‎Lullus' Quattuor libri principiorum were developed from the Ars compendiosa inueniendi ueritatem. They were probably written in the period ca. 1274-1283. In these four books we find the main rules of Lullian Art in an early stage, as a muster of Lullus'universal knowledge system. These books are here set together to show the unity of method for theology, philosophy and justice. The traditional matters about medicine are explained with the existing logical constraints taken into account. The chapters on generation and corruption, fever, urine and pulse show the current theory of humours and the optimal levels of the four natural elements, preventive treatments, and the means to recover from illness. ‎Mit Band XXXIII erscheint der bislang umfangreichste Einzelband in der Reihe der Raimundi Lulli Opera latina. Er umfasst zunachst eine kurze Notiz zum Liber de militia saeculari (op. 7), von dem keine lateinische Version erhalten ist, obgleich die katalanische Originalfassung unter dem Titel Llibre de l'orde de cavalleria zu den am weitesten verbreiteten Werken Lulls gehort. Im Anschluss bietet der Band die lateinischen Ersteditionen der Opera 8 und 9, die Ramon Lull zwischen 1274 und 1276 verfasst hat: De doctrina puerili (op. 8) und Orationes et contemplationes intellectus (op. 9). Die Doctrina puerilis, die Lull als eine Art "Handbuch des Allgemeinwissens fur Kinder und Jugendliche" geschrieben und seinem Sohn gewidmet hat, bietet in 100 Kapiteln einen enzyklopadischen Uberblick sowohl uber die zentralen Inhalte des christlichen Glaubens als auch uber das Wissen seiner Zeit, wie es sich in den Artes liberales und den universitaren Wissenschaften manifestierte. Daruber hinaus stellt Lull allgemeine Beobachtungen uber das menschliche Leben an und gibt Empfehlungen moralischer Art wie auch Ratschlage zu Fragen der Gesundheit und Erziehung. Da das ursprunglich auf Katalanisch abgefasste Werk in drei unterschiedlichen lateinischen Ubersetzungen erhalten ist, hat der Editor sich entschlossen, eine vierspaltige Textausgabe zu erarbeiten, in der die katalanische Originalfassung zusammen mit den drei Ubersetzungen in synoptischem Druck erscheint. In den mystisch-spekulativen Orationes et contemplationes intellectus fuhren die drei Seelenkrafte Verstand, Gedachtnis und Wille ein allegorisches Gesprach in zehn Teilen. Diese sind der Existenz Gottes und seinen neun Grundwurden bonitas, magnitudo, aeternitas, potestas, sapientia, voluntas, perfectio, gloria und virtus gewidmet, zu deren Betrachtung sich der Verstand mit Hilfe der beiden anderen Seelenkrafte erhebt. Jahrhunderts erschienen sind. Der Conflictus Arnobii gewinnt uber seine Themen und die scharfsinnigen Argumentationsreihen der Dialogpartner hinaus noch an Interesse und Lebendigkeit durch die zahlreichen Zitate, die zur Untermauerung der Standpunkte vorgebracht werden, von Nestorius uber Cyrillus Alexandrinus (ep. 1 und homilia XVII) bis hin zu Augustin (sermo 369). ‎Eugenius, bishop of Toledo (probably around 657), was a leading figure in the Visigothic kingdom, and is considered one of the major poets of the seventh century. His poetic work, covering both religious and circumstantial themes, and his edition of the African poet Dracontius were widely read and imitated in Carolingian and Mozarabic circles, and some of his poems achieved an immense circulation throughout the Middle Ages. The present edition, which appears one hundred years after the last important edition (F. Vollmer, Berlin, 1905), covers Eugenius' complete works (carmina, the recensio of Dracontius' religious poems, the letters). It is based on a fresh and thorough study of the textual tradition. A good number of new manuscripts have been identified, ten of which are relevant for establishing and improving the text. The result is an enhanced text and a better and more accurate critical apparatus, expunged from superfluous material. The identification of new testimonia (mainly grammatical treatises and scholia) and imitatores (namely epigraphy) brings further elements to the history of Eugenius of Toledo's textual tradition. ‎Gerlach Peters (d. 1411) was a member of