Quarto contemporary full paneled calf sympathetically rebacked in calf-gilt red morocco spine label. raised bands. $2850.Early 19th-century quarto edition of the Bible in Arabic printed for distribution by British evangelists in Africa and Asia in attractive contemporary paneled calf.""This edition produced under the patronage of the Bishop of Durham Shute Barrington was at first undertaken by Joseph Dacre Carlyle 1759-1806 Cambridge Professor of Arabic in 1795 and vicar of Newcastle in 1801. On Carlyle's death Henry Ford Lord Almoner's Reader in Arabic at Oxford took up the work and saw the book through the press in 1811. The text is based apparently on the London Polyglot of 1655-57. The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel contributed �250 for 1000 copies to be distributed in Africa and Asia. This printing of the Bible may actually have post-dated the accession of George II to the throne in June 1727 since the Old Testament title page is dated 1727 and the type newly reset perhaps in commemoration whereas Baskett's other quarto printings of that same period were pulled from earlier standing type see Herbert 967. The BOCP bound into this copy was printed from type standing from 1719 Griffiths 151. With Apocrypha and Index. Separate title pages for the Old and New Testaments and the Psalms in Meter. Large 8vo contemporary full calf the boards with chain tool boarders in blind and triple-line gilt frames the spines beautifully gilt tooled in large compartments between double raised bands gilt tooled two compartments with black morocco labels multi-ruled and lettered in gilt board edges gilt tooled turn-ins decorated in blind endpapers flies and page edges handsomely marbled. viii 496; iv 540; iv 452; viii 552; x 562 viii 524. A very well preserved and handsome set the textblocks all quite fine maps fine second volume only with some chipping and loss to the front free-fly the bindings handsome and proper with just a bit of minor wear or rubbing to the tips or extremities less so then would be expected. A VERY HANDSOME SET OF THE IMPORTANT AND SCHOLARLY USEFUL BIBLE FROM THE RELIGIOUS TRACT SOCIETY. The Authorized Version augmented by extensive commentary tables notes prefaces and arrangements. Paul Getty Museum A Thousand Years of the Bible 70�with much woodcut ornamentation complete in contemporary reverse paneled calf boards.Queen Elizabeth I ""encouraged a renewed interest in the English Bible but the Great Bible prepared by Miles Coverdale and published in 1540 was still the version authorized for church use. It was clear that the Geneva Bible published 1560 by Calvinist exiles in Switzerland was in many ways a superior translation; some of its notes however were offensive to the Crown. Consequently it seemed advisable to undertake a revision of the Great Bible. Matthew Parker Archbishop of Canterbury headed the revision committee which included many bishops and well-known biblical scholars. Few changes were made in the Old Testament. There is evidence of genuine scholarly learning in the changes to the New Testament where Parker himself worked� The new authorized version was called the 'Bishops' Bible because of the dominant role they played"" Bible 100 Landmarks 63.
