Chaplin, Jeremiah, DD D D
THE EVENING OF LIFE; or Light and Comfort Amidst the Shadows of Declining Years
Boston: Gould and Lincoln 1859. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Jeremiah Chaplin was a 19th century Reformed Baptist theologian who became the first president of Colby College in Maine in 1817. He returned to his pastorate in Rowley MA in 1833 continuing to preach and to write before a final move to Hamilton NY where he died in 1841. His seven published works were all issued posthumously "The Evening Of Life" being the first in 1851. It is a collection of prayers devotions and religious and philosphical excerpts from numerous authors directed primarily at an older audience. This copy is from the "Revised and Much Enlarged" edition issued by Gould & Lincoln in 1859 a first edition thus and noted as a new edition on the title page. There were also 3 earlier printings by Jewett & Co. Boston in 1854 and 1856. This copy is about 5 x 7 5/8 inches 281 pages plus 12 pages of publisher's ads bound in black paper-covered boards stamped with a geometric design and the Gould & Lincoln symbol. Lettering on spine is in gold. The boards are considerably worn at the edges corners and spine ends with chipping at top of spine cover revealing top edge of binding. The bottom edge of the spine cover is worn through but not yet lost. The boards' surfaces show shelf wear and rubbing. That said the binding itself remains firm with all hinges interior and exterior intact with no signs of cracking. A previous owner's name is neatly written on the fep in pencil. The text was probably exposed to damp conditions at some point but is now dry with a slight spine lean and very minimal foxing and staining. It is otherwise clean complete unmarked and easily read. This book is now very scarce in any of its 19th century editions usually found only in divinity schools and large university libraries.

Gould and Lincoln hardcover

Charles Dickens
The Battle of Life
The Battle of Life: A Love Story is a novella by Charles Dickens, 1st published in 1846. It's the fourth of his five "Christmas Books", coming after The Cricket on the Hearth, followed by The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain. The setting is an English village that stands on the site of a historic battle. Some characters refer to the battle as a metaphor for the struggles of life, hence the title. The story is basically divided into three parts. It bears some resemblance to The Cricket on the Hearth in two respects: it has a non-urban setting, and it involves a romantic twist. It is even less of a social novel than is Cricket. As is typical with Dickens, the ending is a happy one. This novel basically depicts the battles one faces in life and winning them. Unlike his other stories, this does not have any supernatural reference. Charles Dickens, in full, Charles John Huffam Dickens was born on February 7, 1812, in Portsmouth, on the southern coast of England. He was a British novelist, journalist, editor, illustrator and social commentator. Charles Dickens was a prolific and highly influential 19th century British author, who penned such acclaimed works as 'Oliver Twist,' 'A Christmas Carol,' 'David Copperfield' and 'Great Expectations.'He is remembered as one of the most important writers of the Victorian era. Among his accomplishments, he has been lauded for providing a stark portrait of the Victorian era underclass, helping to bring about societal change. The range, compassion, and intelligence of his apprehension of his society and its shortcomings enriched his novels. He created some of the world's best-known fictional characters. He enjoyed a wider popularity during his lifetime than had any previous author.By the 20th century, critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. The Title 'The Battle of Life written/authored/edited by Charles Dickens', published in the year 2019. The ISBN 9788121217699 is assigned to the Paperback version of this title. This book has total of pp. 185 (Pages). The publisher of this title is Gyan Publishing House. This Book is in English. The subject of this book is Religion & Spirituality.
