‎Abel Distinctions‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Paperback, 726 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:1 col., Language: English. ISBN 9782503593937.‎

‎Summary Peter the Chanter was a master at Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris in the late 12th century. Among his many works is The Abel Distinctions, an alphabetized collection that treats key words by 'distinguishing' their various symbolic meanings in accordance with the traditions of biblical exegesis. The work was innovative in form and deeply conservative in content. Of special use to preachers who would shape a sermon around such sets of distinctions, it also appealed in general to clerics and laity interested in biblical meaning and allegory. The Abel Distinctions may have been the first collection of its kind; it spawned dozens of imitators through the next two centuries and more. Its immense popularity and influence is indicated by its nearly ninety extant manuscripts. The source text of this volume appeared in Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaeualis as Petrus Cantor, Distinctiones Abel (CC CM, 288-288A). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation.‎

‎Summary Richard of Saint-Victor's On The Trinity from the 12th century is a main source for our understanding of a leading intellectual tradition of the Western world in which love was regarded the highest and the best in the human world and therefore also was the reality in which the highest and the best, God, was to be seen. Richard understands human love as interpersonal so that love must be realized between two persons, but for being the highest love that excludes any private and selfish love, both loving persons must share their love with a third person. ‎Victorine Restoration. Essays on Hugh of St Victor, Richard of St Victor, and Thomas Gallus‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 376 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:15 b/w, 2 col., 4 tables b/w., Language: English. ISBN 9782503585130.‎

‎Summary The Victorines were scholars and teachers of philosophy, liberal arts, sacred scripture, music, and contemplation at the Abbey of Saint-Victor in Paris. This collection focuses on the three greatest Victorines: Hugh (d. 1141), who established the direction of the school; Richard (d. 1173), who developed Victorine contemplation; and Thomas Gallus (d. 1246), who culminated Victorine contemplative thought and transmitted it to other schools, especially the Franciscans. They offer an innovative revival of the Christian spiritual and intellectual tradition for their reforming pastoral mission in their urban setting and for the Church. Their contemporaries saw the Victorines as beacons of spiritual love and intellectual richness. Later reformers and thinkers held their writings as touchstones of contemplative love, including, for example, Bonaventure, Thomas Aquinas, Jean Gerson, Thomas à Kempis, the Devotio Moderna, and many others. The writings of the Victorines found broad appeal among later medieval readers, as well as praise among early modern reformers, Protestant and Catholic alike. In recent decades, the Victorines have returned to scholarly attention and renewed appreciation. Scholarly studies, critical editions, and translation projects reveal the treasures of Victorine thought and spirituality. This volume showcases the findings of recent research and scholarly advances in Victorine studies, offering new readers a status quaestionis of the field. It also features new research by eminent experts in Victorine thought that points out promising directions for future research, thus offering important new findings for established specialists.

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 442 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Illustrations:1 col., Language: French. ISBN 9782503593746.‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 2 vols, xxvi + 1306 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: French. ISBN 9782503590868.‎

TABLE OF CONTENTS This book is the first exhaustive study of one of the fundamental theory for medieval science: the theory of celestial influence. The analysis of the Sentences commentaries reveals different conceptions of celestial causality and shows the interactions between secular and Christian cosmologies.

‎Homiliary of Paul the Deacon. Religious and Cultural Reform in Carolingian Europe‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 339 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:1 b/w, 3 col., 13 tables b/w., 1 maps b/w, Language(s):English, Latin. ISBN 9782503577913.‎

‎Summary As one of the most widely used products of Charlemagne's religious and cultural reforms, the homiliary of Paul the Deacon is a unique monument in the history of Western Europe. Completed around AD 797, this collection of patristic homilies and sermons shaped the religious faith and liturgical practices of the churches in Carolingian Europe and those of countless other churches over the course of a millennium of use. Until now, scholarly study of the homiliary has rested on seven partial witnesses to the collection. This study, however, draws on over 80 newly identified witnesses from the Carolingian period, while providing a brief guide and handlist to hundreds of later manuscripts. It replaces the current scholarly reconstruction of the homiliary, discusses the significance of the collection's liturgical structure and provisions, and considers the composition of the homiliary in the context of Charlemagne's reforms and Paul's patron-client relationships. The study also brings together evidence for the production and use of this text in thirty-three Carolingian monasteries, cathedrals, and churches. The book then addresses the homiliary's theological character: the contents of the homiliary reflected a concern for expressing and defending orthodox doctrine at Charlemagne's court against Trinitarian and Christological heresies, as well as an urgent attention to moral reform in the light of a belief in the imminence of divine judgement. Finally, the study demonstrates the varied uses of Paul's collection and its historical legacy. ‎Compilatio singularis exemplorum‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, cxl + 853 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Language: Latin. ISBN 9782503593081.‎

