn with central vertical fold. The title is on the cover: 'â€Swell†Lyrics and music by Val Guest'. There is an illegible name lightly written at top right in another hand. The music is neatly written out in ink. The lyrics are not present except for one phrase in pencil 'You sent me a note and beneath it you wrote it's been swell'. No date or place. [London, 1940s?] unknown

Other than 'The Lavender Hill Mob' for which he won an Oscar Clarke's screenplays include 'The Blue Lamp' and 'The Titchfield Thunderbolt'. For the recipient Barbara Kaye Barbara Kenrick Gowing 1908-1998 writer bookseller and wife of Percy Muir see her obituary by Nicolas Barker in the Independent 12 March 1998. The present letter was written a few days after Clarke's appearance on 31 October on the television programme 'This Is Your Life'. 2pp 12mo. In fair condition aged and worn. Folded once. The letter begins: 'Dear Barbara Many thanks for your kind letter. That certainly was a shock they gave me last Monday! Shirley Long was there in addition to Teddy Wass - it was he who dug up the old “Answers†articles for reproduction. But I wish there had been a little more flavour of those good old Twenties. They went to see Bobby Cooper and he tells me took copious notes from him then for space reasons had to leave out all his reminiscences.' He remembers 'all the incidents' she mentions 'except the girl in the orchestra so I presume she must have been a virgin or she would have registered better'. He discusses the marriage of Dorothy Hargreaves and Humphrey Bradney before turning to his son Michael who 'was recently taken to a dance in Suffolk while staying with friends there and found the hostess to be my old girl friend Betty Hand. Since computerization ordering is a longwinded business but there's reasonable hope they'd arrive before the Christmas post.' He gives instruction concerning payment and postage. He makes a suggestion if McPherson should 'at any point in the future be tempted to buy my first book of short stories PENNINE TALES' go for the paperback which is cheaper and 'much better edited'. The letter ends: 'One thing about the new computerized typesetting you can correct an error or an author's gaffe with a touch of the button instead of having to reset the whole page for one typo.' No address letterhead reads 'Memorandum from Michael Winner'. Dated 25 November 1969. 1p. 4to. In fair condition lightly aged and a little ruckled at edges. Winner's signature in blue ink is somewhat stylised. The document deals with eleven points raised at the meeting which relates to a film project which was not realised the first of which gives a feel of the tone: '1. We could do something in scene 305 with LEONARD who is not too full of character at this point. This applies also through that section to the end of scene 308. In this scene Leonard is a little too on-the-ball and decisive. He should be more concerned with JUANNA's feelings.' From the Jack Pulman papers. The Writers' Guild of Great Britain 430 Edgware Road London. Two items on Pulman's letterhead 31 Steele's Road London. 1968. Six items relating to Pulman's arbitration including 'a careful breakdown by him of scene continuity of the Bourguignon script the Duncan script and the final shooting script' these three breakdowns Items Two to Four below totalling 8pp. In his four-page arbitration Pulman gives a detailed account of the process of the film's composition of all the more interest as coming from a master screenwriter and contemporary. All six items in good condition lightly aged. ONE: Carbon copy of Pulman's signed four-page 'Arbitration - "GIRL ON A MOTORCYLE" Writers involved - S. Bourguignon Ronald Duncan Jack Cardiff Gillian Freeman'. A full description of the case in fourteen numbered sections giving a great deal of detail regarding the composition of the script beginning with a list of six 'writing stages' and Pulman's reasons for reaching his conclusion. He describes the film as 'a story done very much in the style of “Un Homme et Une Femme†using a very similar continuity of flashback and throught sic track'. On reading through the material presented to him Pulman found that 'one impression emerged clearer than ever – that the final shooting script 6 differed very little from Bourguignon's adaptation which Cardiff says could “never be used on a professional basis.