Dei centodiciotto membri dell'equipaggio, ventitré sopravvissero dietro la barriera protettiva dei reattori, nella parte posteriore del Kursk, sotto il comando del tenente di vascello Dmitrij Kolesnikov, giovane ufficiale di ventisette anni. Questa è la loro storia, scritta da chi era presente in quei giorni frenetici. In questo libro Robert Moore ha denunciato le responsabilità di questa disgrazia: la sua penna ci consegna un pezzo di storia rimasto sommerso, e ci svela le numerose falle di un sistema militare imperfetto e gli errori del governo russo. Dal ritardo con cui venne rilevato il disastro al fallimento delle missioni di soccorso, fino alla fatale decisione di non accettare in tempo gli aiuti internazionali, la tragedia del Kursk apre uno squarcio sui meccanismi di gestione del potere della nuova Russia, portando alla luce i numerosi insabbiamenti voluti dal Cremlino: per il giovane Vladimir Putin infatti, eletto da pochi mesi alla presidenza, l'affondamento di questo poderoso sottomarino è stato la prima grave crisi da affrontare, ma anche l'occasione per provarsi nel ridurre al silenzio e all'obbedienza le voci dissidenti e la stampa indipendente del Paese. Nella vicenda del Kursk e delle sue vittime si intrecciano dunque i drammi personali delle famiglie che hanno combattuto per ottenere verità e giustizia, ma anche le storture di un sistema politico e burocratico indifferente. Una tragedia nascosta che riemerge in questa inchiesta, diventata anche un film interpretato da Colin Firth, Léa Seydoux e Matthias Schoenaerts.