Jahrhunderts, kritisch herausgegeben.‎

‎Opera latina XXXIX (64). Ars ad faciendum et solvendum quaestiones‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, lxxxv + 788 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Illustrations:3 b/w, 1 col., Language(s):Latin, Spanish. ISBN 9782503586779.‎

‎Summary This work by Ramon Llull, originally composed in Catalan ('Art de fer e solre questions'), was written in Rome in 1295. It is also known as Lectura super Artem inventivam et Tabulam generalem, as it attempts to make the Ars inventiva veritatis (op. 44) and Tabula generalis (op. 53) more approachable. In the prologue Llull expresses his wish for this work to be translated into Latin. It belongs to the so-called encyclopaedic writings in the Lullian production, and the author announces a thousand questions related mainly to theology. The present work aims to provide a general technique applicable to any subject, a practical usage of the Ars inventiva veritatis and the Tabula generalis. In general, Llull develops some aspects dealt with in op. 44 and op. 53 in order to solve possible objections or to experiment with new procedures. It is another step in the great epistemological project of the Majorcan: to establish a new general science that overcomes the difficulties inherent in scholastic-Aristotelian science, to apply its method to the articles of the Christian faith, and to create a universal scientific system as a solid basis for the other sciences.‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, lxviii + 355 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Language: Latin. ISBN 9782503589831.‎

‎Summary Andrew of Saint Victor was one of the most prominent biblical scholars of the twelfth century. He was a regular canon of the Parisian abbey of St Victor, which in the twelfth century had developed into a prestigious center of spiritual learning, closely connected to the nascent university in Paris. Because of his frequent use of Jewish exegetical materials, Andrew's commentaries are a rich source for the history both of biblical hermeneutics and of inter-religious dialogue during the Middle Ages. His Isaiah commentary caused outrage among medieval Christian scholars because it eschewed traditional christological interpretations, and instead offered a reading "secundum Hebraeos." Scholars have seen Andrew of St Victor as standing at the cradle of a scholarly interest in the Biblical text, which influenced scholars such as the fourteenth-century Franciscan Nicholas of Lyra, and, in the long run, reformers such as John Wycliff, Martin Luther, and John Calvin.‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Paperback, 206 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):French, English. ISBN 9782503593319.‎

‎Summary In his richly documented and still valuable study of Aquinas and the Church Fathers, published in 1946, Gottfried Geenen, o.p. noted that the study of this aspect of Thomas Aquinas's thought was just beginning to take place. More than seventy years later considerable progress has been made, both historically and doctrinally, not at least due to the technological advances in the area of the study of Aquinas' writings. It has been argued both that Aquinas had a remarkable knowledge of a wide range of the Church Fathers and that he was actively engaged in acquiring new material from hitherto unknown Fathers. Due to Thomas' profound commitment to both Latin and Greek patristic sources he was not only able to draw on the rich tradition of the past but also explore new possibilities and solutions. This commitment and interaction between tradition and speculative reason has led some to claim tentatively that one might characterize Thomas Aquinas' theology as being ad mentem patrum. The goal of this volume is to explore ways to corroborate this claim. In order to do so, the contributions investigate the presence and use of the Church Fathers in Aquinas' thought both historically and systematically. ‎Life at Saint Victor. The Liber Ordinis, the Life of William of Æbelholt, and a selection of works of Hugh, Richard, and Odo of Saint Victor, and other authors‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 488 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Illustrations:1 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503580661.‎

