‎Pierre-Louis Flouquet, Lajos Kassákand Jos Léonard were three visual artists and graphic designers who shaped the interwar years by harnessing the endless possibilities of the line and the plane, and the circle, triangle and square.They shared the conviction that geometric abstraction could bea blueprint for a renewed society after the First World War.It was a message that was advanced through the international avantgarde network of magazines that included, amongst others, Kassák's MA, the Brussels-based 7 Arts with Flouquet as artistic director and Het Overzicht run by Jozef Peeters and Michel Seuphor in Antwerp, with Léonard as an occasional contributor. For Constructivist artists there was no clear distinction between West and East, or centre and periphery. 'Connection' was the keyword, for example between the Belgian and Hungarian avantgarde movements in Antwerp, Brussels, Budapest and Vienna. Pierre-Louis Flouquet, Lajos Kassák en Jos Léonard zijn drie beeldende kunstenaars en grafische ontwerpers die na de Eerste Wereldoorlog een nieuwe wereld wilden creëren vanuit de eindeloze mogelijkheden van de lijn, het vlak, de cirkel, de driehoek en het vierkant. ‎Il y a près d?un siècle, l?avant-garde fleurissait à Bruxelles. En 1922, Pierre et Victor Bourgeois, Pierre-Louis Flouquet, Karel Maes et Georges Monier lançaient la revue 7 Arts dont l?influence allait être considérable. Les cinq Bruxellois furent des avocats passionnés de la Plastique pure (autrement dit l?abstraction géométrique) et défendirent une synthèse de tous les arts: peinture, sculpture, arts décoratifs, littérature, musique et cinéma, le tout vu au travers de l?architecture et de l?urbanisme. Leur journal deviendra rapidement une plateforme essentielle à la promotion de la modernité, en Belgique bien sûr, mais également dans l?Europe entière. L?exposition mêlera tout à la fois des grands noms de l?histoire de l?architecture et de l?histoire de l?art belge, et des acteurs moins connus de l?avant-garde. On y croisera les 5 fondateurs de 7 Arts ainsi que leurs compagnons de route : Victor Servranckx, René Magritte, Marcel-Louis Baugniet, Felix De Boeck, Huib Hoste, Jean-Jacques Gaillard, Stanislas Jasinski, Jozef Peeters et bien d?autres. En 1922, à Bruxelles, cinq très jeunes artistes, le poète Pierre Bourgeois, son frère, l?architecte Victor Bourgeois, les peintres Pierre-Louis Flouquet et Karel Maes ainsi que le musicien et critique Georges Monier, fédèrent une partie de l?avant-garde belge autour d?une revue hebdomadaire, 7 Arts. La publication se veut pluridisciplinaire et a pour objectif central la promotion de la Plastique pure, c?est-à-dire l?abstraction géométrique appliquée à tous les arts. Ce qui s?accompagne d?un positionnement social, voire politique: la Plastique pure doit envahir la ville et créer un rapport nouveau entre le citadin et son environnement, qu?il soit urbain ou domestique. Deux disciplines sont particulièrement représentées: le cinéma, qui est un art nouveau où tout est possible et, surtout, l?architecture, qui, sur les ruines de la Grande Guerre, se réinvente complètement. C?est là une des singularités de la revue: juxtaposer l?architecture ? avec ses exigences techniques et la nécessaire rigueur de son dessin ? et les autres arts. Et de fait, parmi les membres du groupe ou ceux qui en sont proches, il n?est pas rare que les peintres s?essaient à l?architecture, que les architectes dessinent des meubles, que les écrivains théorisent l?architecture ou la subliment dans leurs poèmes... ‎At a first viewing of Dirk Vander Eecken's recent work, I was peripherally reminded of the edition "Erster Blick" (2000) of the German artist Gerhard Richter. This simple appropriation of a page from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung shows a photo with a text fragment of the first image of the inside of an atom, made by scientists at the University of Augsburg. It is an edition in which Gerhard Richter expresses his fascination for what underlies the material world, or what it is made up of. Concrete reality is tipped over through a microscopic examination that creates a mysterious image which evades all human control. Gerhard Richter also painted, after an illness, snow landscapes that conjure up a similar fascination with a landscape that exists but is temporarily covered with a layer of white snow. In a similar way, the oeuvre of Dirk Vander Eecken is an attempt at creating a continuum, an attempted contemplation of "realities" that directly opposes the routinous perception of the overpressurised rustling reality that surrounds us. / Bij een eerste blik op het recente werk van Dirk Vander Eecken moest ik zijdelings denken aan de editie Erster Blick (2000) van de Duitse kunstenaar Gerhard Richter. Deze eenvoudige toe-eigening van een deeltje van