‎M. Perez Gonzalez, E. Perez Rodriguez;‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. Lexicon Latinitatis Medii Aevi Regni Legionis (s. VIII-1230)‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2010 Hardback, LXXVII+805 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503534473.‎

‎Published in 2010, this Latin-Spanish lexicon, or more precisely Latin-Romance-Spanish, studies the vocabulary of historiographical and diplomatic texts written in the kingdom of Leon - with the exception of Galicia - between the eighth century and 1230, the date of the definitive union between the kingdoms of Leon and Castille. Each entry provides all the written variants of the term in question, its etymology, its meaning or meanings, numerous examples presented in relatively extended contexts, and thorough commentaries and linguistic and historical notes. As well as constituting an indispensable tool for anyone interested in the history of the kingdom of Leon, it also of wider interest, especially linguistic. Indeed, the texts analysed are written in a language that may be described as both 'Latino-Romance' and 'diplomatic medieval Latin' (Cf. Introduction, p. LXIII). ‎Corpus Christianorum. Isidorus Hispalensis Liber Differentiarum II,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1985 Hardback, CCCXXIV+128 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503011134.‎

‎The present volume contains the first critical edition of one of the treatises written by Isidore of Seville: the one modernly known as Liber de differentiis II, the first chapter of which is Inter Deum et Dominum. The work is offered here in the form that it is supposed to have had at the beginning of the seventh century, this is to say, separate from the book known as Liber de differentiis I (the first entry of which is Inter caelum et aethera according to the edition prepared by C. Codoner, Paris, 1992), and with which it seems not to have borne any immediate sequential relation in its origin, either in content or chronology. For the new establishment of the text, the editor has examined more than one hundred manuscripts from the eigtht to the sixteenth century, of which she has retained thirty three in the critical apparatus, all of them prior to the eleventh century. The text is therefore divided not into the traditional forty entries (cfr PL 83, 69-98), but into forty one. The editor also points out several fragments and chapters that were added to the original writing (this edition provides the reader with an appendix concerning the numbering of the text in chapters). The Latin text is preceded by an introduction divided into three sections (literary, linguistic and critical study). Since scholarly studies about this treatise were almost completely lacking, numerous aspects relative to its form, content and structure are clarified here. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1996 Hardback, CXX+501 p., + 15 pl., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503039213.‎

‎This edition renders the text of the Ghent manuscript in its final corrected form. The apparatus criticus contains the variant readings of the other early manuscripts. The great novelty is the apparatus correctionum: here all corrections in the Ghent manuscript are painstakingly noted with their extent, the technique used, the identification of the corrector and whenever possible, the text of the original, deleted version. The apparatus fontium, finally, identifies all of Hildegard's sources. The extensive introduction contains original studies by Peter Dronke (who also compiled the apparatus fontium) on the place of the LDO in the work of Hildegard, its originality, meaning and structure. Albert Derolez, who established the text and who is the author of the two other apparatuses provides a detailed analysis of the manuscripts, with special focus on the Ghent codex and its genesis and explains the edition technique adopted. ‎Corpus Christianorum. Joan Esteve The Liber elegantiarum by Joan Esteve A Catalan-Latin dictionary at the crossroads of fifteenth-century European culture,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2012 Hardback, CCXVI+439 p., 4 b/w ill., 230 x 310 mm. ISBN 9782503525860.‎

‎The Liber elegantiarum (Venice 1489), by the Valencian notary Joan Esteve (fl. c. 1442-1487), is an outstanding and quiet original product of early humanistic European lexicography. Conceived partly as a bilingual Catalan-Latin dictionary, it by far surpasses this goal to become in addition an epistolary manual and an aid to grammar, besides providing an often picturesque collection of humanist sayings and literary excerpts. Above all it offers dramatic evidence of the multifacetted expansion of Italian humanism and the crucial role played by the brilliant Neapolitan court of the King of Aragon. As a Romance lexicon, Joan Esteve?s work is also one of the first great repertories to include the vernacular as a source language (slightly after Tranchedini?s Vocabolario) and probably the first to be printed, before Palencia?s Universal Vocabulario (1490), Nebrija?s Dictionarium (c. 1495) or Valla da Girgenti?s Vocabularium vulgare (1500). This edition of the Liber elegantiarum is comprised of two main parts. The first consists of a complete introduction analysing the broad spectrum of its historical, textual and lexicographical aspects. After a revision of previous studies and comments on the Liber elegantiarum, a thorough description and collation of all extant copies confirm that this is indeed a unique Venetian edition, which can be reconstructed and explained by the new data provided. Information about the life and activities of the author, Joan Esteve, is also considerably expanded, namely concerning his stay in Italy and his various occupations in Naples, as a royal scribe and others, before practicing as a notary in Valencia. The work is conveniently framed within the context of the educational evolution in the late medieval period and its grammatical, rhetorical and lexicographical traditions, thus better identifying and evaluating the wide range of sources (from classical to mediaeval and humanist), that have been notably enlarged. Finally, the heterogeneous and loosely ?lexicographical? technique is examined in detail. The second part is a complete critical edition of the dictionary itself. The critical apparatus is primarily aimed at recording its very frequent printing errors and the alternative readings found in its numerous sources. These include a full range of genres (lexicography, grammar, rhetoric, chronicle, novel, theatre, dietetics) and of periods, from classical (Festus, Fulgentius, Nonius Marcellus) to medieval (Papias, the Catholicon), and especially humanistic authors (Barzizza, Caoursin, Facio, Fieschi, Filelfo father and son, Perotti, Piccolomini, Platina Poggio or Valla), systematically identified and reported in the apparatus fontium. In the complementary section of notes (Adnotationum) comment is offered on the adaptation of the source texts, many of them lacking critical editions and conveniently transcribed for the first time. Finally, a comprehensive Index fontium (of all souces and quotations) and a Bibliography are included. Languages: Latin, Spanish.‎

