John Hely Owen, Commander, Royal Navy
War At Sea Under Queen Anne a presentation copy inscribed and dated by the author to Winston S. Churchill in 1938 whom the author served as naval research assistant for nearly a decade whose work paralleled Churchill's own history of the first Duke of Marlborough and who served in the Royal Navy under Churchill's First and Second World War tenures as First Lord of the Admiralty
London: Cambridge University Press 1938. First edition. Hardcover. This first edition is the author’s inscribed presentation copy to Winston S. Churchill. The work is the author’s study of naval warfare between Britain and France in the early eighteenth century during the reign of Queen Anne. It was written concurrent to the author’s work as a naval history research consultant to Churchill regarding the same period and is inscribed on the front free endpaper in black ink in five lines: “The Right. Hon: W. S. Churchill from J. H. Owen 28 April 1938”.

Condition is very good. The blue cloth binding is square tight and sharp-cornered with light scuffing mild spine toning and minor wrinkling to the spine head. The contents retain a crisp feel with quite light spotting primarily confined to the prelims and page edges. The endpapers show transfer browning from the pastedown and mild age-toning to the text block edges.

Commander John Hely Owen RN 1890-1970 served in the Royal Navy during Churchill’s tenure as First Lord of the Admiralty. Owen became a Lieutenant in 1912 and served as a submariner during the later years of the First World War. He rose to Lieutenant-Commander in 1920 while Churchill was Secretary of State for War and Air. Owen was with the Naval Intelligence Department in 1931 when Churchill first engaged him for research assistance and retired as a Commander in 1934 only to rejoin the Naval Intelligence Division in 1939 the year the Second World War began and Churchill returned to the Admiralty. In addition to authoring this book Owen was co-editor of four volumes of the Navy Records Society. Owen’s papers are held by the University of Cambridge including letters from Churchill to Owen while Owen was working as Churchill’s naval historical adviser – and working on this his own book.

The gift of this book to Churchill was more than apropos. Firstly in April 1938 Churchill was just a few months away from publication of his fourth and final mammoth volume of the history of his great ancestor John Churchill who had become Captain-General and first Duke of Marlborough fighting for Queen Anne. Owen had been assisting Churchill with Marlborough in “naval aspects of the work” since the summer of 1931. Owen was among the small group of advisors explicitly credited; In the “August 13 1938” Preface to the final volume Churchill wrote “I have been greatly assisted in the necessary researches… again by… Commander J. H. Owen R.N.”

Churchill the former cavalry officer would play a pivotal role in Britain’s Navy in both of the twentieth century’s world wars – and the Admiralty would play a pivotal role in both imperiling and reviving Churchill’s political fortunes.

In October 1911 aged 36 Winston Churchill was appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. He entered the post with the brief to change war strategy and ensure the readiness of the world’s most powerful navy. He did both. Even Secretary of State for War Lord Kitchener with whom Churchill had been variously at odds for nearly two decades told Churchill on his final day as First Lord “Well there is one thing at any rate they cannot take from you. The Fleet was ready." The World Crisis: 1915 p.391 Nonetheless when Churchill advocated successfully for a naval campaign in the Dardanelles that ultimately proved disastrous he was scapegoated and forced to resign leaving the Admiralty in May 1915.

Churchill spent part of his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches at the Front. Before war's end Churchill was exonerated by the Dardanelles Commission and rejoined the Government but the stigma of the Dardanelles lingered.

Churchill spent most of the 1930s out of power and out of favor warning against the growing Nazi threat and often at odds with both his Party leadership and prevailing public sentiment. As the Second World War approached Churchill passed into his sixties with his own future as uncertain as that of his nation. In 1938 when Owen inscribed this book to him and he was finishing his final volume of Marlborough Churchill may have wondered if the life history he was writing would eclipse his own.

Of course it did not. On 3 September 1939 Britain declared war on Germany formally entering what would become the twentieth century’s defining conflict not just for Britain but for the world. That same day Churchill was re-appointed First Lord of the Admiralty – nearly a quarter of a century after he had been forced out. Eight months later he became Britain’s wartime prime minister.