the so-called Devotio moderna. In the second half of the fourteenth century this religiuos reform movement arose in the Northern Netherlands, and strove after spiritual renewal for everyone. Its influence on the religious life of Northwestern Europe was considerable. Its most famous member was of course Thomas a Kempis. Gerlach Peters was a contemporary and colleague of Thomas. He is considered as the most important mystical author of the Devotio moderna. We dispose of two middle Dutch letters and two Latin works, Breuiloquium and Soliloquium. His Soliloquium was widely read in the Middle Ages, and it has been reprinted and translated up until today. This is the first critical edition of Gerlach Peters' Opera omnia, based on 72 extant manuscripts. The Middle Dutch letters are accompanied by a modern English translation, whereas the medieval translations of the Latin text have been critically edited. The book also contains an introduction, in which the life and work of Gerlach are treated. Attention is paid to the existing printings, reception and text history, genre and literary-historical aspects. Dividido en nueve libros, el Breuiariumes una 'biblia historial', a la manera de la Historia Scholasticade Pedro Comestor, su modelo y fuente principal y que, junto con la Glossa, constituye su columna vertebral. A partir de estas dos obras el Toledano incorpora buen numero de fuentes: Josefo, S. Jeronimo, S. Augustin, Beda, Origines, S. Gregorio, etc., a las que anade otras de su propria cosecha, como el Chroniconde S. Isidorio. D. Rodrigo, que habia estudiado en Bolonia y Paris, intenta, por una parte, introducir, en Espana las corrientes teologicas imperantes en la Europa de fines del s. ‎La tache de rassemblement et de mise en ordre des differentes pieces du corpus homiletique d'Aelred de Rievaulx (1110-1167), commence au tome precedent (CM 2 A) de ses Opera omnia, se poursuit maintenant par l'edition de trente-huit sermons, onze desquels etaient encore inedits. En tete du volume on trouvera la remarquable collection dite de Durham, constituee de facon semi-privee a l'intention probable de communautes monastiques amies de Grande Bretagne. Ce bel ensemble en forme d'annee liturgique n'etait jusqu'ici accessible que dans une edition partielle et provisoire de 1952. Vient ensuite une breve allocution pour la fete de l'Annonciation, conservee par les melanges reunis par Matthieu chantre de Rievaulx a la fin du 12e siecle. Acheve la publication une serie de cinq sermons inedits transmis par un manuscrit de la cathedrale de Lincoln. L'enseignement spirituel particulierement riche et elabore de ces divers textes s'inscrit dans le sillon de la tradition patristique, elargie et reajustee par la prise en compte des nouvelles perspectives degagees par la mystique bernardine. Avec une pleine maitrise de ses moyens d'expression, Aelred deploie au long de ces pages une noble eloquence, tout a la fois simple et raffinee, dans une langue et style petris de reminiscences et d'allusions bibliques puisees bien souvent a la liturgie. A la maniere augustinienne, l'Abbe de Rievaulx interpelle son auditoire tantot d'une maniere collective, tantot par l'usage du "tu" direct et individuel, tantot en employant le "nous" qui l'implique lui-meme dans son propos. Cela donne beaucoup de vivacite au discours, ranime l'attention, entretient le contact et donne au lointain lecteur l'impression d'etre lui aussi en quelque sorte parmi les presents. ‎Aelred de Rievaulx (1110-1167) vecut une grande partie de sa jeunesse a la cour du roi d'Ecosse. Il y etudia et y vecut dans l'amitie de ceux qui l'entouraient. Toutefois, en 1133, il entra a l'Abbaye de Rievaulx, pres de York, d'obedience cistercienne, filiale de l'Abbaye de Clairvaux. Apres avoir exerce la charge de Maitre des novices, il acceda a l'abbatiat de Reversby, maison-fille de Rievaulx dans le Lincolnshire, avant de revenir a Rievaulx, en 1146. Aelred est considere comme un des plus importants representants de la spiritualite monastique du XIIe siecle. Avec Bernard de Clairvaux, Guillaume de Saint-Thierry et Guerric d'Igny il fait partie de ces ecrivains qui