The idea that constitutional government not only would solve political problems, but would alsa be a magical spur to economic prosperity, was not an unusual one for this period. Same of the New Ottomans espoused it. At almost exactly the same time as Halil Serif wrote his memorandum, Mustafa Fazil Pasa published his famous Letter Addressed to Sultan Abdülaziz; this letter also proposed a constitution, as a solution t o the Ottoman Empire's domestic economic, social, and political problems. A constitution, said Mustafa Fazil, would bring liberty, resare individual initiative, aid in cultural development and improve the economy". The political system of France, England, and Belgium and the economic development of those same countries impressed a nll.Ilfber of Ottomans. Trimming of the leaves slightly affects the glosses with no effect to legibility otherwise the margins are wide. Title page crinkled at the upper right corner with a small tear that only affects the margin. Narrow inkblot to the lower margin throughout. B4 with two light brown stains C1 crinkled at lower corner. Bookplates on the inner front panel G. J. Arvanitidi; Antoine Mouradian. Overall in very good condition. First edition. Gilt title vignette on spine damaged. 20 p. <p><br /> A bibliographically unrecorded early sixteenth-century French book about royal ordinances regarding the commonwealth along with the French translation of Sultan Selim I’s letter of conquest fethname addressed to the Grand Master of Rhodes. <br /> <p><p><br /> The first and major part of the book presents nine concepts of orders of Francis I 1494–1547 King of France from 1515 until his death regarding the commonwealth chose publique. The drafts concern such topics as the commerce of spices and drugs wool cloth and other goods chapter 1–4 the weights and equivalents of coins and the recognized foreign currencies chapter 5 the recognized units of measures chapter 6 the regulation of the extravagance of clothing chapter 7 the inn trade chapter 8 and the money that goes to Rome for obtaining Bulls chapter 9. <br /> <p><p><br /> The second section comprises the responses to the aforementioned concepts of the representatives of the Good Cities Bonnes Villes Provence and Dauphiné who had been previously assembled in Paris by the order of the King in March 1516. In most cases they requested a delay of reply to discuss the matters with those who they were representing.<br /> <p><p><br /> The third section presents the grievances and requests delivered to the King by the delegates regarding the provincial councils conciles provinciaux the prolixity of the trials the tariffs the public officers the superior courts cours souveraines the land taxes tailles and the abuse and plunder by the soldiers crossing the kingdom. <br /> <p><p><br /> These sections were recorded and written down by the court clerk Jean Hesselin Seigneur of Girodon. Hesselin mentions himself twice p. 14 and 17 once by name p. 14 within the text.<br /> <p><p><br /> The final part is the French translation of the Ottoman Sultan Selim I’s fethname letter of conquest sent on 27 August 1516 from Aleppo to Fabrizio del Carretto 1455–1521 Grand Master Magnus Magister of the Knights Hospitaller in Rhodes between 1513 and 1521. The fethname accordingly to its genre details Selim’s expedition and the conquest and emphasizes the power and grandeur of the Sultan and his army. <br /> <p><p><br /> Selim I 1470–1520 ascended the throne as the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire in 1512. He is remembered for the enormous expansion of the Empire during his reign thus raise the Ottomans to the leaders of the Muslim world. Selim’s most notable deed was the conquer of the Mamluk Sultanate which included Levant Hejaz and Egypt in 1516 and 1517 at the Battles of Marj Dabiq and Ridaniya.<br /> <p><p><br /> The Battle of Marj Dabiq near Aleppo took place on August 24 1516 where Selim defeated the Mamluk Sultan Al-Ashraf Qansuh al-Ghuri. This was a decisive victory of the war between the Ottoman Empire and the Mamluk Sultanate which ended in the conquest of much of the Middle East. Such an expansion of the Ottoman territory was a clear threat to Rhodes which was the nearest Christian possession to the coast of Asia halfway between Constantinople and Egypt. At the time the Grand Master in Rhodes was the Italian admiral Fabrizio del Carretto 1455–1521; Grand Master from 1513 to 1521 for a short interlude of a course of fifty-five years of Frenchmen serving as the supreme heads of the Order. Selim announced his victory and forecasted his threat to del Carretto in a fethname presented here in French translation however eventually he did not have the time to conduct the campaign against Rhodes. It was his successor Suleiman I who conquered the island in 1522 thus gained control over the eastern Mediterranean for the next centuries. By the time of the siege the commander of the Order was again a Frenchman Grand Master Philippe Villiers de L’Isle-Adam 1464–1534. Suleiman allowed him and the surviving knights to leave unmolested and eventually the Hospitallers were quartered permanently on Malta in 1530.