Jacob Samuel Zuri-Szezak (18841943) , lawyer, authority on Hebrew law, and author. Zuri, who was born in Poland, studied in France and Germany. After immigrating to Palestine after World War I, he lectured for a time at the Jerusalem Law School. In 1927 he moved to Paris and in 1931 to London. Zuri's single scholarly purpose was to introduce into the European study of Greek, Roman, and Islamic law the data of the Jewish legal tradition. He published most of his 31 works in Hebrew, because, as a Zionist, he hoped to lay the foundation for a system of legislation for the coming Jewish state. In his biographical studies and in his analysis of Jewish jurisprudence, Zuri distinguishes between two main currents in rabbinical methodology, the southern, characteristic of Judean scholars, and the northern, of Galilean scholars. These recur in Babylonian Sura and Nehardea-Pumbedita, respectively. Southern methodology seeks for the underlying unity of surface differences. In mishnaic study, a southerner will relate the view of an anonymous Mishnah to the total view held by a tannaitic authority or to an abstract legal principle. Northern methodology concentrates on concrete characteristics of cases and looks for fine individual differences. In mishnaic controversy, the northerner looks for an explanation of difference in the differing circumstances of specific cases. Zuri worked out these principles in, among others, the following works: Rab, sein Leben und seine Anschauungen (1918) ; Rabbi Akiva (Heb. , 1924) ; Rav Ashi (Heb. 1924) ; Tarbut ha-Deromim (1924) ; Toledot Darkhei ha-Limmud (1914) ; Toledot ha-Mishpat ha-Zibburi ha-Ivri (3 vols. 193134) ; and Tarbut ha-Deromim (1924) . Zuri made a substantial contribution to the study of talmudic history and law. Inscribed on title page. 1st edition. Later boards. 8vo. 40, 34 pages. 18 cm. In Hebrew and German. Title translates to Melodies of Israel after the Destruction. Frankl ( 1810-1894) was a famous Austrian-Jewish poet. He took part in the revolution of 1848, and his poems on liberty had considerable vogue. His lyrics are among his best work. He was secretary of the Jewish community in Vienna, and did a lasting service to education by his visit to the Orient in 1856. He founded the first modern Jewish school (the Von Lämmel Schule) in Jerusalem. His brilliant volumes Nach Jerusalem describing his eastern tour have been translated into English, as is the case with many of his poems. Samuel ben Nathan Ha-Levi Loeb (Kolin) (17201806) was a German rabbi and posek. His most famoous work, Mahazit ha-Shekel is a commentary on the Shulhan Arukh, Orah Hayyim, and Yoreh De'ah. "The section on Ora? ?ayyim (Vienna, 180708) is in fact a supercommentary on the Magen Avraham of A.A. *Gombiner. Its main purpose is to give the actual wording of the sources to which Gombiner alludes, or which he abbreviates, and to simplify his rather difficult language. Only portions of the commentary to the Yoreh De'ah, part 1, and on the laws of niddah were published (185860). Title translates to Ben Avuyah: A Poem about the Merits of Life. Meir Letteris (1800-1871) was an Austrian Jewish scholar and the foremost poet of the Galician Haskala. He published a working translation of Goethes Faust using the character of Elisha ben Abuyah instead. Ben Abuyah was a controversial rabbi and religious authority from the period immediately following the destruction of the Second Temple. His views were considered heretical by the other Tannaim, leading to Talmud references to him falling under the name "The Other One. (Wikipedia, 2018) .
