Corpus Christianorum.
Corpus Christianorum. Pacianus Barcinonensis Opera quae extant
Hardback, LIX+171 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503006956. Pacianus, fourth-century bishop of Barcelona, wrote the De paenitentibus and the De baptismo and exchanged ideas, in two letters, with Sympronianus, member of the heretical group of Novatians. In these letters he gently exposed his reflections against the discourses of the Novatians and in his Contra Novatianorum tractatus, in his own words by no means sluggishly discussed them. The writings of Pacianus which have survived are preserved in three manuscripts: Vaticanus Reginensis Lat. 331, Gratianopolitanus 262 and Parisinus 2182. The codex Mazarinus should hardly be mentioned. Excerpts are found in Lugdunensis 5804 and a manuscript of Vitry burnt in 1944. In the mid-ninth century Florus the Deacon, director of the scriptorium of Lyon, well skilled in Christian doctrine and writings, had taken care that the writings of Pacianus were preserved in the codex Reginensis. Sermons of William of Newburgh
Hardcover. X 118 p., 140 x 215 mm, Languages: Latin, English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9780888444813. This volume offers a first edition of three twelfth-century homiletic works by William of Newburgh, which together constitute a significant witness to the development of meditative theology as a vehicle of spirituality in England in the generations after Anselm. This volume offers a first edition of three homiletic works by the twelfth-century canon regular William of Newburgh: a homily on Luke 11.27 that explores in two successive sections the literal and typological exegesis of the passage, respectively; a sermon on the Trinity, structured as an extended exegesis of the Gloria Patri and the Benedicamus, and owing much to Augustinian notions of the Trinitarian structure of the human soul as an image of God; and a sermon on the martyrdom of St Alban which extrapolates from relatively brief references to the details of the narrative in order to explore the nature of martyrdom and the union of the martyr?s soul with Christ. Together they constitute a significant witness to the development of meditative theology as a vehicle of spirituality in England in the generations after Anselm. In keeping with the principles of the Toronto Medieval Latin Texts series, the texts are edited from a single MS witness, Oxford, Bodleian Library MS Rawlinson C. 31 in the case of the first two works and that of London, Lambeth Palace Library MS 73 in the case of the third, with judicious appeal to the other two MSS for variant readings only where the reading of the base MS is clearly defective. The volume concludes with an index of biblical citations.

A. Barratt
Anne Bulkeley and her Book, Fashioning Female Piety in Early Tudor England
Hardcover. XII 276 p., 6 b/w ill. 4 colour ill., 160 x 240 mm, Languages: English, Latin, Middle English, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503520711. This study is focused on BL MS Harley 494, a small manuscript book which can be dated between 1532 and 1535 and which has many of the features of a preces privatae volume, or private prayer book. It contains prayers in English and Latin but also a number of brief devotional treatises in English. MS Harley 494 possesses two more features of interest: it belonged to a Hampshire widow, Anne Bulkeley (and possibly later to her daughter Anne, a nun at Amesbury Priory); and it emerged from a Birgittine textual community. Barratt edits and annotates the complete manuscript to provide an accessible and informative edition of this little known manuscript. However, Anne Bulkeley and her Book is not a conventional edition of a late Middle English text. Rather, Barratt carefully contextualizes the manuscript within its historical background just before the Dissolution of the Monasteries, and meticulously investigates the varied, and often unusual, sources of many of the individual items in the book. In addition, the discussion encompasses several related manuscripts (principally Lambeth Palace MS 3600 and the so-called Burnet Psalter (Aberdeen University Library MS 25)). This broad focus enables the volume to examine not only the evolution of the manuscript as a whole, but also to answer wider questions of its owner?s identity, her family connections, and her (and her book?s) place in literary, cultural, and religious history.

The Heritage of India The Samkhya System: A History of the Samkhya Philosophy [Hardcover]
About The Book : The denial in the Samkhya of the supreme spirit carries with it curious consequences when added to the extreme development of the doctrine that the spirit is alone the subject. The first product of nature is the intellect, which is called the great one, and which clearly is originally a cosmic function, derived from nature but lighted up by spirit. The natural source of this conception must be found in the idea in the Upanisads that the supreme spirit re- appears as the firstborn of creation after it has produced the primitive matter. The ultimate origin of the idea can be traced beyond the Upanisads to the Rgveda.A much more developed account of Samkhya type is to be found in the Svetasvatara Upanisad, which is no doubt older than the Prasna, but later than the Katha. The Upanisad is definitely deistic, Rudra who bears the epithet but not the name, Siva, being the object of devotion and belief, but at the same time being regarded as the absolute and supreme spirit, rather than as derived from that spirit. On the other hand, the Upanisad contains a series of numbers which are best to be explained as referring to enumerations accepted by the Samkhya school: thus in i, 4, the individual self is compared to a wheel with three tyres, sixteen ends, fifty spokes, twenty counter-spokes and six sets of eight. About The Author : Prof Arthur Berriedale Keith DCL DLit LLD( 1879 – 1944) was a Scottish constitutional lawyer, scholar of Sanskrit and Indologist. He became Regius Professor of Sanskrit and Lecturer in Constitutional History in the University of Edinburgh. He served in this role from 1914 to 1944. He is buried in Grange Cemetery in Edinburgh with his wife, Margaret Balfour Allan (died 1934). The grave lies on the south side of the central vaults, adjacent to the central archway through the vaults. homelie sur l'eglise du Rocher, attribuee a Timothee Aelure Texte copte et traduction. Deux textes arabes et traducion
Paperback, 214 p., 18 x 26,5. ISBN 170007.