<br /> <p><p><br /> To the best of our knowledge the original fethname has not survived and we could not trance any other printed version or edition of the French translation. Contenant 22 Fables de Mola Dschami Beharistan, des petits contes moraux et de courtes biographies de poètes. Petit in-4, 31 x 22 cm., comprenant 13 ff. non numérotés portant faux-titre, titre, dédicace à l'Impératrice et préface, suivis de 87 pp. Orné d'un frontispice, d'un titre et d'un en-tête gravés par Schmutzer d'après Vincenzo Fanti, d'une gravure dans le texte, de bandeaux, d'une lettrine et de deux culs-de-lampe. Le frontispice, très diplomatique, représente une allégorie de la vertu avec en arrière-plan la basilique Sainte-Sophie, soulignant la relation turco-autrichienne, malgré lintérêt évident de luvre pour la Perse. Reliure demi-basane havane, dos lisse orné de fleurettes dorées, pièce de titre bordeaux, plats recouverts de papier vergé ciré imitation pleine peau brune mouchetée. Reliure un peu usagée, sans manques, charnières craquelées, une pliure en coin inférieur du premier plat. Des rousseurs à l'intérieur, fond de texte bruni sur certaines pages, l'encre ayant tendance à traverser le papier. Bel exemplaire malgré les défauts signalés, imprimé à grandes marges, non ébarbé. Cet ouvrage de l'Académie impériale et royale des Langues orientales de Vienne, fut publié anonymement mais probablement par le plus brillant élève de cette école, Ignaz von Stürmer. Il semble que cette publication soit la première à offrir une chrestomathie spécialement dédiée à la littérature persane. C'est de plus la première utilisation des caractères d'imprimerie de l'alphabet persan. Louvrage a été imprimé dans l'atelier de typographie orientaliste de Joseph von Kurzböck. Il s'inspira des caractères créés par l'orientaliste Meninski cent ans auparavant, pour la publication de son "Thesaurus linguarum orientalium", un "dictionnaire" multilingue turc-arabe-persan paru en 1680. Joseph von Kurzböck retravailla ces caractères, les modifia et les porta au nombre de 520. L'auteur de cette anthologie, Ignaz von Stürmer, travaillait dans le même temps à la nouvelle édition du "Dictionnaire" de Meninski, à paraitre en 1780 en utilisant cette nouvelle technique d'imprimerie. La publication de cette anthologie, véritable expérimentation menée à la fois par son typographe et par son auteur, en fait un ouvrage de toute première importance tant dans sa forme que dans son propos.

Very Good Arabic Original chromo-lithograph map in brown tones. On a special paper with an ongoing blindstamped "Regestre Robur" during the borders. Folded. 70x100 cm. In Arabic. Scale: 1 /1.000.000. Chipped on margins, split on folded traces. Slight discoloration and one stain on lower margin. Otherwise a good copy. An attractive and detailed map of Syria shows the capital (as Aleppo n that map), other cities like Damascus, Raqqa, Homs, Latakia, Ayn al-Arab, Idlib, Hama, Deir Ez-Zor, Jarabulus, et alli. And it shows Turkey on the north (as Turkey containing Hatay and Alexandrette), The Mediterranean shores of the land as well as Lebanon and Palestine (and Jerusalem) on the west, Sharq al-Urdun (Jordan) and Iraq on the south and east. It's very detailed on showing the roads spread throughout the land like railways and ancient roads from the Roman period. Additionally this roads can be followed to the other Arabic countries and regions on the map. This map was calligraphed by Kamel Al-Baba, (1905-1991), who was a Lebanese contemporary / modern calligrapher. He is the son of famous calligrapher Mokhtar Al-Baba. On a special paper with 'ahar'. Sealed. 1 p. Has six lines. With a legible script and fine calligraphic style. It starts with 'huve'. He was a Turkish statesman governor and member of state council according to Sicill-i Osmânî by Süreya and Türkischer Biographischer Index. The House of Giray Crimean Tatar: Geraylar Turkish: Âl-i Cengiz also Girays were the Genghisid/Turkic dynasty that reigned in the Khanate of Crimea from its formation in 1427 until its downfall in 1783. The dynasty also supplied several khans of Kazan and Astrakhan between 1521 and 1550. Apart from the royal Girays there was also a lateral branch the Choban Girays Çoban Geraylar. Before reaching the age of majority young Girays were brought up in one of the Circassian tribes where they were instructed in the arts of war. The Giray khans were elected by other Crimean Tatar dynasts called myrzas mirzalar. They also elected an heir apparent called the qalgha sultan qalga sultan. In later centuries the Ottoman Sultan obtained the right of installing and deposing the khans at his will. Turkey; Viquesnel Two Autograph Letters Signed "Augte Viquesnel" to an unnamed correspondent. In French En Francais
Paris 7 June 1847 and Seaux 14 August 1854. One page each 8vo minor stains and creasing good condition. 1847 He describes a colleague a "M. de La Roquette" for some years Secretary to the "Societe de geographie". whom he understands to be working on Turkey. "Je me de lui indiquer un ouvrage Special sur Constantinople son historie ses monuments . . . " He wishes to avail himself of his correspondent's knowledge of "bibliographie" to help his colleague. 1854 He has left with his correspondent's concierge two books loaned by the latter a copy of the map which accompanies his book "Voyage dans la Turquie d'Europe" and a letter from "M. Elie de Beamont "qui fera bonne figure dans votre collection d'autographes". He gives his response to the books which were lent to him. Note from BnF: "Géologueses travaux embrassent également la météorologie la géographie l'ethnographie. Membre 1833 trésorier 1843 et enfin président 1858 de la Société Géologique de France. Fondateur de la Société de météorologie de France 1850 membre de la Société Philomathique.