‎Summary This volume brings together a number of texts that shed light on life in the Abbey of Saint Victor in Paris, from its ideals to its daily routine. The Liber ordinis builds a framework and ideal vision for life at the Abbey of Saint Victor. Richard's De quaestionibus, Hugh's De institutione novitiorum, the letters of Odo, William of Æbelholt's Vita, and the other documents translated here reflect the spirit of Victorine reform. Its central theme was the vita apostolica, with its emphasis on sharing resources and living in a community. By incorporating prayer, pastoral care, moral discipline, and education, the Victorines believed their lifestyle would help to reform the greater Christian world that was so in need of restoration to the image in which God had created it. Many of the texts gathered here are translated into English for the first time, and are an invaluable resource for the study of the Abbey of Saint Victor, twelfth-century church reform, and medieval spirituality. ‎Beyond the Sermo modernus. Sermon Form in Early Fifteenth-Century England‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, x + 282 pages, Size:124 x 228 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9780888442222.‎

‎Summary In England, as well as on the continent, the early fifteenth century saw a slackening of rigorous academic work in theology and at the same time a stronger interest in biblical and devotional approaches and practices. This book addresses the question of whether, and if so in what way, such a change may also have occurred in preaching by investigating the form in which sermons were constructed, to determine whether a new development or innovation replaced the scholastic sermon, or sermo modernus, in use from the later thirteenth century on. The volume concludes with editions of sermons drawn from major works created in England between the final years of the fourteenth and the middle of the fifteenth century.‎

‎, Brepols - Fidem, 2021 Paperback, xxix + 266 pages, Size:165 x 240 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503594064.‎

‎Summary In the almost twenty years between the two international conferences on John Wyclif organised by the University of Milan, the most recent of which (September 2016) lies to some extent at the origin of the present volume, an increasing number of studies have been devoted to this great English thinker, theologian and reformer. These have enhanced our knowledge of his philosophical, theological and pastoral work, which had long remained in the shadows. The essays collected in the present book take further steps along this path, through the contribution of a range of specialists who have been called to further reconstruct Wyclif's place in his intellectual milieu from the standpoint of his textual and doctrinal dependence and influence: the collected essays deal with the antecedents of Wyclif's thought, his sources, and his role as a source for countless followers and opponents. The following authors have contributed to the volume: Mark Thakkar, Alessandro Conti, Aurélien Robert, Stephen E. Lahey, Ian Christopher Levy, Sean Otto, Kantik Ghosh, Jind?ich Marek and Graziana Ciola. ‎Signa Iudicii. Orígenes, fuentes y tradición hispánica‎

‎, Brepols - Fidem, 2021 Paperback, vii + 407 pages, Size:165 x 240 mm, Illustrations:6 col., 22 tables b/w., Language: Spanish. ISBN 9782503593425.‎

‎Quasi aurora consurgens. The Victorine theological anthropology and its decline‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, 582 pages, Size:178 x 254 mm, Language :English. ISBN 9782503590929.‎

‎Summary The present work tries to set the Victorine theological anthropology in the context of doctrinal history. In the twelfth century, the canons of Saint-Victor formed the single largest community of theologians with the most extensive literary legacy. But is there a distinctive, characteristically Victorine model of theological anthropology? The first half of the present volume investigates this question through a close reading of the works of Hugh, Richard, Walter and Achard, and concludes with a positive answer. In a period of theological experimentation Hugh of Saint-Victor elaborated, through selectively reading and altering Patristic sources, his own model of theological anthropology. Its principles and concepts also appear in the spiritual works of other Victorine authors and set the Victorines apart from other spiritualities of the period. The second half of the work investigates the immediate, thirteenth-century reception of this model. That scholastic authors held Hugh and Richard in high regard is well-known, but a closer investigation reveals a different picture. The testimony of various theological sources (from Sentences glosses and commentaries, to spiritual works) shows that thirteenth-century theologians have already found elements of the Victorine anthropology either untenable or unintelligible,as their reaction varies from explicit rejection to selective reading and reinterpretation. This transition from acceptable and inspirative to problematic occurred in less than a century's time, and still influences the way Victorine texts are read. Thus, considering a twelfth-century model, together with all of its necessary distortions, in thirteenth-century interpretations, may give us a better understanding of the limitations and potentials of the Victorine theology.‎

‎Lest She Pollute the Sanctuary'. The Influence of the Protevangelium Iacobi on Women's Status in Christianity‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, x + 243 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:1 b/w, 1 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503590363.‎