‎The edition includes the first critical edition of this treatise, a small biographical-exegetical handbook about the main characters of the Old and New Testaments. The parallellisms of style and contents, the considerable and remarkable use of apocryphal literature and above all, the textual transmission lead the editor to conclude that the opuscule dates back to the end of the eigth century and comes from an Irish centre of learning on the Continent, possibly situated within the area of influence of the episcopal see of Salzburg. This volume is the first in the new sub-series Scriptores Celtigenae. Languages: Latin.‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2007 Hardback, XXXIX+191 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503049519.‎

‎This volume contains a critical edition of two previously unedited anonymous poems, the Liber prefigurationum Christi et Ecclesie and the Liber de gratia Novi Testamenti. Both works seem to have been written in France during the reign of King Philip I (1060-1108). The Liber prefigurationum is a compendium of biblical typology. It versifies the most salient episodes of the Old Testament, from Genesis to Maccabees, as prefiguring the incarnation of Christ and the foundation of the Christian Church. The Liber de gratia presents the life of Christ from the point of view of its significance for all believers. Both poems are meant to educate their readers and guide them on their journey towards moral improvement and ultimate salvation. Languages: Latin, English.‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. Agnellus Ravennas Liber pontificalis Ecclesiae Ravennatis,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2006 Hardback, 393 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503049915.‎

‎The Liber pontificalis ecclesiae Ravennatis is written by Andreas Agnellus in the early ninth century. The text consists of introductory verses and a prologue, followed by a series of Lives of the forty-six bishops of Ravenna from the founding of the church of Ravenna by St. Apolenaris, supposedly a disciple of St. Peter, to Agnellus' own day. The introduction includes the following sections: 'I. Background'; 'II. The Text and its Sources', and 'III. Manuscripts, History of the Text, and Editions'. There are also two appendices: 'Animadversiones in seriem archiepiscoporum ecclesiae Ravennatis' and 'Descriptio nominum ecclesiarum et locorum in LPR laudatorum'. The Liber pontificalis ecclesiae Ravennatis is an essential source for the study of Italian history from the fourth to the ninth centuries. Agnellus seems to have been a well-born priest in the church of Ravenna, and his work is strongly colored by his personal experiences. He wrote it to demonstrate two strongly-held opinions. One of these was the apostolicity and independence of the Ravennate archbishopric; the other was the moral decline of recent bishops, and their erosion of clerical rights. Using the framework of a series of biographies of the bishops of his see, he presents his highly idiosyncratic view of history. The work is full of anecdotes, miracle stories, and mini-sermons, as well as information about historical events and artistic and architectural patronage, all of which have made it an invaluable source to scholars who study early medieval Italy. ‎Corpus Christianorum. Exegetica Liber questionum in euangeliis,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2004 Hardback, 832 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503512655.‎

‎Composed in about the year 725, the Liber Questionum in Euangeliis (LQE) is a comprehensive reference commentary on Matthew intended for ecclesiastics in the writing, teaching, and preaching professions. Its anonymous Irish redactor gathered together all the relevant patristic and native material available, adding to and adapting much of a still largely unpublished commentary on Matthew by the Hiberno-Latin writer Frigulus (fl. ca. 700). LQE's well-attested manuscript tradition and its far-flung exegetical influence make it one of the more intriguing texts to appear in the Scriptores Celtigenae series. Although LQE's origins are in Ireland (and one Irish fragment still survives), its manuscript families also include witnesses from England and the Continent. Not only is LQE a typical product of the early Irish church, but its considerable length, the variety of its sources, and its influence on later writers further reveal the work to be central to the entire early medieval Gospel commentary tradition. In addition to exegetes in England, the Carolingian writers Haimo of Auxerre (ob. 853), Rhabanus Maurus of Fulda (780-865), and especially Paschasius Radbertus of Corbie (ob. ca. 865) adapted it for their own works on Matthew. Rittmueller's painstakingly researched edition and introduction will serve as an invaluable resource in early medieval Biblical studies for decades to come. Languages: Latin.‎

