In the preceding volumes of this work, our archaeological discoveries in the mound called Beycesultan have been dealt with in chronological order from the earliest remains upwards. Volume I was concerned almost exclusively with the finds made in the deep sounding on the inner flank of the western hill, which penetrated the Early Bronze Age and Chalcolithic settlements, while Volume II covered the greatly extended occupation of the entire site in the Middle Bronze Age. Since it now remains for us to describe the more modest, but perhaps equally interesting installations of the Late Bronze Age, it will be understood... The earliest buildings of this settlement, dating from the Late Bronze Age appear in our plan ofLevel III(Fig. 2). It will be seen that only a limited area, measuring approximately 30 m. square, was exposed, but it proves sufficient to illustrate the still rather impoverished character of the place at this period. The actual summit of the hill at this time must have been located a little to the west of the area excavated; so that the two parallel streets, each about 3 m. wide, sloped upwards at an inclination of about 1:40 from approaches on the eastern... Reference to the Late Bronze Age buildings in Area R, on the northern periphery of the western hill, has been postponed until now because, in our own opinion, they have no resemblance to or connection with the ordinary domestic dwellings exposed elsewhere. This, however, depends on an argument regarding their purpose, which cannot be discussed usefully until they have been described properly. The reader should, at the same time, immediately be reminded that it was the continued excavation of this area, after the Late Bronze Age buildings had been removed, which led to the discovery in the Middle Bronze levels...

The classical period of Ottoman court carpets, the production of which have continued throughout the six hundred year history of the Ottoman Empire, starts with the XVIth century. During the XVIIth and the XVIIIth centuries important carpet weaving centers in Anatolia come to prominence, whereas in the XIXth a new period of palace carpet weaving opens up with the establishment of the Istanbul Feshane and Izmit Hereke carpet weaving factories. By the end of the XIXth century, very precious carpets that continued the imperial tradition were woven in the workshops in Kumkapi district of Istanbul. Today, except for those who remain in museum collections, the number of specimens from the Feshane and Kumkapi carpets are very limited. Therefore scientific studies on these carpets remain limited as well. The Feshane-i Hümayun (The Imperial Fez Factory), founded in 1834 during the reign of Sultan Mahmud II to provide for the army's needs for fabric and fezzes, also produced carpets for the court and royal residences. The Feshane carpets, the likes of which are impossible to manufacture today, were either produced for the exclusive use of the members of the court or for the sultan to send as gifts to foreign rulers, and can be found within a limited number of collections worldwide. In the same period, Hereke Fabrika-i Hümayunu (Hereke Imperial Factory) was founded for the production of silk and cotton fabric, and carpets of a very fine quality were woven in this factory for the furnishing of the palaces. The carpet weaving of Hereke is still prominent in the world today with a new understanding of design and technique as a symbol of quality and splendour. With the second half of the XIXth century, Sivas also came into prominence as a silk carpet weaving center. Carpet weaving masters were brought from Sivas and its provinces and were trained in Kumkapi in order to meet the carpet demand for the palaces.

Archaeology is a learning process. The recent systematic archaeological excavations in Anatolia started transforming the history of the land we a re living in from myth to reality. Protohistory, contrary to popular belief, is not a general historical concept vvith a clear start and a clear ending. Which means Protohistory did not started and ended in a specific period. Neolithic , Chalcolithic and Early Bronze Age a re the Protohistory of the Hittites; just as the Early Iron Age is the Protohistory of the Phrygians and Urartians. On the other hand, the Eastern Anatolian Plateau, vvhich lost it's literary tradition after the Urartians, lived through it's second Protohistorical Period in the Late Iron Age (600 - 200 BC). ¿n this book the author is revaluating the Second Protohistorical Period of the Eastern Anatolian Plateau in the light of present and contemporary archaeological evidence and historical sources; pointing out vvith proof that in order to find the roots in Eastern Anatolia one should look to the West.
