Rare edition of the New Testament printed in 1794 at Boston for the consortium of booksellers to provide an American printed alternative to British printings with the Great Seal of the United States prominently displayed on the title page suggesting that even at the dawn of the American republic certain clauses of the Third Amendment were subject to fluid interpretation. This book looks the closest to the bonded leather one online. This comes with Bible indexing tabs not used yet. Not sure if from the printer or the prior woner anyway not used yet. Any words spoken by the FatherSon or Holy Spirit are underlined. The text is color coded purple assigned to God Blue for Salvation Silver for History. There is a complete explanation of all this at the beginning of the book. The topbottom and side edges of the pages are gold. There are light scratch marks in the gilding. On the side edge of the pages slight wear to the gold perhaps by being touched. The pages are very thin material.The second page is for a dedication of "presented to" which has no writing. The page has been wrinkled up slightly near the binding. It has 19__ for the date. Page xc has a wrinkle visible front and back. When the actual Biblical text starts those pages seem to be of a little heavier texture and not inclined to wrinkle. All things considered it is a beautiful book. Rainbow Studies Hardcover

A most imposing large format family bible in an excellent state of preservation. John Brown 1754-1832 minister and theolgian was of humble origins and little formal education and worked as a shepherd in his early years. It was perhaps this background that led him to produce a well annotated bible intended to make it accesible to ordinary men and women: "The Self-Interpreting Bible remained in print until the twentieth century in much revised form. Brown transferred lists tables and other such aids from his dictionary. The Bible was a far more substantial work which did not prevent its becoming as Robert Burns bore out as familiar in Presbyterian households as John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and Thomas Boston's Human Nature in its Fourfold State. Brown's text was furnished with a battery of cross-references minor marginal notes short introductions to each book a summary of contents at the head of each chapter 'reflections' on each chapter—in effect applying its message to readers—and explanatory footnotes. A lengthy introduction deals with the Bible's authority and inspiration its interpretation and biblical history from creation.
