The most important Flemish painter of the 17th century, Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), was already considered one of the most learned representatives of his guild during his lifetime, as he was likely to have dealt with theoretical questions of his art. So far, only sparse written evidence of often questionable authenticity has been used as evidence. For the first time, the work systematically puts a series of previously inadequately interpreted handwritten main mythological works in a common context and analyzes them in detail against the background of the theory of the 16th and 17th centuries, which was mostly associated with Italian art. The author succeeds in showing that the relatively "new" genre of mythological histories in the Netherlands around 1600 gave the painter extensive freedom in terms of form and content to construct novel and unusual pictorial statements. The paintings examined testify to Rubens' differentiated and comprehensive theoretical reflection on the power and possibilities of his art in the medium he is most familiar with, painting itself.

KAREL MAES 1900 - 1974. Schilderijen en grafiek
oorspronkelijk geïllustreerde omslag, 195 x 200mm., 20pp., geillustreerd in z/w. Karel Maes (1900-1974) maakte, samen met onder meer Jozef Peeters (1895-1960), deel uit van de eerste Belgische generatie van geometrisch abstracte schilders. Tegelijkertijd ontpopte hij zich ook als graficus. Zo ontwierp hij illustraties voor talloze Belgische avant-gardetijdschriften zoals Lumiere, Ruimte, Ca Ira, Het Overzicht en De Driehoek en 7 Arts. In diezelfde periode breidde hij z???n oeuvre nog uit door z'n specifieke abstracte beeldentaal te combineren met het ontwerpen van meubels, glasramen en tapijten. Doordat Karel Maes zich vanaf het einde van de jaren twintig meer en meer isoleerde van de kunstwereld, raakte z'n werk onvermijdelijk in een vergeethoekje. Toch hield hij nooit op met schilderen en ontwerpen. Kleurrijke neerslag van de recente beeldenstorm van kunstenaar Fred Bervoets Schilder en graficus Fred Bervoets (1942) kan terugblikken op een carrière van ruim een halve eeuw. Aanvankelijk gold hij vooral als een volbloed schilder, maar in de jaren tachtig verbaasde hij vriend en vijand met grootse etsen die een picturale benadering koppelden aan grafisch meesterschap. De afgelopen maanden werkte Bervoets haast routineus aan zijn etsen op groot formaat, maar 's nachts laat hij zijn verbeelding volledig de vrije loop. Het resultaat van dat zijdelingse teken- en schilderwerk vult ondertussen zowat het hele gelijkvloers van zijn atelierwoning: honderden tekeningen, schetsen, krabbels en schilderijtjes die, afgezien van hun maker, slechts één ding met elkaar gemeen hebben: hun bescheiden A4-formaat. Born in Antwerp, Jules Schmalzigaug was a well-travelled Belgian futurist painter who came of age at the turn of the 20th century. He lived for a time in Paris, but eventually moved to Venice to participate in the Italian avant-garde art scene. Following the outbreak of the First World War, he relocated to the Netherlands and began experimenting with light and colour. Declared unfit for military service, he became lonely and fell into depression, and committed suicide in 1917. Forgotten for a time, his work was rediscovered in 1980 and has since appeared in international exhibitions on futurism. This monograph on Schmalzigaug contributes to a wider appreciation for his artistic genius. // Belgisch kunstenaar Jules Schmalzigaug (1882, Antwerpen) groeit op in een welgesteld milieu in het Antwerpse fin-de-siècle. Hij reist door Italië en Duitsland, leeft een ijd in Parijs, en installeert zich uiteindelijk in Venetië. Daar maakt hij al snel deel uit van een groep jonge avant-gardekunstenaars die de strijd aangaan met het nostalgische passeïsme. Hij is de eerste Belg die deelneemt aan de Italiaanse futuristische beweging. Na de uitbraak van de Eerste Wereldoorlog werkt hij verder in Nederland aan zijn intrigerende experimenten met licht en kleur. Op vierendertigjarige leeftijd pleegt Schmalzigaug zelfmoord en daarmee komt een abrupt eind aan een veelbelovende carrière. Het werk van Jules Schmalzigaug wordt in 1980 herontdekt: verschillende van zijn werken worden getoond op de grote overzichtstentoonstelling Futurismo & Futurismi in het Palazzo Grassi in Venetië in 1986. En ook in eigen land wordt hij - na tentoonstellingen in Brussel, Gent en Oostende - eindelijk erkend als een van de belangrijkste Belgische voorlopers van de modernistische avant-garde. Deze nieuwe, ambitieuze publicatie hoopt bij te dragen aan de internationale waardering die Jules Schmalzigaug verdient. De uitgave bestaat uit twee delen in een foedraal. Le sculpteur Reinhoud d'Haese est ne en 1928 a Geraardsbergen, en Flandre-Orientale. Il fait ses debuts a Bruxelles chez un orfevre, puis frequente l'Ecole Nationale Superieure d'Architecture et des Arts Decoratifs de Bruxelles ou il apprend le travail du metal en sculpture. En 1950, il rejoint les Ateliers du Marais a Bruxelles, sorte de pepiniere du groupe Cobra, ou il participe activement a la transformation des ateliers en centre destine a recevoir des artistes. C'est la qu'il rencontre, entre autres, Christian Dotremont, Luc de Heusch, Hugo Claus et Pierre Alechinsky, artistes qui l'accompagneront tout au long de sa carriere. Apres la dispersion des Ateliers du Marais, la galerie experimentale Taptoe a Bruxelles organise en 1956 une exposition entierement consacree a Reinhoud. Il recoit alors le prix de la Critique belge. Ce qui l'inspire, ce sont les insectes : Moustique et Fouineur sont les titres d'oeuvres qu'il y expose. A partir de cette epoque, Reinhoud va de plus en plus laisser libre cours a son imagination, jusqu'a creer une galerie de sculptures, d'animaux, de plantes, et surtout de personnages, sorte de catalogue de caracteres dans la tradition de La Bruyere. In 1940 en 1943 was hij Tweede Prijs van Rome. In 1945 was hij medestichter van La Jeune Peinture Belge, maar trok er zich in 1947, samen met Luc Peire en Jack Godderis uit terug. Vanaf 1950 verliet hij de donkere Permekekleuren om te evolueren naar het rijke en zonnige coloriet dat zijn latere werk kenmerkte. In 1950 behaalde hij de Tweede prijs voor landschapsschilderen in Santa Marghereta (Italie) en in 1953 verbleef hij lange tijd in de Provence. De voornaamste thema's van zijn schilderijen zijn het landschap, het stilleven, het portret en het naakt. Hij portretteerde onder meer Herman Teirlinck, Stijn Streuvels en Jan Vercammen. Slabbinck produceerde ook talrijke tekeningen en litho's. Eind jaren 60 bezochten Simon Vinkenoog en Lies Westenburg (VPRO) zijn atelier in Brugge voor een tv-reportage, die in Nederland werd uitgezonden. In 1992 werd in Brugge een vereniging Rik Slabbinck opgericht met het doel zijn gedachtenis in ere te houden.
