Maar in de twintigste eeuw werd de band tussen actuele kunst en Kerk minder vanzelfsprekend. Behalve enkele monumenten en liturgische voorwerpen is sinds het begin van de vorige eeuw niets nieuws toegevoegd aan het patrimonium. In november 2015 zal de Antwerpse kathedraal een kunstwerk rijker zijn: Jan Fabre's bronzen sculptuur De man die het kruis draagt (2015) krijgt dankzij een mecenas een vaste plaats in de kathedraal. Een werk van Fabre in een religieus gebouw? Dat is misschien minder opzienbarend dan het lijkt. Fabre beschrijft zich als een spiritual sceptic - een spirituele scepticus. Zoekend naar zin in het bestaan bekent hij zich niet tot een godsdienst of levensbeschouwelijk systeem. Maar hij stelt zich open voor de transcendentie die het leven verheft. In zijn oeuvre boort Jan Fabre bronnen uit de christelijke en andere religieuze tradities aan. Zoals zovelen van onze tijdgenoten bouwt hij tegelijk een zekere afstand in, blijft hij de scepticus die in vraag stelt en twijfelt. Niet toevallig benadrukt de kunstenaar het zoeken naar balans als hij spreekt over zijn beeld -De man die het kruis draagt is letterlijk een evenwichtsoefening, net zoals het geloof dat vandaag is. Aan de hand van verschillende essays en groot formaat foto's toont deze uitgave hoe de spirituele zoektocht van Jan Fabre een 'work in progress' is, net zoals het spiritueel zoeken van anderen in verleden en heden dat was en is.

Fully authorized by artist Jean-Jacques Lebel--Robert Lebel's son--and the Association Marcel Duchamp, the facsimile is accompanied by a supplement volume of essays and archival material that tells the story of Duchamp and Lebel's close collaboration, and, as contributor Michael Taylor writes, how the original publication signified a sea change in the artist's receptivity to critical interpretation. The supplement includes texts by both Robert and Jean-Jacques Lebel and a newly discovered note by Man Ray, among a bevy of photographs from the Lebel and Duchamp archives, extending the story presented in the 1959 edition. To achieve a near-exact facsimile, fluid consulted with paper conservators and printers to recreate the book with modern materials that match those available in 1959.
