A monument in Lycia: The church of Saint Nicholas in Myra.= Likya'da bir anit: Myra'nin Aziz Nikolaos kilisesi.
New English Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 15 cm). In English and Turkish. 172 p., color and b/w ills. A monument in Lycia: The church of Saint Nicholas in Myra.= Likya'da bir anit: Myra'nin Aziz Nikolaos kilisesi. Today, the church associated with St. Nicholas, namely the Church of St. Nicholas, is located in the ancient city of Myra, within the district of modern Demre. Resulting from the alluvium carried by the rivers, the structure remains 7.5-9 meters below ground level today. It is through these alluvial deposits that the structure had been preserved to a large extent. The Church of St. Nicholas was a prominent building in the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Period. The Church of St. Nicholas is a basilica type structure. The Outer Narthex of the church was reorganized during the 1862 renovation while the Inner Narthex rising above the older foundations of the structure, survived to our day. The oldest wall paintings in the church, which date to the 11th century AD, are painted on the vaults of the Inner Narthex. Arranged into six scenes, these wall paintings depict the bishops and emperors in council (there are two different painting levels in the area south of the middle vault). Prophet figures are depicted on the arches separating the vaults of the Inner Narthex.Inside the dome of the northeastern section of the church, we find the Communion Scene, in which Christ is offering the Apostles bread (rightward) and wine (leftward). This scene, which is dated to the 11th-12th centuries AD, reflects the stylistic characteristics of the capital Constantinople. The wall paintings on the South Burial Chamber have become clearer and more comprehensible after restoration. The wall paintings inside the burial niches on the northern wall of this section have been restored. Among these, there are 5 feast scenes, 15 scenes from the life story of St. Nicholas depicted on the arches of the niches and 45 figures of saints, bishops, martyrs and monks. During the restorations works, new geometric and vegetal motifs have also been discovered.

ERDAL YAZICI.
Aphrodisias and surrounding areas.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Foolscap 8vo. (19 x 12 cm). In English. 180 p., color ills. The city of Aphrodisias, praised outside Anatolia - in the Mediterranean basin - with artefacts produced by sculptors in Antiquity, hasbeen brought to light by systematic excavations since 1961. The city has become more popular as the sculptures adorning the streets and buildings of thousands of years ago are unearthed.Today's world travellers are once again faced with the ancient residents of Aphrodisias, thanks to the dedicated efforts of scientists. True-life experiences of thousands of years have become more understandable as the inscriptions that they carried into the future are read and interpreted. The letters of the emperors, the verses engraved on stones which shed light on the city's social, cultural and economic life, and the graffitis drawn on the rows of the stadium and the theatre are such as to speak the past pages of history. Aphrodisias, which used to hold the ear of emperors at one ime, still astonishes and fascinates visitors today. The interest in and commitment to Aphrodisias of the Emperor Octavian is known through the letter he wrote to Stephanus, the governor of Laodicea:". "This one city I have taken for my own out of all Asia. I wish these people to be protectedas my own townsmen." This book prepared for travellers whose want to discover and face to history of Aphrodisias.

Beginning with the earliest phases of history, human effect on these lands has continued to the present times. In fact, one of the seven monuments in the whole world which written itself as "wonder" is found on these lands. Undoubtedly, it is not a coincidence. ERDAL YAZICI.
On the Lycian way.
New English Paperback. Pbo. Mint. Demy 8vo. (22 x 14 cm). In English. 466 p. Color ills. The lands on which the Lycians lived benefited greatly from the lush Mediterranean climate. The Lycian settlements, stretching along the coast from the west of Antalya to Telmessus, and northwards to the land between the Taurus Mountains and Elmali, are unique in terms of location. The first sights of the cities are the sarcophagi and the house-like rock-cut tombs. These tombs were built to resemble houses in the hope and belief that life would continue within the monumental structures, which still stand to this day. Both the sarcophagi and the rock-cut tombs reflect all the details of craftsmanship of their wooden houses. The Lycians wrote notes on these monuments in order to protect the traces of life. They left curses threatening raiders with verses of heavy punishments, lions and Medusa heads. They proved their craft skills in the large monumental tombs (Heroons). The carvings on the Xanthos Nereid monument, the Pericles Heroon in Lymra and the Trysa Heroon are unique works, both as art and for the mythological stories they tell. It is possible to also see Persian and Greek influences on the carvings. Many tablets remain describing their lives in the cities they constructed. Even though their language has not yet been fully deciphered, the multi lingual writings give hints about the daily lives of the Lycians. The stories on the monumental tombs are just like pages of history talking about those days. It is possible to feel the hope, joy, pain, inevitability, resistance, sovereignty and defeat contained in the inscriptions. When we hit the road for our documentary on the Lycians we started to follow visible and hidden traces of the Lycians between the Mediterranean Sea and the Taurus Mountains. We have tried to reflect what we saw and experienced in addition to the discoveries and researches of travellers of the 18th century and after. Besides our long trips on the Lycian Way we discovered many more hidden Lycian settlements at the peaks of the Taurus Mountains, as well as along the coast from Telmessus (Makri in Greek) to Antalya (Attalia in Greek). We attained the tops of cities after tiring hikes. We experienced great pride in the magnificent monuments. We hummed world melodies in the ancient theatres. We saw the new faces of the cities, re-erected after scientific excavations. They were not the settlements of thirty years ago. We looked for traces of the Lycians on streets and roads that were brought to light hundreds of years later. Then we observed their relics in Turkish Museums such as Antalya Museum, Telmessus Museum, Elmali Museum, Burdur Museum and Istanbul Archaeology Museums, as well as internationally in the British Museum and the Vienna Art and History Museum (Kunsthistoriches Museum). In this documentary book we discuss 8 museums displaying Lycian finds, as well as the 88 ancient cities, villages, mounds and tumuli.

The other side of city walls: Zeytinburnu. Edited by Burçak Evren. [English Edition].
New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 22 cm). In English. 276 p., color and b/w ills. "Zeytinburnu: A quarter monography: A common but wrong belief about the Zeytinburnu District is that the settlement in this area has begun with the slum formation and has had a past of about thirty of forty years. However, the studies carried out show that the settlement in the area has a very old past. This area was very important militarily and religiously the Byzantine Istanbul, known as the 'Second Romeî'. Among the historical structures taken over in this period by our district that was on the passage way of the Byzantine Army were Yedikule Fort to which Sultan Mehmed II Conqueror made some editions and Baliklama Ayazma (Holy Spring) and Church. Balikli Spring first became the subject of an epic on the Byzantine enthronement Of Leon I and became known with its modern name owing to an epic that is rumored to have been created during the conquest of Istanbul (Constantinople). Also, we can wholeheartedly say that our Zeytinburnu District has a rare wealth in terms of Islamic mysticism. Dervish Lodges within the boundaries of our district such as Perisan Baba, Hadji Mahmud Aga, Seyyid Nizam and Merkez Effendi Dervish lodges, as well as Yenikapi Mevlevi House, mentioned as a music academy, have been occasion for the education of extremely important figures of our mystic history.".