‎Summary This work explores a second-century text, the Protevangelium Iacobi, and, by examining current scholarship on the subject, assesses the way it has influenced the Christian perception of women and the ordering of their lives through the centuries down to the present day. It demonstrates how Mary, as she is presented in this text with extreme and unreal emphasis on her purity, has been held up as an unattainable model for all Christian women and takes as a case study the lives of contemplative women in the Roman Catholic church, showing how the image of Mary impossibly secluded in the temple has been partly responsible for their enclosure. By exploring the way female biological processes have been allowed to intrude on the sacred, tracing this influence from the Old Testament, through this text and its connection with Mary to the present day, it argues that this has been a significant factor in the denial of presbyteral ordination to women in some Christian churches. One of the original features of this work is the tracing of art work depicting scenes from the text across the Christian world, thus demonstrating the breadth of its influence, right down to New Age writings today. TABLE OF CONTENTS Part I: Questions of Influence Chapter 1: Prolegomena: Locating ourselves and our Questions and the Protevangelium Jacobi: 'Joachim searched the records of the twelve tribes of Israel' Chapter 2: Introducing the Protevangelium Jacobi: authorship, genre, provenance, dating, sources, purpose: 'All the while, I was glorifying God who gave me the wisdom to write this history.' Part II: Aspects of Influence Chapter 3: The Influence of the Protevangelium on Mariology and Asceticism: 'A virgin has given birth!' Chapter 4: The Influence of the Protevangelium on the Concept of [Woman in the] Sacred Space: 'her heart will never be led away from the temple of the Lord' Chapter 5: The Influence of the Protevangelium on Concepts of Ritual Purity: 'lest she defile the sanctuary of the Lord' Part III: Means of Influence Chapter 6: The Influence of the Protevangelium on the Sanctoral Cycle of the Church's Liturgy: 'thou shall not walk on this earth until I bring thee into the Temple of the Lord'. Chapter 7: The Influence of the Protevangelium on the Artistic and Iconographic Tradition: 'he set her down on the third step of the altar and she danced with her feet?' Conclusion: Consequences of Influence: Chapter 8: The Influence of the Protevangelium Jacobi on the lives of women: 'Anna, you will conceive and give birth, and your child will be talked about all over the world.' Appendix I: The Influence of the Protevangelium on the Cult of Mary in the martyrological tradition: 'and the Lord God poured grace upon her?and every house in Israel loved her.' ‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, 221 pages, Size:148 x 210 mm, Illustrations:4 b/w, Language: French. ISBN 9782503588957.‎

TABLE OF CONTENTS Radulfus Ardens - Speculum universale (libri VII-X) - ed. C. Heimann, S. ‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, 419 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Languages: Latin, French. ISBN 9782503591162.‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, 550 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Illustrations:4 col., Languages: Latin, English. ISBN 9782503578057.‎

‎Summary Peter the Chanter's Distinctiones Abel displays the multiple senses of some eleven hundred biblical terms and arranges the terms in alphabetical order. Preserved in nearly ninety manuscript copies, it stands at the head of a series of similar aids for preachers and students of the Bible. Its immediate context is the practice of "distinguishing" the senses of terms in a biblical text as the backbone of a sermon, a novel practice employed by several masters of the late twelfth century, notably by Peter's colleague in Paris, Peter Comestor. The Distinctiones Abel was compiled in an age of organization and may be compared with such searchable reference works as Gratian's Decretum, the Glosa Ordinaria, the new Latin dictionaries, and Peter Lombard's Sentences. It is among the first scholarly works to use the alphabet as a technique of information retrieval. Only selections of the work have been printed before; this editio princeps will be of interest to intellectual historians and those interested in medieval biblical studies, homiletics, popular imagery, and allegory. The Introduction itself is a major work of scholarship in a new field. It includes a brief account of Peter the Chanter's life and work, a survey of the genre 'distinctiones,' an extensive desciption of the manuscripts, many of them treated in print for the first time, along with a thorough exposition of the sophisticated methodology of textual criticism employed.‎

‎, Brepols, 2024 Hardback, cxxx + 226 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9780888442376.‎

