In 1890 the same year that Stanley published 'In Darkest Africa' he published his most important work with deliberate irony. Here he analyses the causes of the pauperism and vice of the period and proposes a remedy by ten expedients. These include land settlement emigration rescue work among prostitutes and at the prison-gate the poor man's bank and the poor man's lawyer. Booth's powerful arguments were convincing money was liberally subscribed and a large part of the scheme was carried through. Printing and the Mind of Man 560.
