Wives and Lovers Original screenplay for the 1963 film
Hollywood: Paramount Pictures 1963. Revised Final White script for the 1963 film. Copy belonging to a crew member presumed with annotations in holograph ink and pencil on both sides of the first page.

Based on a screenplay by Jacqueline "Jay" Presson Allen a romantic comedy about unsuccessful writer Bill Austin Johnson who lives in New York with his wife Bertie Leigh. Their lives change dramatically when Bill's first novel becomes a bestseller and he persuades Bertie to quit her job and move to the suburbs. Bill begins working long hours on Broadway adapting his novel for the theater and he spends more and more time with his attractive agent Lucinda Ford Hyer. Bertie is suspicious and begins courting actor Gar Aldrich Jeremy Slate.

Set in New York shot on location in California. Edith Head was nominated for an Oscar for her costume designs.

Playwright and screenwriter Jay Allen was living in New York when she wrote the screenplay performing on radio and in cabaret both of which she loathed so much that she tried to get fired from nearly every production. After a long period of writer's block she started writing again and sold some of her work to live television programs like "The Philco Television Playhouse." When she married Lewis M. Allen in 1955 they moved to the countryside where Allen had a baby and spent two and a half "absolutely wonderful years in the country."

Eventually the couple came back to the city to work. Allen drew on her married life and wrote "The First Wife" a witty script about a suburban working couple. When Allen read Muriel Spark's "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" she instantly saw the books potential for stage adaptation. After undergoing hypnotherapy to alleviate another bout of writer's block Allen produced a draft of the play in three days.

Allen's notable film credits as screenwriter include "Marnie" 1964 "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" 1969 "Cabaret" 1972 "A Star Is Born" 1976 "Deathtrap" and "The Verdict" both 1982 and "Lord of the Flies" 1990.

Self wrappers noted as REVISED FINAL WHITE SCRIPT on the front wrapper rubber-stamped copy No. 107 and production No. 10228 dated February 1 1963 with a credit for screenwriter Anhalt. Norman Jewison director; Stirling Silliphant screenwriter; John Ball novel; Sidney Poitier Rod Steiger Warren Oates starring
In the Heat of the Night Original Film Pressbook
Beverly Hills CA: United Artists 1967. Original Pressbook for the 1967 film.

Sidney Poitier is a Philadelphia police detective recruited to help solve a murder in a small bigoted Mississippi town when he is accidentally implicated in the crime while passing through. The film dealt skillfully with the topic of race relations in the South during the Civil Rights movement and included a controversial scene in which a white actor Larry Gates slaps Poitier in the face at which point Poitier slaps him right back. It was said you could determine the racial makeup of a theater by their verbal reaction to the scene: cheers for a predominantly black audience or whispers for a predominantly white one.

Though set in the fictional town of Sparta Mississippi Poitier refused to travel below the Mason-Dixon Line so the film was shot largely in Illinois. Quincy Jones composed the soundtrack for the film. Winner of five Academy Awards including Best Picture and nominated for two others.

12 pages saddle stapled 13.25 x 18 inches. Raymond Chandler screenwriter; Frank Partos screenwriter; Irving Pichel director; Rachel Field novel; Frank Partos screenwriter;
And Now Tomorrow Original screenplay for the 1944 film
Hollywood: Paramount Pictures 1943. Revised Draft script for the 1943 film. Co-written for the screen by Raymond Chandler and Frank Partos. Chandler's contribution to the script had mostly to do with Alan Ladd's character and his tough dialogue elements sneered at by the media upon the film's release. Laid in is an 8-page shooting schedule on blue stock a 6-page revision to sequence "A" on yellow onionskin stock and 14 pages of "inter-office communication" on yellow studio stationery comments on scenes sequences and pages of the script.

Based on Rachel Field's 1942 novel about Emily Blair Loretta Young a wealthy deaf girl whose hometown is named for her family. Doctor Vance Ladd who grew up on the other side of town resents the Blair family but is working on a serum to cure deafness which he tries on Emily and she is eventually cured.

One of only five screenplays written by Chandler this being the second following his script for the classic "Double Indemnity" 1944 based on James M. Cain's novel.

Chandler had a tumultuous career in Hollywood including a suspension in late 1945 from Paramount for "refusing to perform under a contract which is not a proper expression of my standing in the motion picture business" but his influence on film adaptation is nearly unmatched with scripts and stories that pushed the limits of the Production Code Administration.

Script:

White self wrappers production No. SF 8577 dated December 3 1943 with credits for screenwriters Partos and Chandler.