†To see whether this impression was correct or not I made a careful breakdown of scene continuity of the Bouguignon script the Duncan script and the final shooting script and compared them. These are enclosed with this opinion.' The are Items Two to Four below. He does not 'believe that anyone comparing these breakdowns could come to any conclusion other than that the screenplay credit belongs niether sic to Cardiff nor Duncan but solely to Bourguignon'. Since Bourguignon 'seems to be claiming no credit' he proposes to amend the credit to: 'SCREENPLAY by S. Bourguignon. Additional Scenes by Ronald Duncan and Jack Cardiff.' TWO: Two-page typescript headed 'Continuity - BOURGIGNON sic'. Twenty-four points beginning with 'Rebecca rises from her husband's bed puts on her black suit takes her motorcycle and sets off to see her lover Daniel.' Last point: '24. She leaves the cafe and gets on her motor cycle again. She is going very fast. She is killed in a collision.' THREE: Three-page typescript headed 'Ronald DUNCAN - Continuity. Second Draft'. Twenty-seven numbered points beginning with: '1. Rebecca rises from her husband's bed takes her black suit and motorcycle and sets off for her lover.' Last point: '27. She leaves the grass verge and drives on. She arrives at Daniels. He is not present but she sees the photo frame this time with the woman in it which is sic obviously always takes out when he visits her. She walks out of his life leaving the motor cycle there.' FOUR: Three-page typescript headed 'Continuity - Final Script Jack Cardiff'. Thirty-one points beginning with: '1. Rebecca asleep with her husband has a dream about him and Daniel.' Last point: '31. She leaves the grass verge and gets back on the road again. Thinking of Daniel she has a collision with a car and is killed.' FIVE: Copy of typed 'postscript to my opinion dated 29th April 1968' by Pulman. On his letterhead. Dated 6 May 1968. 1p. 4to. Amending his proposed credit following a discussion 'at some length with Dick Sharples' to 'Screenplay by - RONALD DUNCAN Adapted by - JACK CARDIFF'. Maschwitz wrote the lyrics to 'A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square' and 'These Foolish Things' and was nominated for an oscar for co-writing the screenplay of 'Goodbye Mr Chips'. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 12mo. Twenty-nine lines of text. In fair condition lightly aged. Folded once. Maschwitz begins by congratulating him 'on a really enthralling book! Loved every page of it!' With reference to Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree he explains that the previous day he 'had a talk with old Dennis Grayson who with Mrs Corey Wright is one of Tree's executors. He told me that they had recently opened a dusty old Pall Mall Safe Deposit box containing masses of records etc of His Majesty's Theatre - the "complete works" from 1897 to 1917 and there was so much of interest among them'. Included is an item relating to Claude Rains: 'a call boy's note book with C. Rains written inside it in a boyish hand'. Grayson 'wondered whether you would be interested in doing a book on the Theatre. Of course it wouldn't make anything as grand as Drury Lane but certainly something grander than Daly's'. He makes a few suggestions about topics MP might wish to include in the book including the play 'Balalaika' with 'the cops coming for the backer on the opening night'. If MP is interested 'Grayson who lives up North and comes to town occasionally would be delighted to lunch you and tell you what he has. Let me know and I'll fix it'. MacQueen-Pope does not appear to have taken Grayson up on his offer unless the letter dates from before the 1947 publication of 'Carriages at Eleven'. 8 September [no year]. Provenance: purchased at auction from large collection. From Wikipedia: MacKinlay Kantor was an American journalist novelist and screenwriter. He wrote more than 30 novels several set during the American Civil War and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1956 for his 1955 novel "Andersonville". He also wrote the novel "Gettysburg" set during the Civil War. Kantor's poem "Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg" published in 1933 memorializes Lincoln's November 1863 visit to the ceremonies dedicating the new Soldiers' National Cemetery at Gettysburg where he Lincoln gave "a few appropriate remarks" that live on in history as the Gettysburg Address. Kantor's poem ends with a few lines that portray Lincoln's humanity as perceived by a dog: "I was a dog of Gettysburg. I trotted near the train And nosed among the officers who kicked me to my pain. The bottom