‎In 2013, sculptor and visual artist Philip Aguirre y Otegui built a natural spring in the slums of Douala, Cameroon's largest city. The object is a functional and aesthetic whole comprising a laundry station, open-air theatre, and gathering place. It came about as part of SUD2010 (Salon Urbain de Douala), for which the artist was invited by curator Koyo Kouoh to design a project. ‎Born in Antwerp, Jules Schmalzigaug was a well-travelled Belgian futurist painter who came of age at the turn of the 20th century. He lived for a time in Paris, but eventually moved to Venice to participate in the Italian avant-garde art scene. Following the outbreak of the First World War, he relocated to the Netherlands and began experimenting with light and colour. Declared unfit for military service, he became lonely and fell into depression, and committed suicide in 1917. Forgotten for a time, his work was rediscovered in 1980 and has since appeared in international exhibitions on futurism. This monograph on Schmalzigaug contributes to a wider appreciation for his artistic genius. // Belgisch kunstenaar Jules Schmalzigaug (1882, Antwerpen) groeit op in een welgesteld milieu in het Antwerpse fin-de-siècle. Hij reist door Italië en Duitsland, leeft een ijd in Parijs, en installeert zich uiteindelijk in Venetië. Daar maakt hij al snel deel uit van een groep jonge avant-gardekunstenaars die de strijd aangaan met het nostalgische passeïsme. Hij is de eerste Belg die deelneemt aan de Italiaanse futuristische beweging. Na de uitbraak van de Eerste Wereldoorlog werkt hij verder in Nederland aan zijn intrigerende experimenten met licht en kleur. Op vierendertigjarige leeftijd pleegt Schmalzigaug zelfmoord en daarmee komt een abrupt eind aan een veelbelovende carrière. Het werk van Jules Schmalzigaug wordt in 1980 herontdekt: verschillende van zijn werken worden getoond op de grote overzichtstentoonstelling Futurismo & Futurismi in het Palazzo Grassi in Venetië in 1986. En ook in eigen land wordt hij - na tentoonstellingen in Brussel, Gent en Oostende - eindelijk erkend als een van de belangrijkste Belgische voorlopers van de modernistische avant-garde. ‎Het Maerkdal is een gebied met een rijke geschiedenis. Het dal en de rivier ontwikkelden zich in een tijdsbestek van vele, vele eeuwen. Uiteindelijk ontstond een beekdallandschap met een meanderend riviertje met drassige oevers, een landschap met dekzandruggen en donken. Zo?n 40.000 jaar geleden zijn er Neanderthalers in het Markdal geweest. Vanaf de midden-steentijd tot het einde van de Romeinse tijd (ca. 410) woonden mensen in het Markdal en lieten hun sporen na. Ongeveer in 550 keerden de mensen hier terug om vanaf toen tot nu toe het landschap met het riviertje naar hun hand te zetten. Boeren bewerkten gedurende vele eeuwen hun land en woonden in verspreid liggende hoeven of in nederzettingen, die in de loop van de eeuwen uitgroeiden tot dorpen en gehuchten. De abdij van Thorn vanaf de 11e eeuw en de heer van Breda vanaf de 12e eeuw probeerden zoveel mogelijk invloed en macht te verwerven. Vanaf de 14e eeuw ontstonden er in het Markdal landgoederen. Grote invloed hadden de gevolgen van de Vrede van Munster in 1648, ook voor de band met Meersel-Dreef. Aan veel macht en privileges kwam in 1794-95 een einde. Vooral in de 20e eeuw ging de ontwikkeling snel: in de landbouw, de inrichting van het landschap, de ontwikkeling van de dorpen en gehuchten. Positief wat bestaanszekerheid en welvaart betreft, negatief vaak voor het beekdallandschap en de natuur. In het derde decennium van de 21e eeuw moet een nieuw evenwicht tussen natuur, economie, cultuur en leefbaarheid tot stand komen.‎

‎Vekemans' forte is painting. His earlier work consisted mainly of gouaches on cartridge paper but nowadays he mostly paints with oil on canvas or behind glass and some work and/or studies using mixed techniques: gouache, aquarelle, and ink on paper. "In my paintings, I believe it is the image that counts, not the message. I do not want to express social commitment through my work. Reality is more overwhelming than imagination. How the paint was applied to the surface tells the story, not the actual rendering which is only of secondary importance." Vekemans has chosen resolutely for figurative painting. Images he found or images stored in his memory, but always recognisable and distilled from what is called "real life". He records these images using his own, personal style and without overshadowing conceptualism. His work does not make any sharp criticism, metaphoric reflection, and sociological considerations. Bruno Vekemans is only interested in the actual image, the picture that acquires power and authority through its own content. He shows scenes from reality which will make you quiver with emotion. His paintings depict moments of tranquility and intimacy although they are placed within the context of activity. Some viewers may experience melancholy, quietness or a special atmosphere but this is real beauty in the eyes of Bruno