‎The Birds Archive of original title card maquettes for the 1963 film‎

‎Universal City CA: Universal Pictures 1986. Archive of three title card maquettes hand lettered by Harold Adler for the 1963 film. Also included are two fascinating autograph letters both elaborately designed and executed in a calligraphic style from Adler to author illustrator and editor Fridolf Johnson relating to Adler's work with Hitchcock.

Harold Adler was a calligrapher who created hand lettered titles on over 100 films worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock and was a favorite of legendary title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In addition to "The Birds" 1963 his credits include "Comanche!" 1956 "The Man with the Golden Arm" 1955 "The Seven Year Itch" 1955 "Carmen Jones" 1954 "Psycho" 1960 "In the Heat of the Night" 1967 and "Justine" 1969.

In 2012 an exhibition of Adler's work was organized by noted typographer and design historian Jill Bell at the American Advertising Federation Kansas City.

In the first letter dated May 16 1986 Adler describes after touching on other topics meeting Hitchcock and then presenting him with layout ideas for the titles. He then goes into detail regarding his answer to a question about the techniques of artist Eric Gill stating that Hitchcock "was amazed" by this answer and after that would "request 'to be sure to bring that nice young man along" meaning Adler whenever he had a job for Adler's firm.

The second letter dated June 10th 1986 focuses almost exclusively on Adler's work on "The Birds" going into some detail regarding both the creative and technical processes of producing hand lettered titles for films. He also describes Hitchcock as "an unusual person to work with. He was a master at what he did knew what he wanted and smoked the finest cigars." He then concludes the letter with some brief remarks on how his approach to title lettering evolved over the course of his career.

The letters themselves are works of art executed in a variety of inks in Adler's detailed penmanship with Johnson's name on each in particular receiving full calligraphic treatment.

Also included are draft title cards for the film stylistically similar to each other but much different from the titles used in the finished film. Two of the cards are marked as "camera ready" in holograph colored pencil with titles executed in white paint on black board. The third card photo stat on black paper which accompanied the June 10th letter has been annotated by Adler on both the recto and verso explaining the in more detail the technical process of putting the lettering on film.

Overall a significant collection of material illuminating a little explored aspect of film design with a direct and significant connection to a seminal work by a director known for personally overseeing all aspects of production.

Each letter 19 x 24 inches single leaf rectos only. May 16th letter folded twice for mailing June 10th letter folded. Two long diagonal creases to the May 16th letter else both are Fine. From a cursory glance one can immediately see the differences with regard to nudity paid by both US and UK publicists the UK stills decidedly more liberal with regard to the "forbidden flesh."

The US stills were taken directly from scenes of the film and the UK stills appear to be from either a deleted scene or a mock setup designed for foreign publicity with Mr. Teas seen in a bathhouse with the "Buxom Bath House Beauties" Baby Dahl Chicky Fricase Frenchie Tost Teri Clawthe that were not seen in the final cut. The UK stills purport "Monstrous Murder!" and "Sizzling Suspense!" taglines however the final cut features neither murder nor suspense.

The story finds the shy Mr. Teas played by William Ellis Teas a door-to-door dental appliance salesman who has a chemical reaction with an anesthetic that allows him to have X-ray vision as in "seeing through women's clothes." He also overcomes all of his inhibitions leading to ribald encounters with his dental nurse his therapist his secretary a girl in a bar etc.

Russ Meyer's first feature produced by Pad-Ram Enterprises a monogram using the initials of director Russell Albion Meyer and producer Peter A. DeCenzie and the film that basically launched the lighthearted "nudie" pictures of the early 1960s. The film was immediately touted as "ribald" and "Frenchy" with regard to the "genuinely sexy sequences with generous expanses of attractive flesh" that used to be seen strictly in foreign films. At a time when Hollywood moguls were losing audiences to the comfort of in-home cinema through television Meyer and DeCenzie who spent years on the burlesque and night club circuits released an independent naturally sexy endeavor in the tradition of the great Chaplin films. The bigger productions companies would never have made a film as far overboard on sex.

For his debut Russ Meyer did even more of the crew work than usual shooting in four days during the spring of 1958 with a budget of $24000 ultimately making over $1.5 million worldwide. The film was marketed as a "nudist" film with a "French" sensibility but exhibited all the distinctive traits for which Meyer would soon become known including large bosoms insane plots a somewhat feminist perspective campy dialogue and guerilla cinematography.

Shot on location in various California destinations including Malibu Lagoon State Beach. Meyer even shot various scenes at his beach-front home in Los Angeles.

All stills 8 x 10 inches some differ slightly in size. Two US stills Very Good plus others Near Fine. UK stills Near Fine. Pad-Ram Enterprises unknown books‎

‎Something Wicked This Way Comes Original screenplay for the 1983 film‎

Staneruck notes that "Many of the scenes that were shot which in my opinion were stunningly great were discarded after rewrites and lost in the editing . one incredible sequence that was cut shows . Bruce Willis in the shower naked.slowly overcome by emotion and breaks down crying." Staneruck also describes a very expensive shot of the train crash "which was on a 3 axis gimble with 20 stunt people falling about and dying violently. A Big Bucks scene. ‎Warren Lewis director; Herb Perdum screenwriter; Frank Lovejoy starring‎

‎Night Beat Nightbeat Original script for the 1951 radio program‎

‎New York: National Broadcasting Company NBC 1951. Revised script for the 1951 radio program "Nightbeat" a National Broadcasting Company NBC radio drama series that aired from February 6 1950 to September 25 1952 sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer and Wheaties cereal starring Frank Lovejoy. This script for this episode is untitled.

"Nightbeat" came during the competition for audiences between radio and television and at the tail-end of "radio noir" a style of program that aired during the heyday of film noir. Edmond O'Brien "D.O.A." 1950 and several key noirs was slated to be the lead role and his narration coupled with William Rousseau's direction and Larry Marcus' script proved too edgy for NBC executives and potential sponsors. The producers ordered a second audition this time bringing in Frank Lovejoy 1912-1962 who had starred in "The Blue Beetle" radio show in 1940. Lovejoy's reworking of the hard-boiled script added a human element that of a passionate crusading reporter for the Chicago Star who covered the night beat known as "Randy Stone." Stone looked for interesting and strange stories encountering criminals and troubled souls some he was able to help. Lovejoy's grasp and delivery of hard-boiled phrases like "painted little dames with their brassy laughter" gave the show the edge it needed to compete with a burgeoning television audience and an elegant sendoff for radio noir.

The announcer for the program was Don Rickles and supporting performers included Joan Banks William Conrad Paul Frees Peter Leeds Lurene Tuttle and Ben Wright among others. Lovejoy would reprise his role as the tough guy with a heart of gold in "Search in the Night" 1953 an episode of the 1953-1956 television series "Four Star Playhouse."

Noted as PROGRAM NUMBER 57 on the first page dated September 7 1951 5:30-6:00 PM EST with credits for program manager Home Canfield actor Frank Lovejoy producer-director Warren Lewis writer Herb Purdum and others. 32 leaves mimeograph duplication.