‎Summary In the twelfth century, a widely circulated hypothesis about the descendants of St Anne, mother of the Virgin, included the idea that Salome, the mother of the disciples James and John, was in fact a man and St Anne's third husband. Two scholars mounted a challenge: Maurice of Kirkham, prior of the Augustinian abbey of Kirkham in Yorkshire; and Herbert of Bosham, a former student of Peter Lombard and a companion of Thomas Becket. Both men employed scholastic methods of enquiry and knowledge of Hebrew; both decried the acceptance of a flawed hypothesis about the genealogy of the Virgin as symbolic of an uncritical acceptance of scholastic authorities with the potential to distort comprehension of the Gospels. This volume provides the first edition and translation of Maurice's Contra Salomitas, in both its short and long versions. It also provides an edition and translation of Herbert's letter to Henry, count of Champagne. A substantial introduction outlines the long evolution of the debate about the kin of Jesus, and situates Maurice and Herbert in the context of their twelfth-century scholastic milieu.

‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, lxvii + 336 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Illustrations:1 col., Languages: Latin, Italian. ISBN 9782503584645.‎

‎Philosophical Psychology in Late-Medieval Commentaries on Peter Lombard's Sentences. Acts of the XIVth Annual Colloquium of the Société Internationale pour l'Étude de la Philosophie Médiévale, Radboud Universiteit, 28-30 October 2009‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, xxii + 445 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503589091.‎

‎Summary The proceedings of the SIEPM Colloquium at Nijmegen published in this volume bring together new evidence for how the corpus of late-medieval commentaries on the Sentences, especially from the second half of the fourteenth century, contributed to the development of philosophical psychology within the discipline of theology. The relation among the faculties of the soul, the limits of knowledge, hylomorphism and the union of soul and body, intuitive and abstractive cognition, the immortality of the soul, the experience of the beatific vision, divine foreknowledge and the knowability of species are some of the topics involving psychological issues that are examined in this volume. The wealth of new information presented in this volume results from the interpretation of previously unexplored sources. The essays in this volume demonstrate that the various parts and Books of Peter Lombard's Sentences, the standard textbook of theology in the Middle Ages, provided lecturers and commentators with a variety of loci for the discussion of philosophical topics, from the principia (Denys of Montina), the Prologue (Alfonsus Vargas of Toledo, Hugolino of Orvieto, John Regis, Francis Toti of Perugia), Book I (Gregory of Rimini, John of Mirecourt, Pierre Ceffons, Hugolino of Orvieto, Pierre d'Ailly, Peter of Candia, the Vienna Group, John Capreolus, Henry of Gorkum, Denys the Carthusian), Book II (Pierre Ceffons, Peter of Candia, Guillaume de Vaurouillon, Gabriel Biel, Denys the Carthusian), and Book III (Heymericus de Campo). This diversity, within large works on theology conceived broadly, constitutes a tradition parallel to that found in commentaries on Aristotle's De anima in the late Middle Ages. ‎Summary The question of personality is a problematic one, beset by complications of cultural distance, the layers of the past, and the limitations of the source material. Recognising these difficulties, this volume draws together character sketches based upon historical narratives and a range of sources, including architecture, liturgical manuscripts, chronicles, and hagiographical material, to show a multifaceted range of means by which historians can construct, reconstruct, and deconstruct episcopal power through the person of the bishop. Building on a previous volume of essays, Episcopal Power and Local Society in Medieval Europe, 900-1400, which examined the construction, augmentation, and expression of episcopal power in local society, this second volume seeks to uncover the impact of the personalities behind that power. Through essays dealing with the construction of cultural and political personalities, the shadows they cast, and the contexts that forged them, this volume brings to life the careers of bishops across medieval Europe from c. 900 to c. 1480. This geographical range and broad time span throws up the similarity in applications and benefits of interdisciplinarity which can be applied to ecclesiastical history, and presents a fascinating range of case studies for consideration. ‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, xcviii + 304 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Languages: Latin, Spanish, Catalan. ISBN 9782503583723.‎

‎On the Body and Blood of the Lord, with the 'Letter to Fredugard'‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Paperback, 208 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English.*new ISBN 9782503583914.‎