Vekemans. His palette reveals much about him: colours that balance between opening and covering but which are always intense and convincing. ---- Vekemans? grote sterkte is schilderen. Zijn vroege werk bevatte hoofdzakelijk gouache op cartridge papier, terwijl hij vandaag grotendeels werkt met olie op canvas of achter glas. Voor sommige werken/studies gebruikt hij gemixte technieken: gouache, aquarel en inkt op papier. ?In mijn schilderijen, is het naar mijn mening vooral het beeld dat telt, niet de boodschap. Ik wil geen sociaal engagement uiten door mijn werk. De realiteit is overweldigender dan de verbeelding. Hoe de verf aangebracht wordt op het oppervlak vertelt het verhaal, de uiteindelijke weergave is van minder belang.? Vekemans kiest resoluut voor figuratief schilderen. Beelden die hij vond en opsloeg in zijn geheugen, maar die steeds herkenbaar zijn en gedistilleerd zijn uit wat we ?real life? noemen. Hij legt deze beelden vast met zijn eigen persoonlijke stijl, zonder het conceptualisme te overschaduwen. Zijn werk maakt geen scherpe kritieken, doet geen metaforische reflecties of sociologische bedenkingen. Bruno Vekemans is enkel geïnteresseerd in het echte beeld, het beeld dat kracht en autoriteit uitstraalt door zijn eigen inhoud. Hij toon scenes uit de realiteit die je doen trillen van emotie. Zijn schilderijen geven momenten van rust en intimiteit weer, zelfs wanneer ze in een actieve context geplaatst zijn. Sommige kijkers zullen melancholie, stilte en een speciale atmosfeer ervaren, maar dit is echte schoonheid gezien door de ogen van Bruno Vekemans. Zijn palet onthult veel over hem: kleuren die balanceren tussen openen en afdekken maar die steeds intens en overtuigend zijn. Over de kunstenaar: Bruno Vekemans maakt deel uit van een lange traditie van Vlaamse schilders, een traditie die nooit doorbroken werd, zelfs niet toen de schilderkunst dood werd verklaard. Vekemans behoort wel tot die generatie die het uitermate moeilijk heeft gehad om als schilder aanvaard te worden. De Amerikaanse kunstcriticus Irving Sandler schreef over die periode: ?Schilderen in het pluralistische tijdperk heeft het voordeel dat de kunstenaars vrijer dan ooit kunnen schilderen, in de veronderstelling dat elke stijl een min of meer eerlijke waardering zal krijgen. Het nadeel is echter dat kunstenaars, zelfs de meest individuele en volwaardige onder hen, het steeds moeilijker vinden om de aandacht van de kunstwereld op zich te vestigen en erdoor erkend te worden.? Vekemans oeuvre heeft, vanaf het moment dat hij z?n drolerieën tekent in de jaren ?70 tot vandaag, een coherent verloop gekend, een bijna logische evolutie waarin slechts één grote breuk merkbaar was. Die breuk situeert zich rond 1989, toen hij besliste om de schilderkunst schilderkunst te laten zijn en geen voorwendsel om extra-picturale verhalen, kritieken of analyses te maken. Die keuze is hij de volgende twintig jaar radicaal blijven verdedigen. Maar zelfs de breuk verhindert niet dat er ook dan continuïteit in zijn werk aanwezig blijft. Hij is de collagetechniek blijven hanteren, niet enkel technisch, als voorontwerp voor zijn schilderijen, maar - onbewust - ook filosofisch, als het samplen van de beeldcultuur van zijn tijd. Hij wordt een picturale bricoleur, in de zin zoals Claude Lévi-Strauss respectvol bedoelde in La Pensée Sauvage, een man die met de handen werkt en bestaande dingen bij elkaar brengt tot iets nieuws. Vekemans is geen filosoof, geen geschoold virtuoos schilder, geen onderdeel van de artistieke beau monde, maar een werker die gefascineerd is door de beelden van zijn tijd, die hij obsessief herhaalt en herneemt, in een sober, harmonieus palet. ‎Matthieu Ronsse (1981) is een Belgisch kunstenaar. Zijn schilderijen lijken vaak onafgewerkt en bevatten referenties naar oude meesters, fragmenten uit zijn privéleven of knipsels uit fotografie- en architectuurboeken. Vaak scheurt hij de werken, of snijdt hij ze in stukken; soms laat hij ze zelfs door regen en wind verweren. Ronsse gaat een confrontatie met de schilderkunst aan en stelt al haar kwaliteiten in vraag ? materialen, technieken, onderwerpen en geschiedenis. Het boek A Procession of Lobsters geeft een overzicht van het werk dat Matthieu Ronsse in situ maakte: in een tankstation in Oudenaarde, in de villa van een verzamelaar, in een cateringbedrijf, in wachttorens en kubussen. Of in zijn eigen huis en ?nomadisch atelier? in Poesthem. Schrijver en dichter Maarten Inghels bezocht al deze plekken en sprak uitgebreid met hun bewoners, Ronsse incluis. Volgens Matthieu Ronsse blijft zijn werk onveranderlijk maar zijn het de bezoekers die veranderen. ?Het is altijd een tango met de omstandigheden.? Maarten Inghels (1988) is schrijver. Fernand Khnopff (1858) était un artiste belge aux talents multiples et maîtrisant parfaitement diverses techniques artistiques. Mais contrairement à son contemporain et collègue James Ensor, ce n'était pas un graveur né. Il estimait toutefois l'art de la gravure à sa juste valeur.
