Wharton, Anne Hollingsworth
In Chateau Land
Philadelphia and London: J. B. Lippincott Company 1911. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Octavo. 183 pages. Hardcover in burgundy cloth. Binding is rubbed and bumped and text block is a bit cocked but is still sound. Top edge of text block is gilt which is scuffed and dulled. Prior owner's stamp mark on front and rear pastedowns. There is an early pencil signature on the front flyleaf "Edwin Markham". We're not sure if this is real or a forgery. We've compared it to online copies and there are similarities and differences. Our guess is that it is not real but it's an interesting addition. Text is toned with occasional foxing. Pages 68/69 have a newspaper clipping between them and the pages have turned darker where the clipping has been. Text is still legible.

J. B. Lippincott Company hardcover

Hogg, James
The Jacobite Relics of Scotland

Edinburgh: William Blackwood. and T. Cadell and W. Davies. 1819. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Being the Songs Airs and Legends of the Adherents to the House of Stuart. 8vo library rebound in brown cloth with gilt titles on spine and name on cover. Xx 424pp. With an index of song titles at the front. Words and music for 90 songs followed by historical and anecdotal notes some detailing when a song was first heard any references to well-known figures etc. Then follows two appendices one of Jacobite songs and one of Whig songs. Ex reference library with a single stamp at the front and rear of the book upper edge blind stamp on title page handwritten numbers on reverse of title page. No other obvious library markings. Occasional foxing generally very good and clean inside. "These songs are moreover a species of composition entirely by themselves. They have no affinity with our ancient ballads of heroism and romance; and one part of them far less with the mellow strains of our pastoral and lyric muses. Their general character is that of a rude energetic humour that bids defiance to all opposition in arms sentiments or rules of song-writing. They are the unmasked effusions of a bold and primitive race…" . Hogg states in this introduction that he first of all concerns himself with songs that are apparently of the earliest date. A second series was published in 1821. Fascinating to see some that have lasted and others within a historical context.
William Blackwood. and T. Cadell and W. Davies. hardcover

The Story of Ireland's National Theatre: The Abbey Theatre Dublin
New York: Haskell House Pubishers. Very Good. 1970. Reprint. Hardcover. 0838310893 . Hardcover issued without a jacket reprint of this scarce scholarly title that was first published in 1929 the illustrations include a frontis photo of the Abbey Theatre but they do not include the Sean O'Casey plate that should appear on page 128 we don't notice any evidence of removal so this is probably a publishing flaw the blue cloth has moderate surface-rubbing at the corners the binding is tight the contents are unmarked and there are no other remarkable flaws; 196 pages .