edge of the paper is darkened with slight darkening to the other edges and the bottom right corner is lightly creased. There is a very light vertical crease to the left side. Very good. <p>Author playwright and screenwriter Frederic Arnold Kummer 1873-1943 began his career as a civil engineer before turning to writing full-time in 1907. For much of his writing life he devoted himself to detective fiction beginning with "The Green God" in 1911. He also wrote fantasies including "The Second Coming: A Vision" with Henry P. There are several short tears at the folds with some light red staining below the text. There is some light soiling at bottom right and there is a crease & tear to & a small piece out of the bottom right corner. Good. <p>Abdullah writes to future congressman Seymour Halpern that he is too busy to see anyone but "I am sending by this mail the signed picture to your friend."<p>Achmed Abdullah who claimed descent from the Russian imperial family and was educated in England emigrated to the United States in the 1910s. He went on to become an American author and screenwriter most noted for his pulp stories of crime mystery and adventure. He wrote screenplays for some successful films and earned an Academy Award nomination for collaborating on the screenplay for the 1935 film "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer".<p>The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. Centuries into the future a closed utopian society is dedicated solely to intellectual pursuits encapsulated in the "glass bead game" an esoteric competition which requires a limitless knowledge of music math and culture to win. Hesse's novel follows Joseph Knecht as he becomes a master of the game eventually rising to the top of the hierarchy to become Magister Ludi the executive officer of the game administrators. Film rights to Evans' novel were acquired by Virgin Films in the year of publication with noted Italian director Sergio Corbucci slated to direct and talk of George Best as the footballer but the film was ultimately never made. <br/><br/>Corbucci rose to prominence in 1966 with his cult Spaghetti Western film "Django" a release considered to have set a new standard of violence in the genre. Corbucci is remembered one of Italy's most prolific exploitation directors creating stylish hyper-violent films in what is today known as the Euro Western and "poliziotteschi" genres usually following lone antiheroes seeking retribution for past wrongs as in "Navajo Joe" 1966 "Ringo and His Golden Pistol" 1966 and "The Cruel Ones" 1967 or left-leaning proletarian protagonists as in "The Mercenary" 1968 "The Specialists" 1969 and "Companeros" 1970. <br/><br/>Black untitled wrappers with a die-cut title window in the British style. N.p.: N.p. 1970. Dialogue transcript for the unfinished film copy belonging to Frank Zappa circa 1968 with a single annotation in Zappa's hand in holograph ink of "Wednesday" on top of first page. A transcript of multiple takes of ten scenes shot by Zappa for his long aspired but never finished experimental film. Featuring scenes primarily between Don Preston and Phyllis Smith Altenhaus the transcript also contains dialogue from Zappa himself as well as Carl Zappa Billy Mundi Aynsley Dunbar and Jimmy Carl Black. The annotation of "Wednesday" likely refers to the day the sequences were shot or the day Zappa intended on editing the footage.<br/><br/>Full provenance available including letter stating transcript came from the estate of Zappa's longtime business manager Herb Cohen.<br/><br/>As early as 1967 Zappa had begun work on his infamous unfinished experimental film "Uncle Meat." Originally featuring his then band the Mothers of Invention as both musicians and fictional characters over the next decade the film would morph and change into various proposed incarnations by Zappa's apparently unbridled imagination but the project was always constrained by a lack of financing. Finally in 1987 a direct-to-video "making of" documentary of the uncompleted "Uncle Meat" production was released.<br/><br/>In 1969 the Mothers of Invention released the double album "Uncle Meat." Largely an instrumental soundtrack to the unfinished film the album was an unfocused but brilliant showcase for Zappa's compositional dexterity and a harbinger of his emergence as one of the most creatively fertile minds in rock music.<br/><br/>Transparent front wrapper with orange back wrapper and spine. 59 leaves with last page of text numbered 58.