‎Summary The De corpore et sanguine Domini by Paschasius Radbertus was the first monograph ever written solely on the Eucharist. This English translation of the De corpore, along with its companion piece the Letter to Fredugard, make an important contribution to our understanding of the development of Eucharistic theology in the Carolingian era and after. Because of their place in history and the nature of their doctrine, these works give an important witness to the received tradition on the Eucharist, as well as demonstrate an early substantial change theory that contributed to the development of the doctrine of transubstantiation. The translation, along with its extensive commentary and notes, makes this volume in the Corpus Christianorum in Translation series an important resource for the study of Eucharistic theology. The source text of this volume appeared in Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaeualis as Pascasius Radbertus, De corpore et sanguine Domini, cum appendice Epistola ad Fredugardum (CC CM, 16). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation. TABLE OF CONTENTS Preface Bibliography Introduction Prologue De corpore et sanguine Christi by Chapter: Chapter 1 "It must not be doubted that Communion is the true body and blood of Christ." ‎New Perspectives on Thomas of Ireland's Manipulus florum / Nouvelles perspectives sur le Manipulus florum de Thomas d'Irlande‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, ix + 254 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Languages: English, French. ISBN 9780888448323.‎

‎Summary The ten essays that make up this collection join the tradition of studies on the Manipulus florum inaugurated by Richard and Mary Rouse with their Preachers, Florilegia and Sermons, published by the Institute in 1979, and include close analyses of specific lemmata as well as broader studies that should appeal to students and scholars in various fields. The study of Latin florilegia has gathered considerable momentum in recent years driven, in part, by the "New Philology," a theoretical approach to manuscript scholarship that regards textual variants not as corruptions of the original text, but as "authentic witnesses" in their own right. This growing emphasis on textual traditions is directly relevant to medieval florilegia, handy reference works that were widely employed prior to the twentieth century by writers of both vernacular and Latin texts to find eloquent, authoritative quotations from venerable authors. Although these collections of classical, patristic, and medieval quotations are by their nature derivative, they are increasingly recognized as valuable witnesses to historical mentalités. The selection and organization of these textual fragments not only reflects the intellectual milieux of their compilers, but also influenced later intellectual contexts. No example of the genre perhaps better demonstrates these claims than the Manipulus florum of Thomas of Ireland. Composed in 1306, this florilegium comprises nearly six thousand excerpts, organized under 266 alphabetically ordered lemmata, from dozens of authors, including doctors and fathers of the Latin and Greek churches, medieval writers, and classical authors. One of the most prominent works of reference from its creation until the seventeenth century, it remains of interest to philologists, philosophers, and historians not only of the medieval world, but also, given its wide diffusion and reception, of the Renaissance and of humanism. ‎Iohannes Scottus Eriugena (auth), Michael W. Herren, Andrew Dunning, Chiara O. Tommasi, Giovanni Mandolino (eds)‎

‎Carmina, De imagine‎

‎, Brepols, 2020 Hardback, clvii + 201 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Illustrations:5 col., Languages: English, Latin, Greek. ISBN 9782503551746.‎

‎Summary John Scottus Eriugena's Carmina reflect not only his central philosophical and theological ideas, but also his literary education and his life at the court of Charles the Bald. This corpus of Eriugena's poetry includes recent discoveries of new items. Works laid under contribution by the poet have also been expanded. De Imagine represents the Latin translation of Gregory of Nyssa's treatise on the creation of man (De opificio hominis), a text that had already attracted the attention of Dionysius Exiguus in the sixth century. Probably a juvenile work, it witnesses to Eriugena's interests for translating Greek texts and in this respect can be paralleled to major texts like the translation of Maximus the Confessor and of Dionysius the Areopagite. Moreover, large portions of the text were paraphrased or directly employed in the Periphyseon and, later on, were used by William of St Thierry in his De natura corporis et animae. This new critical edition is based on the collation of the two extant manuscripts, compared against the Greek text, and is accompanied by a source apparatus that also highlights the reprises in Periphyseon and the parallel passages in De natura corporis.

