Glasier, Phillip.
As the Falcon Her Bells. London, Heinemann, (1963).
Small 4to. 223 pp., final blank page. With coloured photographic frontispiece and numerous black and white photographic illustrations in the text. Original full cloth with giltstamped spine-title. Printed pastedowns. First edition, rare. "Excellent memoir" (Gallagher) of one of Britain's leading experts on hawking and falconry, Glasier (1915-2000), who spent much of his life involved with the conservation and breeding of raptors and bringing them to public attention through the foundation of the Falconry Centre, Newent, Gloucestershire. - In his autobiography he recalls his early life and his influential uncle, the falconer and photographer Charles Knight, who introduced him to the sport. The photographs show key moments in the author's life, including his first attempts at falconry with his uncle, introducing his own children to hawking later on, activities of the Hawking Club, and the training of an eagle in the Scottish winter, as well as impressive photographs showing birds in mid-flight or landing. Includes observations on his encounter with the American actor Robert Taylor (1911-69) on the set of the 1953 British-American historical film "Knights of the Round Table", where he was responsible for the flying of falcons. - Autograph inscription to "dear Uncle Charles" by Tara, dated "Christmas 1963". Lower boards slightly stained; occasional light foxing. A good copy of this intriguing account never seen at auction. Gallagher, Falcon Fever 324. OCLC 561197538.

Goeje, M[ichael] J[an] de.
Mémoire sur les Carmathes du Bahrain et les Fatimides. Leiden, E. J. Brill, 1886.
8vo. 1 bl. f., (6), 232 pp. Original front printed wrapper cover bound within contemporary red half morocco with marbled boards and giltstamped spine. Marbled endpapers. Mémoires d'Histoire et de Géographie Orientales, No. 1, second edition (first published in 1862). Standard work on a mediaeval Shi'a Ismaili group, the Qarmatians of Bahrain, which at this period included much of eastern Arabia as well as the islands that comprise the present state. For much of the 10th century the Qarmatians were the most powerful force in the Persian Gulf and Middle East, controlling the coast of Oman and collecting tribute from the caliph in Baghdad. They instigated what has been termed a "century of terrorism" in Kufa: they considered the pilgrimage to Mecca a superstition and, once in control of the Bahraini state, they launched raids along the pilgrim routes crossing Arabia. In 906 they ambushed the pilgrim caravan returning from Mecca and massacred 20,000 pilgrims. The Qarmatians came close to raiding Baghdad in 927 and sacked Mecca and Medina in 930. The assault on Islam's holiest sites saw the Qarmatians desecrate the Well of Zamzam with corpses of Hajj pilgrims and take the Black Stone from Mecca to Al-Hasa. - The Dutch Arabist and Orientalist de Goeje (1836-1909) taught at the University of Leiden. He was editor of the "Encyclopaedia of Islam" and collated the Bodleian manuscripts of al-Idrisi. - A few contemporary pencil notes in the margins. With an appendix containing relevant Arabic texts. Minor rubbing to binding, but altogether a fine copy of this rare work; no copy in auction records. Macro, Bibliography of the Arabian Peninsula, 1052. OCLC 4738568. Cf. Fück 211 (for Goeje).

Goetz, F[rançois] J[oseph].
Par brevet d’invention. Gant hygiènique du cheval ou brosse arabe dite Kaffah propre à polir le poil. Paris, (imprimerie de Sètier), lith. de G. Frey, [1829?].
8vo. Lithogr. title-page, 29, (1) pp., 1 blank fol. With 2 small illustrations on a lithogr. plate. Original grey lithogr. wrappers. First illustrated edition, previously published twice in Paris in 1828 as "Brosse hygiènique du Cheval" (with different page counts and without a plate). The present edition could be traced exclusively at the Biblioteca dell'Accademia delle scienze, Turin; the copy in the Bibliothèque nationale de France appears to be a variant preserving the original title. In 1830 Baumgärtner in Leipzig published a somewhat more widely received German translation: "Der königl. privilegirte Gesundheits-Handschuh für die Behandlung des Pferdes. Oder arabische Bürste, genannt Kaffah, die Haut des Pferdes zu glätten" (31 pp., without a plate). A review, published in Prague in 1834, describes the author's patent: "This 'Kaffah' is a fabric of horsehair, in the shape of a long mitten into which the hand is stuck so as to groom, rub down, clean, and smoothen the horse without any danger of injury, so common in the use of a currycomb". This grooming mitt - "qafaz" in Arabic - supposedly was in wide use in the Middle East and offered numerous advantages in the army and cavalry, being exceedingly economical. - Untrimmed; occasional insignificant waterstains to the wide margins, otherwise very clean. The plate shows the "kaffah" rolled out for use and folded for travel. Very rare. Menessier de la Lance I, 560. ICCU TO0\1167471. Cf. Huth 113 (German edition only). OCLC 457984303.