References: Churchill Marlborough: Vol. IV; The University of Cambridge; Gilbert Vol. V

Cambridge University Press hardcover

JOHN RING, ROYAL MARINE
1914 - 1918 WW1 ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN JOURNAL OF A ROYAL MARINE STATIONED AND PATROLLING IN THE MIDDLE EAST AND EAST INDIES CONTAINING BOTH DETAILED AND FASCINATING DIARY ENTRIES OF AND COMPREHENSIVE LISTS OF NAVAL FACTS AND FIGURES
HMS FOX HMS PROSERPINE RED SEA INDIA EAST INDIES. Good. 1914. On offer is a detailed and eclectic book made by John Ring a Royal Marine Number 1520 during World War 1 on the H.M.S. Fox and H.M.S. Proserpine. The book contains journal entries of Rings time on the H.M.S. Fox in active duty and experiencing naval warfare. His entries are presented in a fairly matter-of-fact way with few sentence breaks. For example: H.M.S. Fox 9th June 1915. Join H.M.S. Fox at Ismailia on the 9th and stayed at at Ismailia from June 9th until the 1st of August and went from thier to the Great Bitter Lake and remained their until August 20th and then sailed for Suez and arrived in Suez on Aug 22nd and stayed their until Aug 31st and then left Suez for the Great Bitter Lake and remained their for a week and while we were their we captured two Turkish mines and kept them on board our ship for a night or two and about two mornings afterwards Sept 4 we towed them 4 Hundread miles from the Ship and about one hour after The Signal was made from our ship to press the Button and about two days later we found another Turkish mines and also did the same to that. For the rest of 1915 Ring is one the Fox as it patrols the area Suez Canal area from the canal to Port Said. From the Fox Ring moves to the H.M.S. Proserpine. On the Proserpine Ring does much of the same as he did on the Fox patrolling the Suez Canal rescuing ships that have run aground and occasionally coming into combat: The natives fired back to us and in their firing about the fourth round it was reported that the gunner was blown over and killed and another man had his arm blown off. The ship stays on the Shatt-al-Arab River for 4 months than leaves for India first docking at Bombay and then moving on to Colombo. While we were at Colombo we went to the Royal Naval Camp at Diyatalawa Ceylon and their are some interesting places to go at Ceylon about 200 years from the camp were were at was the Camp while the Boer War was on they sent the prisoners to Ceylon and another place was Little England. After this last diary entry the book takes on a less narrative identity. The rest of the journal consists of page after page of incredibly interesting and comprehensive lists of things concerning military casualties and other matters. The lists contain headings such as Norwegian Ships Sunk Enemys Lost Airships British Steamers Torpedoed and Sunk British Ships Sunk by German Raiders Soldiers Deaths in Quelling Rebellion concerning the 1916 Irish Rebellion commonly referred to as Easter Rising These are Marine Officers lost in the Battle he does not write it but he is referring to the Battle of Heligoland Bight the first naval battle of WW1 H.M.S. Ships Lost and Sunk in the Great War and many other lists of naval ships lost in the war usually containing the name of the ship the size in tonnage the date commissioned and/or destroyed and occasionally the crew size type of guns used and/or the name of the Captain. There are long lists of ships sunk from almost all the Allied Power countries. There are also news stories about the hanging of Sir Roger Casement the sinking of the Dreadnought Leonardo Da Vinci the H.M.S. King George VII and other stories related to the war copied down probably word for word from a newspaper. Though Ring was born in Essex the stories of Sir Roger Casement and the entry about the deaths in the Irish rebellion make it seem that Ring might have had some Irish sympathies or was possibly just interested in the Rebellion as a military matter. There are also about two dozen loose pieces of ephemera include with the book dealing with John Rings entire life and career the earliest dated 1896 and the latest 1955. Included are: A Naval Marriage Certificate of John Ring to Margaret Carr from 1920 on board the H.M.S. Hercules; 2 certificates of service detailing Rings entire military career from 1905-1932 with the earlier certificate showing a complete list of the ships Ring served on from 1905 to 1924 both certificates contain much personal information including Date and Location of Birth Religion Next of Kin and physical characteristics; many newspaper clippings concerning WW1 and WW2 with quite a few political cartoons as well. The book is in very good condition without any noticeable signs of wear and tear. For an unknown reason the cover reads O.R. Wace H.M.S. Swiftsure East Indies. Rings service record has no record of him stationed on the Swiftsure. The handwriting is clean and easy to read. It is 84 pages in length.; Manuscript; Folio - over 12" - 15" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF JOHN RING ROYAL MARINE MARINE NUMBER 1520 H.M.S FOX H.M.S.