een pagina uit de Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung toont een foto met tekstfragment van de eerste afbeelding van de binnenkant van een atoom gemaakt door wetenschappers aan de Universiteit van Augsburg. Het is een editie waarin Gerhard Richter zijn fascinatie toont voor de achter- en binnenkant van de materiële wereld. Het concrete kantelt via electromicroscopische waarneming in een mysterieus beeld waarop de mens alle greep verliest. Gerhard Richter schilderde na een ziekte ook sneeuwlandschappen waar eenzelfde fascinatie wordt opgeroepen voor een landschap dat er is maar tijdelijk bedekt is met een laag witte sneeuw. Op een gelijkaardige manier is het oeuvre van Dirk Vander Eecken een poging tot continuüm, een trachten kijken naar 'werkelijkheden' dat haaks staat op de routineuze perceptie van de ons omringende, overdruk ruisende werkelijkheid.‎

The ephemeral character of Barrio's installations compels the artist to seek alternative documentary techniques: photo, film, the artist's book, etc. In this respect, as well as in his approach to material and what is known as the 'didactic' mission, there are similarities in his work, in content and form, to that of Joseph Beuys (b. 1921 Krefeld - d. 1986 Dusseldorf). The 'Barrio - Beuys' exhibition presents the work of these two artists for the first time in an 'imaginary dialogue'. Het efemere karakter van Barrio's installaties verplichten de kunstenaar te zoeken naar alternatieve documentatietechnieken: foto, film, kunstenaarsboek,... ‎Wie het eerste deel van het boek bekijkt, zal merken dat Robert Devriendt zijn reeksen minischilderijen ziet als scènes van een groot verhaal, als verschillende hoofdstukken van een roman of film. De schilder schort in die reeksen het lineaire tijdsverloop op, zoomt in op geheimzinnige details (een supermooie auto, de ?perfecte? blonde vrouw, een bos, een taxidermist, een bebloed T-shirt ?), alludeert op oude schilderijen, tv-beelden, reclamefoto?s, films, populaire bladen ?Er zijn wellicht verbanden, maar welke? Er is een scenario, maar waarvan? Wat er zeker is: de zorgvuldige aandacht en de sensuele liefde voor het schilderen, het strelen van de huid van het doek, dat hunkert naar een creatieve waarnemer. In het tweede deel van het boek bewegen zestien Nederlandstalige dichters en prozaschrijvers zich spiegelend in het intieme spanningsveld tussen de beeldengroepen, ze construeren zélf een film. De film van Robert Devriendt, die bij de aftiteling alweer verdwijnt, tot alleen een uitgezuiverde leegte overblijft, een enigmatische ervaring van wat rest. ‎Daniel Colin was born in 1963 and was primarily influenced creatively by the 1980s growing up. The 1980s were a tumultuous period culturally, and were marked by growing global capitalism, global mass media, significant discrepancies in wealth, alongside a distinctive sense of music and fashion, epitomised by electronic pop music and hip hop. Artists growing up during this time were heavily influenced by this cultural atmosphere. The 1980s were a significant decade politically, marked by the African Famine and the end of the Cold War, which was signified by the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Neo Geo and The Pictures Generation became leading art movements during the decade, alongside Neo-Expressionism which became well-known in Germany, France and Italy (where it was known as Transavanguardia). Artists such as Anselm Kiefer, Jörg Immendorf, Enzo Cucchi, Francesco Clemente and Julian Schnabel were leading artists of the era, alongside Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Kenny Scharf, who established the street art and graffiti movements.‎

‎In 1912-1913, James Ensor produced a series of 32 drawings in coloured pencil titled Scènes de la vie du Christ [Scenes from the life of Christ]. Each drawing on paper measures about 15 by 21 cm. The series depicts different episodes from the lives of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. In it, Ensor managed to combine the sublime and the grotesque in an unsurpassed manner. Some compositions are quite conventional, others typically 'Ensorian', and some even humorous. Among the works in the series is a drawing in which Ensor portrays him-self as Christ, confronted with a dozen Belgian art critics who have gathered before him. In 1929 the drawings were made into lithographs and published in the form of an album by Galerie Georges Giroux in Brussels. These drawings can be considered as a link between the Ostend master's early and later oeuvre. The series combines various motifs which Ensor also executed in oil paint. The author of the work, Xavier Tricot, also pays close attention to the figure of Christ in James Ensor's work. From 1885 onward, the figure of Christ occupied a central position in Ensor's oeuvre.