‎, Brepols, 2019 Hardback, xviii + 412 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: French. ISBN 9782503587011.‎

‎Summary Par quels mécanismes notre volonté, nos désirs, nos affects, influencent-ils nos croyances ? ‎Orthodox Christianity and Modern Science: Tensions, Ambiguities, Potential‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Hardback, 277 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503576169.‎

‎Summary The first volume of the new series "Science and the Orthodox Christianity" focuses on the nature of the relationship between modern science and Orthodox Christianity with its centuries-old tradition. Orthodoxy today shares a variety of - sometimes ambiguous - attitudes towards modern science shaped by the texts of the Church Fathers, medieval and modern theologians and scholars, as well as contemporary social realities. On the other hand, modern science, which sprung from the quest by West European scholars for a better knowledge of the world, is faced with crucial and uneasy questions about the meaning of life and the position of humankind within the natural world. The main goal of this volume is to define the patterns of the science-religion relationship in the Orthodox world, especially in the light of the most recent trends in both science and theology. Is this a relationship of dialogue or conflict? Of integration or independence? What is the impact of the revival of patristic studies and new theological currents on the relationship? But also, what is the relevant impact of new scientific discoveries on the image of the human and the universe? Has the modern science-religion dialogue in the West influenced Orthodox Christianity in its effort to create new perspectives and concepts in response to new challenges? These questions are crucial for understanding and mapping the current science-religion dialogue in the Orthodox world, and apart from recording given views and opinions. ‎ragione e la norma. Dibattiti attorno alla legge naturale fra XII e XIII secolo‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Hardback, xii + 358 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Languages: Italian, Latin. ISBN 9782503586540.‎

Autour d'Agobard (816-840)‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, 382 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:21 b/w, 28 col., 4 maps b/w, Languages: French, English. ISBN 9782503582351.‎

The Roman Calendar for Beginners‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, x + 141 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Languages: English, Latin. ISBN 9782503584232.‎

‎Summary The first book of Macrobius' Saturnalia, written probably in the 430s AD, includes a historical exposition of the Roman calendar with a dramatic date some fifty years earlier, set in the mouth of the learned senator Vettius Agorius Praetextatus, followed by more technical detail at the request of an Egyptian named Horus, who as a foreigner is allowed to seek elementary information for which no one brought up in Roman culture would need to ask. This text was excerpted in early medieval Ireland, with some but by no means all its pagan matter excised, to provide an introduction for those who at best understood the rules of this recent import but not the rationale for them; it is quoted by Bede as Disputatio Chori et Praetextati, Chorus being a corrupted form of Horus. The excerpt took on a textual life of its own, which the present edition, the first devoted to the Disputatio rather than Macrobius, seeks to clarify; it examines the manuscripts and the relations between them, presents a critical edition with apparatus criticus and translation, and attaches a full-scale commentary concerned above all with the information provided in the text.‎

‎Literary Echoes of the Fourth Lateran Council in England and France, 1215-1405‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Hardback, x + 322 pages, Size:152 x 229 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9780888448316.‎

‎Summary The thirteenth century saw a blossoming of religious literature aimed at the laity composed in the vernacular as well as in Latin for the preachers who ministered to them. It has been traditional in literary history to attribute this vernacular creativity to the Fourth Lateran Council. Although the Council was part of a longer tradition of Church reform, it nonetheless crystallized theological and ecclesiastical thought in a form that was a spur to composition by writers and preachers for more than a century. The aim of this volume is not to attempt a comprehensive account of the Council or its reach in religious writing of the period but to further our understanding of how lay people, largely neglected by earlier councils, received Lateran IV's doctrinal definitions and disciplinary rules. The essays gathered here concentrate on England, where bishops enacted the Council's reforms with particular enthusiasm, and France, where the earliest instructional literature appeared. While the volume takes into account individual works that may have responded more directly to the decrees of the local bishops who enacted the canons proclaimed in 1215, it focuses on others in which the imperatives of the Fourth Lateran Council reverberate as literary echoes, revealing remarkable and often surprising connections with the larger historical and religious context. The texts discussed span the many languages of England and France of the period: Latin, Anglo-Norman, Middle English, Old French, and Occitan. The interpretation of literature that undergirds the entire collection is suitably broad, ranging from chanson de geste and Chaucer's Canterbury Tales to didactic works, and encompassing along the way both biblical translations and sermons whose use of literary techniques to engage their audiences makes them 'literary', even if not always fictional. ‎, Brepols, 2019 Paperback, 265 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:4 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503581804.‎