constituent la "premiere generation" des auteurs spirituels cisterciens. Il composa de nombreux ecrits historiques, poetiques et religieux. Ses ?uvres se fondent sur une spiritualite d'une haute sensibilite personnelle dans lesquelles l'amitie humaine mene a l'amour de Dieu. ‎This volume is published after volumes 1-3, 10, 7-7A and 8. It is certain that Dat rijcke der ghelieven was Ruusbroec's first treatise and it was written in Brussels (possibly ca. 1338). His next work, Die geestelike brulocht, takes a good number of themes from the first treatise and expands them considerably, while the fundamental vision of the ordinary and mystical life of prayer is identical in the two works. The three levels of spiritual life (the 'active' life, the 'life of longing', and the 'superessential life'), forming the principal structure of Brulocht, are already determinative for the structure of the first treatise. However, the treatment of the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit in Rijcke is mainly a literary procedure. Ruusbroec's first audience of readers/listeners consisted of a few priests and their friends. The Middle Dutch text is based on a critical study of all manuscripts. Besides the Middle Dutch text the edition contains a new American-English translation and the Latin translation by L.Surius O.Carth (1552). The edition of the Middle Dutch text is critically recontructive. The text is accompanied by a variant apparatus, paleographic annotations, a source apparatus, a textcritical commentary and a lemmatized vocabulary with localizations. ‎In the 820s, Bishop Frechulf of Lisieux compiled a history of ancient times which he offered, when complete, as a school book for the young prince Charles the Bald. The work ranks as the most expansive historiographical achievement of the Carolingian Age. Its peculiar terminus in A.D. 609 has spurred much commentary, and also made it easy to ignore the Histories as a mere compilation disconnected from contemporary events. Yet by his choice and adjustment of sources, Frechulf used the past as a 'mirror' to address the present. He crafted a vision of history that superseded Rome-centered political myths and, with much else, acutely asserted for a court readership Augustine's ambiguity about political and religious community within a monolithic Christian res publica. Until now, scholars have misread and misjudged Frechulf owing to the absence of a complete and accurate edition of his works. The new text of the Histories fills major gaps, documents recensional variants evidenced in the rich manuscript tradition, and maps in varied typography Frechulf's use and remaking of his sources. The present volume also includes Frechulf's letter-request to Hrabanus Maurus for commentary on the Pentateuch, and the bishop's prologue to his own important recension of Vegetius' Epitoma rei militaris, a second offering to Charles the Bald, which circulated widely and served as the basis for the Italian translation of Vegetius by Bono Giamboni (ca. 1240-ca. 1292). ‎Ruusbroec puts the Netherlands on the map of worldliterature. His greatness as a mystic author has been acknowledged internationally. His work contains eleven treatises and eight letters. There have been two editions of his work so far: one by J.-B. David (1858-1868) and one by the Ruusbroecgenootschap (1932-1934). Neither of these editions meets the modern standards of a critical edition. Therefore a new edition was urgently needed. Of the ten volumes planned in this new edition, volumes five and six are the last to appear. The treatise Van den geesteliken tabernakel occupies a special place among Ruusbroec's works. It is not only the most extensive by far, but also the most complex on account of its intricate allegorical structure. Moreover, nowhere else is he so explicit about some points of his mystical doctrine. The Middle Dutch text is based on a critical study of all manuscripts. Besides the Middle Dutch text the edition contains a new American-English translation and the Latin translation by L. Surius O.Carth. (1552). The edition of the Middle Dutch text is critically reconstructive.