‎William of Malmesbury's Commentary on Lamentations is one of the rare works of biblical commentary produced by an English Benedictine in the twelfth century. Surviving complete in a single manuscript, and in burnt fragments of another, it is here edited for the first time. Although the work is explicitly based upon the ninth-century commentary by Paschasius, it is enriched by William's own wide and deep reading of the Bible, the Fathers and the Latin Classics. Here we find the great historian grappling with theological and moral issues both universal and personal, as he attempts to understand God's disciplining of His people, whether understood as the Jews, the Church, or the English of William's own day.

Languages: Italian, Latin.‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. Logica antiquioris mediae aetatis I Excerpta isagogarum et categoriarum,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1995 Hardback, CXVIII+193 p., + 16 pl., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503042015.‎

‎Corpus Christianorum. Iohannes de Caulibus Meditaciones vite Christi olim S. Bonaventurae attributae,‎

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1997 Hardback, XXIII+389 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503045313.‎

‎The first critical text of the widely and enormously influential Meditaciones vite Christi responds to a declared desideratum of scholars in a large number of disciplines dealing with devotional and mystical literature of the Middle Ages. A medieval 'bestseller' at one time attributed to Saint Bonaventure, this text at last sheds its neo-Latin overlay and sets in charming outline a synthesis of the new Franciscan movement. After examining over 100 manuscripts, Stallings-Taney has identified 4 manuscripts which contain a text unaltered by neo-Latin standards. She has collated these 4 as well as 7 fourteenth and fifteenth century manuscripts (edited as early as the fourteenth century according to neo-Latin standards) against the Vatican 1596 recension. The consensus of the early 4 manuscripts sets in place the original Italianized Latin of John of Caulibus, a humble Tuscan Franciscan, who had no other goal than the spiritual direction of an unknown Poor Clare nun. The consensus of the later manuscripts, recorded in the critical apparatus, preserves the neo-Latin text known to such translators as J. Meadows Cowper and Nicholas Love. Additionally, Stallings-Taney has re-established several lengthy passages once a part of the original text, but dropped in some of the printed recensions. Of special interest to liturgists is the extensive Index locorum liturgiae as well as the Index locorum S. Scripturae. An Instrumenta Lexicologica Latina fascicle will also be available very soon.

‎Turnhout, Brepols, 1994 Hardback, LXV+225 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503043111.‎

‎Rider's edition is the first to be based on representatives of both the Multrum's manuscript traditions since the Bollandists' heavily emended seventeenth-century edition. It offers the first complete and accurate critical apparatus for the text including all the variants of the existing manuscripts and early editions. It also takes into account emendations suggested by scholars since the mid-nineteenth century (Kopke, Pirenne, Thomas and Ross). Readers are thus provided with all the surviving textual evidence and may evaluate for themselves the editor's decisions. Rider's text also indicates, for the first time, the original divisions of the Multrum and reveals Galbert's principles of organization and composition. This volume likewise contains the first edition of the surviving first third of a 15th-century French translation of the Multrum, printed facing the corresponding Latin text. The introduction discusses Galbert, Charles the Good and the historical context, the composition and the textual tradition of the Multrum. The volume includes a bibliography of scholarly works devoted principally to an interpretation or discussion of all or part of the Multrum new maps of early-twelfth-century Bruges and Flanders, genealogies of the count of Flanders (1035-1168) and the Erembalds, and an exhaustive index of names and places and references to nameless representatives of various social groups (like armigeri, ancillae, the clerus Brugensis and milites) which will be of particular use to social historians. ‎Turnhout, Brepols, 2006 Hardback, L+370 p., 155 x 245 mm. ISBN 9782503516660.‎

‎As Ireland's contribution to the international enterprise of compiling a "new Du Cange", the Royal Irish Academy has for nearly a generation been sponsoring the Dictionary of Medieval Latin from Celtic Sources project. This venture is designed to provide, for the Celtic territories, the lexicographical coverage of Medieval Latin that is (for example) coming to be furnished for German-speaking lands by the Mittellateinisches Worterbuch, or for England by the British Academy's well-known DMLBS venture. NCLCL, the Non-Classical Lexicon of Celtic Latinity (1st volume: letters A to H), by Anthony Harvey and Jane Power, offers a detailed, authoritative description, in standard lexicographical form, of the etymology, meaning and usage of thousands of words found in the DMLCS electronic archive that are absent altogether from the Oxford Latin Dictionary, having been coined after the period covered by that work. NCLCL also embodies a comprehensive register of words that are found in standard Latin but that appear, in texts of Celtic provenance, in orthographies or forms that cannot be accounted for by mainstream European developments in Medieval Latin.