‎Summary Concentrating on the period of the emergence of the vernaculars in the context of religious text production in Central and Eastern Central Europe from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries, the individual studies in this volume present material so far neglected by nationally defined historiographies and literary studies. The process of vernacularization created a new sociolinguistic field for the negotiation of social order through the choice of texts and topics. This volume seeks to answer the questions of whether, why and how distinctive new communicative, literary, and political cultures developed after the vernacular languages had acquired ever higher levels of literacy and education. The volume fills a gap in contemporary scholarship on the role of the vernaculars and vernacular literatures in European medieval societies and with the focus on Eastern European regions it breaks new ground in regard to questions that have so far only been explored on the basis of material from Europe's 'West'. ‎, Brepols, 2025 Paperback, 237 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, Italian. *new ISBN 9782503614281.‎

‎Summary The Dominican master par excellence of the historical method, Pierre Mandonnet (1858-1936) came to Dante as one of the leading Thomists and medievalists of his generation. However, his monograph Dante le théologien (1935) was neglected and largely forgotten, mainly as a result of the lay historian Étienne Gilson's book-length refutation in Dante et la philosophie (1939). This new edition, and the first English translation, re-presents Mandonnet's erudite and thought-provoking monograph to contemporary scholars and Dante enthusiasts. It includes a critical introduction that situates Mandonnet's work in relation to prevailing currents of Dante scholarship in the early twentieth-century, and outlines how it might invite a reappraisal of central features of Dante's thought today. Mandonnet's historically-informed account of Dante the theologian as a preacher, doctrinarian, and distinctively medieval poet, as well as his sophisticated analysis of the theological purpose, method, and content of the Commedia will be an invaluable resource for anyone who seeks to understand Dante's works and their highly contested reception history. ‎On the Virgin Birth' and 'On the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary'‎

‎, Brepols, 2025 Paperback, 156 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language(s):English, Latin. *new ISBN 9782503599496.‎

‎Summary On the Virgin Birth and On the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary are two key Mariological treatises by the ninth-century Carolingian theologian Paschasius Radbertus. Written at a time when scholarship and erudition during the Carolingian Renaissance were at their height and prominence in the great monastery of Corbie, these two works offer important insights into ninth-century reception of the doctrines of Mary's perpetual virginity and her assumption into heaven. Written for the nuns of the monastery of Notre-Dame de Soissons, they also provide important source material for the study of female spirituality during the Carolingian Reformation era. This work presents for the first time an English translation with introduction and commentary of these texts, based on the critical editions found in Corpus Christianorum, Continuatio Mediaevalis?(CC CM, 56C). References to the corresponding pages of the Corpus Christianorum edition are provided in the margins of this translation. ‎Iacobus de Altavilla, Lectura in libros Sententiarum II Questiones 7-17 ----- The first critical edition of any major theological work by a Cistercian in a university context. - Corpus Christianorum Continuatio Mediaevalis, vol. 312A About this series‎

‎, Brepols - Harvey Miller, 2025 Hardback, Pages: xxix + 500 pages, Size:155 x 245 mm, Language(s):Latin, English. *new. ISBN 9782503617367.‎

‎This is the first critical edition of a major theological work by a Cistercian from a medieval university: the questions on book I of the Sentences by James of Eltville (Jacobus de Altavilla, d. 1392), monk and later abbot of the majestic Eberbach Abbey, the filming location of many of the scenes in The Name of the Rose. The product of bachelor lectures delivered in 1369-1370 at the magnificent Bernardins in Paris just south of Notre-Dame across the Seine, James' Lectura in libros Sententiarum survives in almost two dozen manuscripts. Based on a complete collation of all the witnesses, the editio princeps provides access to a text that illuminates a relatively dark period in the history of scholasticism, portrays the status quaestionis on many issues in philosophical theology between the Black Death and the Great Schism, and illustrates the importance of later-medieval Cistercian theologians and their symbiotic relationship with the Augustinian Hermits who dominated the field from the 1330s to the 1370s. Through the exodus of German scholars from Paris after the outbreak of the Schism, James of Eltville's ideas spread to the new faculties of theology founded in Germanic lands where they exerted a profound influence. This is the second of three volumes. TABLE OF CONTENTS PREFACE INTRODUCTION I. Sigla of the Manuscripts II. Ratio edendi III. Tabula quaestionum for the Present Volume IV.