Languages: French, Latin,.

A. Chapman
Sacred Authority and Temporal Power in the Writings of Bernard of Clairvaux
Hardback, approx. X+253 p., 156 x 234 mm. ISBN 9782503541051. An interdisciplinary contribution to the latest scholarship on Wyclif, Wycliffism, and lollardy. The philosophical and theological ideas of John Wyclif, their dissemination among clerical and lay audiences, and the movement of religious dissent associated with his name all provoked sharp controversies in late medieval England. This volume brings together the very latest scholarship on Wyclif and Wycliffism, with its contributors exploring in interdisciplinary fashion the historical, literary, and theological resonances of the Wycliffite controversies. Far from adhering to the traditional binary divide between ?orthodoxy? and ?heresy? as a tool for explaining the religious turmoil of the late fourteenth, fifteenth, and early sixteenth centuries, essays here explore the construction and rhetorical use of those terms, collectively producing a more nuanced account of the religious history of pre-Reformation England. Topics include the use of religious lyrics and tables of lessons as indirect rebuttals of Wycliffite claims; the social networks through which dissenters transmitted their ideas; dissenting and mainstream readings of Scripture; the ?survival? of Wycliffism in the run-up to Henry VIII's reformation; and the fate of Wyclif and Wycliffism in later historiography. Leading contributors include Anne Hudson, Alastair Minnis, and Peter Marshall. Languages : English.

A. Cresson
Hardcover. 303 p., 140 x 210 mm, Languages: French, Latin, Including an index. Fine copy. ISBN 9782503532240.

Corpus Christianorum. The Autograph Manuscript of the Liber Floridus A Key to the Encyclopedia of Lambert of Saint-Omer
Hardback, IV+210 p., + 42 pl., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503507927. Vol. IV of the series Autographa Medii Aevi is a study of the original manuscript of the Liber Floridus (Ghent, University Library, MS 92). This encyclopedical compilation of the early twelfth century (finished 1121) was composed, written and illustrated by an obscur canon of the Chapter of our Lady in Saint-Omer (France, dept. du Pas de Calais). It may be considered one of the earliest illustrated medieval encyclopedias and its maps, diagrams and pictures (some of them masterpieces of Romanesque art) are world-famous. Due to its apparent lack of logical structure, however, Lambert's work has often been dismissed as an unorganized compilation. Against this still prevailing opinion the present book shows that the encyclopedia is the expression of a highly personal global view of the world. It was to be a brilliant synthesis, pervaded by an emphatic sense of symbolism, allegory and eschatology. The close codicological and textual analysis of the complete work shows also why Lambert failed to achieve his object in its full splendour; how especially external circumstances have caused a gradual weakening of the original train of thought as well as of the original beauty of the manuscript. The book focuses on the fundamental links between Lambert's thoughts and the material structures he had to create to give them their place in his book. Prof. Derolez has specialized for more than thirty years into the study of the Liber Floridus. In 1968 he edited the original manuscript in a celebrated facsimile and text edition. In 1978 his doctoral thesis on Lambert's work was published. The present work is the synthesis of a life's research. For the first time the complicated genesis of the Liber Floridus is unraveled in an international language. Languages: English, Latin.

Corpus Christianorum. Hildegardis Bingensis Liber divinorum operum
Hardback, CXX+501 p., + 15 pl., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503039213. This edition renders the text of the Ghent manuscript in its final corrected form. The apparatus criticus contains the variant readings of the other early manuscripts. The great novelty is the apparatus correctionum: here all corrections in the Ghent manuscript are painstakingly noted with their extent, the technique used, the identification of the corrector and whenever possible, the text of the original, deleted version. The apparatus fontium, finally, identifies all of Hildegard's sources. The extensive introduction contains original studies by Peter Dronke (who also compiled the apparatus fontium) on the place of the LDO in the work of Hildegard, its originality, meaning and structure. Albert Derolez, who established the text and who is the author of the two other apparatuses provides a detailed analysis of the manuscripts, with special focus on the Ghent codex and its genesis and explains the edition technique adopted.
